In 2002 she won the "Premio Arzobispo San Clemente" Award for her novel Leopard in the Sun. In 2004 she won the "VII Premio Alfaguara de Novella" Prize for Delirium. “الوقو� على طالعك لا يقتضي قراءة الفنجان، لأنه مرسوم على وجهك: شاعرٌ أنت، والشعراء لا يحسنون البلاء في الحروب�.

أنهيتها منذ دقائق، وعلى الرغم من أن هناك موعدا يجب أن أتجهز له وألحق به لقضاء بعض المشاوير المهمة إلا أنني لا أستطيع إرجاء الكتابة عن الرواية!
رواية عجيبة! الواقعية السحرية حيث كل شيء جامح، حيث الوصف مبالغ فيه ولكنه يترك أثرا لا ينمحي!
بعد حادث مقرف وشنيع وبنبوءة غريبة وأمر كان يمكن تلافيه أو ضرب الحائط به يدخل فرعان من عائلة واحدة في ثأر عجيب! لأخذ الثأر شروط ومواعيد!
الكاتبة الكولومبية لاورا ريستريبو لها أسلوب فريد بالفعل، فأولا كان السرد مجنونا ... يوجد شخصان يتحفاننا بتعليقات واستفسارات وتعقيبات عجيبة الهيئة والمضمون، كنت أفاجأ بكلامهما فلا أعلم هل أغتاظ أم أضحك! يفصلانني وهما يعقبان على الرواية وكأنهما مشاهدان في سينما، أو كأننا نجلس معهما على مصطبة بيتهما، ولكنني بالتأكيد سأفتقدهما!
للكاتبة أيضا أسلوب ساخر عجيب، ولوصفها للشخصيات والأحداث والطقوس والاحتفالات سحر لا يخفى، فهي قادرة على جعلك وكأنك ترى الأبطال وتجالسهم
أما أبطالها فالكثير منهم هم درجات من الرمادي، لا خير مطلق ولا شر مطلق، والكثير منهم عالق في الأحداث بفعل النبوءة العجيبة، تجد الواحد منهم يطاوع شيطانه حينا ويقاومه حينا آخر أو مع أشخاص بعينهم
أما فرعا العائلة ففيهم كل أطياف البشر، هناك الهمجي، والمرهف، والمغلوب على أمره، والمتعصب وهؤلاء الواقعون في المنتصف، ولكن الأكيد أن كل منهم يحمل شيئا يدعوك للتعاطف معه أو التقدير، فهذا حساس مرهف وفنان، وذلك يعاني من عقدة الرفض منذ الطفولة والتوق إلى التقدير، أما هذا فلا يقاتل أعزلا، وذاك لا يشرب الخمر ولا السجائر ووفي لزوجته، وهذا أخلص لصديقه، وهكذا تستمر التناقضات البشرية في وصف شخصيات الرواية العجيبة
تعاطفت معهم جميعا للأسف، وعلى الأخص مع ماني وإلينا ومينديس، تقززت من خيالات أركانخل المريضة تجاه خالته الخرساء وتعاطفت مع مقاومته لأفكاره واستغفاره!
تألمت بشكل ما للنهايات المأساوية المستحقة صراحة، وأحببت النهاية بظهور باكان، رمز الخير والمروءة الوحيد في الرواية
كولومبيا وأمريكا اللاتينية عموما! لماذا لم أدرس عن تلك المنطقة أي شيء؟! لم يكلفنا أستاذ واحد فقط طيلة سنوات دراستي للعلوم السياسية بالبحث عن أنظمة تلك البلاد أو تاريخها! لا يصلنا منها إلا الأدب دائم التصوير للعنف والفساد والإنفلات والفقر والمخدرات والجنس أو الدعارة وتواطؤ السلطات مع أصحاب النفوذ!

حروب العصابات والاقتتال بين الإخوة في مزيج واحد، ضمن الأجواء السحرية لأميركا اللاتينية بكل غرائبيتها وغموضها الجذاب.
ممتعة ويليق بها جداً أن تتحول لفيلم سينمائي.

This is a tale of fratricidal Columbian drug gangsters and the women who love them.
Once upon a time the Barragáns and Monsalves were cousins and friends and shared their criminal enterprise. But then Nando Barragán killed Adriano Monsalve in a drunken barroom fight over the widow Bracho, what the French would call cherchez la femme, and the two sides of the family began an almost ritualized series of revenge killings. Prolific breeders, the two sides have plenty of lives to squander.
The first sentence of the linear notes on the jacket cover hints that there will be some West Side Story feel to this and, as if to ratify that, one sequestered couple spend a night on a couch chastely watching that very movie.
This is my third book by Laura Restrepo. I like how she takes chances, not having some template. She uses an interesting writing technique here. Popping up now and again through the story is italicized dialogue. We don’t know who’s speaking to whom but it sounds like some ongoing gossip from the surrounding community. In this way, it advanced the story while not always being entirely reliable. There were times that this seemed designed to explain things without needing to incorporate the action in the main narrative. Like acknowledging that there was sex without having to undergo the inevitable clumsiness of writing it out. That was okay, mostly, except when that technique was used in the big climatic shootout scene.
This is a good story, well told. The author nicely develops character, even in a very crowded book. The lawlessness was startling, as it was meant to be. The lack of governmental authority was just as startling. We never see a cop, and it isn’t until the last twenty pages that Colonel Pinilla shows up with a platoon, eight jeeps, three motorcycles and a tank. The colonel proves, however, to be no more effectual than Officer Krupke.

من يبحث عن عمل أدبي حافل بصور من الواقعية السحرية ، مفعم بالمشاعر الإنسانية ، مليء بالتفاصيل الحية والصور المتنوعة من بيئة من أخصب البيئات التي تنبت فيها الصراعات والجرائم العائلية وتتشعب وتتجذر وتستمر لسنوات ، حتى يقضي الشر على نفسه بنفسه ..
إذن فليقرأ هذه الرواية الجذابة الساحرة ، تفاصيلها ملأتني بالدهشة ، ووجدتني أريد الا أنتهي منها من روعتها ..
وشكرا للمترجم مارك جمال على اختياره للروايات الرائعة وإعادة تقديمها بالشكل الذي لا ينتقص من قيمته الأدبية ولا من روعة صياغتها وجمال أسلوبها وسخاء صورها التعبيرية البديعة

"كالفهد في الشمس"
صراع أسطوري بين عائلتين يتحول إلى أسطورة من فرط روايتها، أو هو أصلاً أسطورة تحولت إلى حقيقة بفعل كثرة روايتها، لا أحد يدري ممن يروي الحكاية كجوقة جماعية تتحدث بلسان الجموع بطريقة فنية رائعة حوّلت ذلك الصراع إلى نوستالجيا وذكرى شاعرية، لأن المرحلة التي تلته اختلف فيها نوع العنف تمامًا وفجرت صراعات كثيرة بلا ضوابط أو قواعد اشتباك.
السرد رائع ومتميز في كل جملة، وذلك دأب أدب كولومبيا الواقعي السحري اللذيذ.

رواية تدور أحداثها بشكل تقليدي عن صراع مافيوزي بين عائلتين صحراويتين، يتزعمهما شابان مليئان عنفاً وسودواية.
ما يعتبر هنا مميز بشكل كامل، هو تناول المؤلفة للشخصيات ببعدها النفسي الذي يحمل كوارث الثأر، فهنا الجميع واقع تحت رزح التقاليد مرغماً عنه، حتى القارئ سيقع في هذه الأوحال أيضاً، لا مجال للتعاطف، لا مجال للانزياحات، الجميع مُلام والجميع مظلوم.
دخول إلى قعر عوالم الصراع البشري بكل بدائيته وعنفه. عنف لا محدود يتنافس الطرفان عليه، يتنافس أولاد العم عليه، في تهميش كامل للدولة وللسلطات وللبشر الذين يتعايشون مرغمين معهم.
رواية كُتبت ليقلب القارئ الصفحات مرغماً وهي ليست بمشوقة. فقصتها لا تمنحك مجالاً لتلتقط أنفاسك، تعدد الأصوات في الرواية منحها جمالية سردية، فهذا التنقل المتناغم بين الراوي والمتحاورين، أكمل بشكل حرفي القطع الناقصة في حبكة الرواية.
طبعا ترجمة مارك جمال أضافت للرواية سحراً لغوياً خاصاً، فبساطة اللغة، وتناسق الكلمات والتعابير، كان متناسباً مع الطابع الواقعي المخلوط سحريا في الرواية، حيث تشكل السحرية الواقعية فيها عنصراً هاماً جدا في البناء.

هذه الرواية مثال سيبقى في ذاكرتي عن قدرة الأسلوب الأدبي اللامحدودة على الخلق و الابتكار فالقصة مهما كانت مكررة و معروفة بل و حتى غير ملفتة، يستطيع الكاتب بأدواته و حسّه الشخصي و نظرته التي لا يتشابه بها مع أحد، على جعلها قصةً مختلفة تماماً و إثرائها بالتفاصيل التي ستصنع تفرّدها .

Cuando suelo pensar que me refugio en los clásicos porque siento que lo contemporáneo no tiene mucho que aportarme, viene Laura Restrepo y me pega dos cachetazos (derecho y revés) cuando ya me había dejado la cara ablandada con “Delirio”� La novela comienza con una muerte: Nando asesina a su primo Adriano en un bar por un lío de polleras. Este asesinato va a desencadenar un ENFRENTAMIENTO a MUERTE entre las dos familias: Los Barragán y los Monsalve, cual Montescos y Capuletos. Dos familias cercanas, que no se dedican a negocios del todo legales, pero para los cuales no hay nada más sagrado que la familia y el HONOR, que tienen sus propias reglas y códigos, por lo que no pueden dejar pasar esta muerte y deciden comenzar una guerra entre ellos, donde se prometen matarse uno a uno ganando quien haya matado a toda la familia opuesta. Con un excelente uso del REALISMO MÁGICO y (en mi opinión) de la PARODIA, por las descripciones de los personajes apuntando siempre al estereotipo de “GÁNSTERS�, Restrepo nos muestra la vida de estas familias, sus peculiares características y hábitos y principalmente esa triste atmósfera de soledad que a pesar de ser tan rivales, acecha a todos por igual. Una narrativa total y completamente SEDUCTORA la de esta mujer, mucho más ágil, corta y fácil de digerir que “Delirio�. Unos personajes por demás interesantes y un FINAL simplemente brillante�

Dos familias en la Guajira se condenan a una saga de venganza que inició cuando Nando Barragán mató a su primo Adriano Monsalve; según el código familiar la sangre se paga con sangre y todo acabará cuando un clan acabe con el otro; en medio de ese odio irracional se desarrollan bellas historias de amor. El estilo de Laura Restrepo me encanta y esta novela además nos refleja un modo de vivir y una guerra que ha sido una constante en la historia de nuestro país.

«Todos para uno y uno para todos en esa pasión de muerte que devora más que celos de recién casada, peor que llama de amor encendida. Ese rencor redondo y completo como el universo; esa rabia madre y padre que se traga todo y se convierte en la existencia misma, por fuera de la cual no hay motivo para vivir ni para morir.»
Descubrir a Laura Restrepo, primero en Delirio y después en este Leopardo al sol, fue como volver a la Colombia de García Márquez, pero ya en otro tiempo, en otras circunstancias, mucho más crudas, crueles y hasta macabras, que dejaban un tanto atrás el tono épico y mágico de las historias de Gabo, moviéndose en otro contexto.
Leopardo al sol fue la segunda novela que conseguí y leí de esta autora, y tal como me sucediera la primera vez, en cuanto comencé la lectura ya no pude despegar mi atención de ella.
Su lenguaje es fluido, ameno, cautivante, maduro, como el de una autora que llevara medio siglo escribiendo, y que por él mismo es capaz de llevarte de la mano sin chistar a donde sea. Y si a eso se le añade la profundidad y tino con que son retratados sus personajes, la historia de una familia de lúmpenes que salieron del árido desierto de la Guajira para conquistar el mundo a punta de pistola, y una trama de amor imposible, tenemos una novela maravillosa.
Esa existencia infernal que no da cabida más que a un continuo y mortal odio entre unos y otros, en donde la muerte, el dolor y la rabia no contenida se respiran en todo momento, y donde no hay absolutamente nada que esperar fuera de la violencia cotidiana y el miedo, y el horror, y la venganza sinfín, llegan a ser tan apabullantes y omnipresentes, que te llega a pesar la desesperanza y el desanhelo de saberte en un mundo verdaderamente injusto, cruel y asesino.
En el mundo de los Barraganes y los Monsalves no existen los días tranquilos, la vida apacible, privada, con sus alegrías, tristezas y comunes y corrientes peripecias; los inquebrantables lazos de parentesco y su sanguinario código jerosolimitano de muertes sinfín lo consume todo y todo lo destruye: los lazos de afecto, los posibles vínculos familiares más allá del deber filial-parental, la confianza, hasta la alegría y el amor mismos desaparecen o son simplemente barridos y dejados de lado con tal de no faltar a ese Honor que impele a ambas familias a siempre odiarse, lastimarse y matarse con un odio más puro que el más grande amor. Viven para odiar y odiando mueren todos.
Aunque también, claro, la desesperación de Alina por vivir algo mejor, la vida sinsentido y vacía de Nando, el dolor y amargado anhelo de la madre Severina de que las cosas pudieran haber sido diferentes, y sobre todo el sueño del Mani, que por amor, intenta mejorar las cosas y alejarse de ese infierno, le dan una nota de enternecedora humanidad a este relato de mafiosos, matones e hideputas, dándonos un respiro, una esperanza de salvación, o cuando menos de mínimo sentido ante tal barbarie sinsentido; algo a lo cual aferrarse.
La esperanza, o mejor dicho el vislumbre de que no todo en la vida tiene que ser sangre sobre sangre y muerte sobre muerte, se asoma a mediados del libro con la zeta sin víctimas, esa tensa e interminable noche en que, sin embargo, y a diferencia de lo que ha venido ocurriendo todas esas noches de venganza desde hace ya quiénsabe cuántos años, nadie muere, no hay venganza ni víctima. La vida llega en verdad a tomar otro cariz, aunque sea sólo por un momento; el cruel y hasta entonces nunca visto asesinato de Narciso Barragán es tan sólo una pequeña muestra de lo que está por venir, el inicio de algo mucho peor a esta guerra «fraterna» y hasta entonces respetada por ambos bandos: la guerra sin cuartel, sin códigos, sin reglas y sin moral alguna, esa realidad apabullante y de violencia monstruosa en la que vive la Colombia de hoy, ese país devastado por el narcotráfico en que los narradores del relato viven y que les hace recordar hasta con cierta nostalgia esa otra época en que Barraganes y Monsalves hacían de las suyas y eran los amos de las calles...
Merece que se la lea.
Por último, debo decir que no entiendo a qué se refieren aquellos comentarios de que ésta es, en realidad, una novela «sobre mujeres», y que la guerra de mafiosos que hay detrás es sólo un escenario de fondo. Si a ésas vamos, igual de cierto resulta el decir que es una «novela de hombres», o una «novela de sicarios», o novela sobre el machismo, del origen del crimen o del mal, y tantas otras cosas más, que pretendiendo tal vez explicar y casi siempre clasificar no hacen más que falsear lo que Leopardo al sol en realidad es: una novela estupenda.

Laura Restrepo es una de mis autoras favoritas desde que "Delirio" ganó el premio Alfaguara en 2004.
"Leopardo al Sol" es el primer libro que leí de esta autora y me llevó a buscar más de sus libros. Es la versión colombiana de los Montesco y Capuletto. Retrato de la violencia y esquemas familiares en Colombia, que nos toca muy de cerca como latinoamericanos, no tan lejanos a esa experiencia.

رواية أشبه بالأفلام القديمة، مصبوغة بطبعة أمريكا اللاتينية، عن أسرة واحدة يتناحر قسمان منهما بسبب مقتل أحدهما على يد الآخر، فينتقل الثأر من الطرفين لأعوام مديدة، ورغم تقليدية الفكرة إلا أن أسلوب السرد وطريقة الكتابة نالا إعجابي وجذبني للعمل حتى نهايته وإن كنت شعرت ببعض التعجل في الصفحات ما قبل الأخيرة

Restrepo me conquistó con Delirio. Así que me propuse leerla más. Leopardo al sol parecía ser su siguiente mayor ambición. Y vaya qué novela.
El asesinato de Adriano por parte de su primo Nando desencadena una trama destinada a ser dura en las intermitencias del desierto. La sangre se paga con sangre. Alimentan su sed de venganza con negocios ilegales, a través del dinero fácil en una nueva sociedad donde ese es el camino. Restrepo se basa en un acontecimiento real, en la que dos familias del desierto de La Guajira, al norte de Colombia, que se condenan mutuamente a un círculo vicioso y sangriento, mostrando la realidad del país, con un lenguaje brutal y crudo, que deja a entrever la historia de amor que humaniza las páginas de la novela, donde las madres buscan preservar la vida de sus hijos. La escritora explora dimensiones humanas poco vistas en el alma de las mafias colombianas y hace una radiografía de la intensidad y la complejidad de su entorno familia, el honor y la muerte, que giran en torno a su ambición por el dinero.
Es una historia de violencia, de narcotráfico, de poder y de una sociedad en decadencia. Muy al estilo de los Montesco y Capuleto, recrea los esquemas familiares de Colombia, cercanos a nuestra experiencia como latinoamericanos. Leopardo al sol es una novela magistral, que se construye sin fisuras, que se despliega con un fuerte pulso narrativo, enfrentando a dos familias que terminan odiándose y matándose unos a los otros. Lleno de sangre y muerte, es un libro que permite leer directamente la realidad de su país, que no se aleja del resto del continente.
Refleja a los primeros clanes del narcotráfico “como personas generadas por la sociedad y no una plaga maldita al margen de todo. Los colombianos, hasta la década de los setenta, estaban metidos en un mundo en el que dinero no era sinónimo de felicidad. De repente, esa sociedad se transforma y aparecen sótanos en los que se pudren millones de dólares, armamento de última tecnología, grandes matanzas y los carteles que acaban con un poder más fuerte que el del Estado. La entrada masiva del capital genera así "estructuras primitivas, al margen de todo sistema jurídico, en las que la única codificación es la venganza�.
Cuando el libro fue publicado, ya Colombia era una nación violenta, llena de cocaína y de capos. Alcanzaba unos niveles y amplitudes nunca antes visto. Ven aparecer los carteles, los paramilitares y los sicarios, quedando marcados por esas imágenes monstruosas de personajes acribillados a tiros, civiles víctimas de secuestros, balas perdidas o aviones bomba que acababan con ello. Los actos inhumanos y atroces que protagonizan estos entes se van convirtiendo en monstruos que devoran a su país y a su sociedad, siendo esta la realidad que nos sumerge en Leopardos al sol, donde la ficción nace de la realidad.
Tras 11 años de investigación, Restrepo indaga el origen de la mafia en su país. La colombiana interesada en saber el porqué de esta “vaca loca� que los mata como nación y sociedad, construye una novela que habla del tráfico de drogas, que nació de forma “tribal y espontánea, como el contrabando de tabaco�. Crea un relato donde predomina lo visual, con tiempos que van y vienen, a modo de tragedia, donde el hombre se enfrenta a su destino.
La violencia para ella es el “fruto de la yuxtaposición de balsas culturales atávicas con el capital avasallante y la globalización. After reading the first sentence on the dust jacket, I couldn't wait to devour this one: "Imagine the Sicilian history of The Godfather rewritten by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, or West Side Story reinterpreted by Isabel Allende, and you have a sense of Laura Restrepo's unforgettable novel of the making of Colombia's drug cartels." I couldn't have said it better myself. Likewise, since Gabriel Garcia Marquez is my favorite author and was once followed closely in that lineup by Isabel Allende (before her two most recent, weak novels were published), I am happy to report that this book does deliver what it promises. I did, however, find the interspersed "hearsay" sections of the story in italics a bit frustrating. For me, they interrupted the flow of the narrative and interfered with the effect of enchantment, the whole reason I read and love magic realist fiction. However, I understand what Restrepo was going for, because there is always more than one explanation for the magical and strange happenings in good magic realist fiction, and these sections tend to show the warring Barragans and the Monsalves almost as folk heros or villains to the townspeople who make up these choruses of praise or condemnation, but I still thought this was a bit forced. Nonetheless, this novel was delightful in its strange beauty, heartbreak, and humor that at times had me laughing raucously out loud. What I wonder is why it wasn't better publicized to magic realist readers, not just the Spanish speaking ones. It was first published in 1999, but I had heard nothing about it until recently, and that was by accidentally stumbling upon it here on ŷ. Restrepo's "Leopard in the Sun" was everything Juan Gabriel Vasquez's "The Sound of Things Falling" should have been but wasn't. I highly recommend it.

إن الحقد يورّث الكراهية والكراهية توّرث الانتقام.. وبالنسبة لآل بارّاغان وآل مونسالبيه فإن الانتقام والثأر يعتبر واجب عائلي مقدّس تتوارثه الأجيال، على الرغم من أن العائلتين هم أقرباء يربطهم النسب والدم. العجيب في الأمر أن النساء هم من يحافظون على هذا التقليد أكثر من الرجال أنفسهم!
نشهد في هذه الرواية الواقع الأليم في كولومبيا والوحشية حيث يكون الدم بالدم هو الذي يحكم نظام العوائل المتحكمة في تجارة المخدرات. فليست عائلة بابلو إسكوبار هي المثال الوحيد لهذا الواقع (بالرغم من أنها أشهرها) لكن هو حال كولومبيا عمومًا.. إلى أن انتهى الحال بعميد آل مونسالبيه قتيلًا ذليلًا وعميد آل بارّاغان أيضًا قتيلًا وسط إحدى المهرجانات، فالذين كانوا يخضعون له أصبحوا أول المنكلين بجثته انتقامًا لما سببه لهم من ألم ورعب وخوف هو وعائلته على مدار السنين.
أول تجربة لقراءة لاورا ريستريبو وبالتأكيد لن تكون الأخيرة.

Laura a través de sus escritos escarba en conflictos sociales, en este caso uno familiar originado por la rabia, el orgullo y leyes absurdas que desencadenan en sangre donde los Barragán y los Monsalve aplican hasta el fin el Talión. "... El vuelo de un último recuerdo que quedó atrapado en ellas: un desierto manchado por la sombra de las piedras sobre el cual yace la muerte como un leopardo al sol"

Este libro fue una sorpresa. Lo disfruté más de lo que creí, no me aburrió en ningún momento a pesar de que es un género que no leo.

De nuevo Laura Restrepo sorprende con su exquisita narrativa embelleciendo las vidas e inmundicias de las familias Monsalve y Barragán, sumidas en conflicto desde que uno de sus integrantes asesinara a otro de la familia contraria, desatando un torrente de violencia e intrigas que poco a poco se convierten en mito y leyenda. Excelente de principio a fin.

A tale of a familial war among Colombian drug lords sparked by a fratricidal killing. A tale of love, honor, and revenge where the pointless acts of violence toward the men of the families are balanced by poignant love stories and the resilient strength of women striving to protect their children. All infused by Gabo’s magic realism. So many unforgettable characters here; even those who barely appear in the story. Restrepo is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

No conocía a esta autora, en el sentido de que nunca le había leído un libro, tenía entendido que era una novela de venganza en un mundo de narcotráfico. Lo primero si y lo segundo ... digamos que no es una novela del "narco" al uso, el tema está casi que insinuado, creo solo asistimos a un campo de marihuana una vez en toda la novela. La verdad es que muchas cosas son insinuadas, por ejemplo solo hasta el final podemos estar seguros que la novela se desarrolla en Barranquilla. La vida en el desierto es que no aparece por ningún lado, apenas se menciona su ley de "la sangre se paga con sangre".
Restado lo anterior se lee muy bien, el estilo de Restrepo es, por decir lo menos, diferente, las historias se entrelazan a la perfección y en ningún momento decae el ritmo. Es un 7 bien merecido.

The beginning is like something straight out of Scarface; the pock-marked gangster and the beautiful woman he's always wanted are sitting at the bar when a rival enters, yells something about revenge for something that happened 20 years ago, and opens fire. Bullets whizz, people dive for cover, the gangster and his girlfriend are riddled with � no wait, he's the only one who gets shot, killing women isn't honourable. No wait, he's shot, but only wounded. And besides, it was his cousin who did the shooting. And besides, the man he killed 20 years ago was ihs best friend, and the two families' men have been killing each other one by one since. For honour. No, because a ghost told them to. No, for power over the cocaine trade. No, for love. No, because violence breeds violence. And besides, I could see in his eyes that � how did you see his eyes? He always wears sunglasses. I saw him return fire. No, he was unarmed, he was there for love. His men returned fire. He was there alone.
In the end, its all just rumours. What we know for sure: in one of the larger cities in Colombia, the two families Monsalve and Barragan have been at war for decades. One by one they've killed each other off, always on one of the multiplying anniversaries of some previous death, and now they're down to a few last men on both sides; the warrior, the thinker, the poet, the assassin, living in luxury behind locked doors and tinted windshields since they might die tomorrow. And of course their women, wives, girlfriends, sisters, whores. And then all the other people in town, who narrate the whole thing and occasionally start bickering, debating, speculating, inventing to account for the bits they're not actually present for. How did they get here, who said what, who did what, who loves whom, who killed whom, what were his last words, where's it going to end when they make one last attempt to survive this circle of death?
Leopard In The Sun is a deliciously double-bottomed story. It can easily be read as a pure drama, a South American West Side Story with gangsters, a classic showdown between brothers forced by circumstances to be enemies. As such, it works very nicely, if a little predictably; it depends a lot on its characters, where the women are somehow at the heart of it all even though (perhaps exactly because) the story doesn't shy away from it being a brutal macho society. OK, so at times, it's a question of how flowery you like your prose, but even that works into it somehow.
Because somewhere in the corner of the story, we're constantly reminded that a lot of that typical South American magic realism, all the sun and the dark-eyed women with heaving bosoms and the honourable bandits and the mystical old Indians that pop up a couple of times is a cliché and that the narrators aren't an objective camera. As a kick up the backside of literature it's not quite Bolaño, but there's still a point: all of it, the way everyone trips all over themselves to explain what's going on based on their own ideas of what should be going on is just wishful thinking that falls apart as the story progresses. After all, who wants to live in a society controlled by completely ruthless criminals, naked power, greed and violence? Isn't it easier to see the criminals as tragic, romantic, Shakespeare-Márquezian characters? So that's the story that gets told, as the bodies pile. And if the leopard's spots start fading, we know what they're supposed to look like and we can always fill them in.
