Chad, Vincent and their friends are going camping. Chad doesn't even like camping. The only reason he is even here is because the delectable Denise has come along too. Now they are all assembled around the campfire drinking and trying to scare one another with lame horror stories. None of which are particularly scary. Chad is hoping they hurry it up and move along to some more risque games, preferably involving Denise. However, Vincent has one more tale to tell... Nick and Maree just want to have a good night together. But people won't stop messing with them. The town bully, the self-perceived beauty queen, even the local cop want to give them some sort of hell. Maybe that is a very bad idea... Stu just wants to get himself as drunk as possible and visit all the strip clubs in town, ogling and deriding all the naked dancers he can. Pretty much the same thing he does every night. He thought he knew all the exotic dancing bars and strip clubs, but apparently not. Club Styx isn't somewhere he has ever been before... John has come home from the war, a deserter, sneaking back into the country. He hasn't come back the same as he went away. He's brought something with him, a curse, a contagion. And it isn't something he can contain. When it starts to spread, it is going to spread like wildfire and there will be no stopping it... Cody and Jeff are supposed to be on a simple stakeout mission, warned by their brutal criminal boss to follow his orders to the letter. Boredom and curiosity are going to get the better of them, and this basic job is about to get a whole lot more involved... Jenny can't let herself fall asleep. Because when she does, the same thing happens every time. People die in a grisly violent fashion. She's tried everything to halt the inevitable, but she's so sleepy. And drifting off... Josh and Megan are hiking with their group, aiming to reach the peak of notorious Mount MacGinnis. When a freakish thunderstorm drives them all to seek sanctuary in the many caves existing in the mountainside, the duo take the opportunity to explore their developing relationship. However, there are others in this group who appear to know a little more about the mysterious cave network than they are letting on. Before long, it isn't just going to be heavy rain and blustery wind pouring havoc down on these unwary shelter seekers... There is a whole lot of gruesome death and violence inflicted within this collection of macabre tales, but the majority of it contains one common element. Weapons and tools are not utilised here, bloody havoc is caused, with tooth and claw."
Jim Goforth is a horror author currently based in Albury, Australia. Happily married with two kids and a cat, he has been writing tales of horror since the early nineties. Splatterpunk horror that rocks! Jim Goforth offers readers a collection of shorts that is masterfully written. There are no duds here. Each remarkably captivating tale can stand on its own. Goforth's talent shines in these well-crafted stories as he dares you to put the book down when you've finished a story and not read the next. Tension ... gore ... all keep the title in mind ... WITH TOOTH AND CLAW. If you aren't already a Jim Goforth fan, you will be. If you haven't read PLEBS, do.
Plebs was one of the best horror novels of 2014. It was an old school splatterpunk novel that turned the dial up to eleven and ripped your face clean off. How in the hell do you top that? It seems as if Goforth is everywhere these days and as we wait for his latest full length novel we have With Tooth And Claw to tide us over. This is a collection of six short stories and a novella that proves that Plebs wasn't a fluke. Horror it seems has lost it's edge and while some horror writers will use gore and violence as a character, Goforth makes it a part of the plot. These six tales are dark and build a nice link to the foundation that he had successfully built with his debut novel. For fans of Plebs Goforth adheres to the motto of; "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." He is a solid writer that proves that you can craft a horror tale without an overabundant amount of gore. There is a bit of gore and sex here but it isn't there just for the sake of gore and sex.
The problem with a lot of these collections is the amount of filler these present and given its length that isn't a problem. Each story is well crafted and serves as a reminder that when done right, horror is a genre that you can become addicted too. The Laymon influence is front and center and as I read Astraal's Hands I thought for a second that I was reading a lost Laymon story. That's not a bad thing, and there's enough originality in it so that you can easily see Gorth's own style mixing into it to create something that is not only disturbing, but a piece that pulls you in no matter how horrifying it becomes. There's no filler here. This is a horror writer with his feet planted in the past while surging forward to give horror a shot in the arm it desperately needs
With Teeth And Claw takes the splatterpunk genre and moves it forward. We know what to expect and Goforth delivers. This is a writer who will break out in a major way, and if you haven't read Plebs yet you should, With Tooth And Claw is a great place to start and these stories are not only a testament to how great horror can be but it shows us that he's a writer who is hitting his stride. Short story collections are usually hit or miss but this fires on all cylinders and keeps you on your toes throughout out the entire book. Splatterpunk may not be a well known genre, but I have a feeling it will be.
I’m a huge fan of this genre. I watch horror movies and read horror books. Because I’m such a fan, I tend to be critical of a story that is not horrific enough, or engaging my mind. Horror is all about being swept up in the moment, and feeling your heart pump with fear. Unfortunately some stories in this genre just don’t make the cut. I am so glad to say that, Jim Goforth does not fail to deliver exactly what I look for in horror. He injects great character dialogues, making me feel as though I am part of the cast. He is a master of suspense, atmosphere, and for baring the characters terror. Having read Plebs, I was eagerly waiting for another one of Mr Goforth’s books to come out. This one, With Tooth and Claw, has been a great read. The opening story about a frat party in the woods is not a unique concept, but the author’s writing gives this story an originality, absent in many other books of the same ilk. There can be no spoilers, but let me just finish by saying: As you leave one story, you will want to jump right into the next one, and you will be very pleasantly surprised to find that it is entirely different from the one before, and as wonderful. A superb collection of horror stories...My personal favourite ‘Apocalypticism
This is a great collection of short stories. Jim Goforth has done it again. I always enjoy reading his work, he is fabulous.
I am not going to go into detail about the stories, as there would be too many spoilers. Just know that they will make the gooseflesh stand up and make you look about in the dark while reading.
5 out of 5 stars! Highly recommended.

With Tooth and Claw contains a collection of horrific tales that will stay with you. A group of teens of camping in the woods and run into the Creepers. It's not a good idea to pick on the local geek. Two criminals come across a mysterious package with a deadly surprise. Eye gouging, flesh eating monsters and a zombie plague. Highly recommended to horror fans.
4.5/5 A great collection of original stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. The author is talented at spinning a story and keeping the reader engaged. Very well written with just enough gore to keep me turning the pages.
There are 7 stories with the last being the longest. One or two I wished were a little longer as they had potential to expand.
I'd highly recommend this book for horror lovers. Very entertaining. Will be looking out for more collections from this author.
This is my first time reading this author and I am impressed all of the stories had a life of their own and the endings were no expected I loved all the stories and this book is a must read. Please be advised there are no weapons here !
