The disturbing content referred to is actually about a teenager; I tend to think that if a teenager can survive the actual experience, a teenager can survive (and would likely benefit from) reading about it. Removing any troubling content from the book would lead to an inaccurate and "sanitized" rather than true portrait of the author's experience and the experiences of the women she encountered in her work, which would be a loss for the reader. I've been recommending it as an absolute must see to women (and sometimes men) for years. I did miss Jennie when she left but it was just as delightful to have her narrate the entire series. Someone just wrote a piece on the show titled The Quiet Genius of Call the Midwife and that finally prompted me to look for the book. Its sad because I've been working in libraries for almost 7 years now. LoL I should have been looked for it. I think the show is brilliant. It opened my eyes as a woman and I think that some of the content might be useful in Health/Sex Education and Social Studies courses. I love all of the characters and I'm happy that the series is still around.(less)

At that age I find very few things to be objectionable however. I think a 17-18 should know enough about his or her own body/history/humanity to understand and appreciate these stories. I think historical accounts are important for young people. We teach children as young as ten about the Holocaust, I think midwifery, poverty, and prostitution at 17-18 is definitely an appropriate age. (less)

I've read this book while +/- 7 months pregnant and found it interesting and not too disturbing. I actually learned some things about pregnancy and giving birth from it. I was a little bit afraid there would be a lot of horror stories about giving birth in it, but although there were, of course, several sad stories, I could handle them well, seeing also as they take place in a completely different setting from today. The most disturbing part of one story did actually not have anything to do with pregnancy, labour or giving birth (I will not mention what it was as this would be a spoiler).(less)
