When Gerald Ramirez and retired rock star Bur Jenkins meet, it’s not exactly love at first sight. Actually, Gerald thinks Bur is using their mutual friend, and Bur seems to get a kick out of messing with Gerald.
To be honest, Gerald’s never been attracted to another man. But then Bur admits he’s attracted to Gerald, and now Gerald can’t stop thinking about what the two of them might be like together. After proving to himself he’s not interested in any other men, Gerald comes forward with an admission of his own: he’s interested in Bur, and he wants to give dating a shot.
Bur never dared to hope for this, but the chance to get close to Gerald is too tempting to resist, even though Bur is sure their relationship will crash and burn. After all, they’re completely mismatched.
Talia Carmichael is a romantic who believes that family, no matter if it is by blood or those you choose as family, is integral to who you are. She is an author who writes sexy stories in a variety of genres. She believes in creating stories that encompass all that falling in love or lust entails, from the highs of that first blush of attraction to the lows of not knowing if you can make your coming together as a couple work, and then finally to the acceptance of the reality of making a life together. It's all about the journey.
Among her books you'll find contemporary, futuristic, fantasy, and paranormal settings with M/M themes that will have a happily-ever-after. Her books are passionate, intense, and real...to fill the craving.
By now it's well known that I have a problem One that requires me to mainline fluff By now we all know about the Crack Attack shelf And that there's no way I'll ever get enough
Talia Carmichael has created a world Where almost everyone is gay Everyone also seems to be related In some kind of confusing but not incest-ish way
(I really don't know how she worked that but there are at least fifteen more books that could be written with all of these gay brothers and cousins)
This story is about the surly but dependable cop named Gerald And Bur, the 25 year old retired rock star At first they really don't like one another But then they rub groins and, well, you know how things are
Here's the thing; Gerald's not gay He goes to a gay bar to see and everything When he ends up not be attracted to anyone He figures out it's only Bur that gets his engine revving
(It takes Gerald two weeks to figure out he's straight except for when it comes to Bur)
From there on out it's pretty smooth sailing While Gerald and Bur go one dates and duel tongues There is a little worry about Gerald bailing But those fears are laid to rest and it's on with the sexy fun
Oh and there's a miscommunication story line Where Gerald thinks Bur is out of work and has no money Everyone tries to tell him that Bur has loads of cash But Gerald won't listen and it drags on until it's not funny
(Seriously, how many times does someone have to tell you that your man has a house and cash before you actually listen to what they're saying?)
I think I gave this two stars Because it's in a series that I'm addicted to I really can't think of another reason And I'll still read the next book because that's what I do
So, the fluff addiction is still going strong And I don't see any end in sight I wonder when the next book is coming out Because the Crack Attack is something I just can't fight
So many things in this book that could have made into heavy angst: - gfy - ex fiancee moved to his bf's house - abuse - - they fight over one's inability to respect the other's feeling about money.
Thankfully, the author didn't take the angsty route. Instead, it's a light, fun story despite negative things happening.
I received a copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads
DNF @21% = automatic 3 stars
Read as part of the Something in Common bundle.
This is a case of the writing style not for me. I won't go in depth, but the lower rated reviews pretty much voice exactly what my issues are. Sappy, when I need a hefty dose of realism in my books. The dialogue doesn't sound as real people would speak- wooden and stilted. Telling and more telling, instead of showing. Insta-love/lust/HEA. Miscommunication. Silly &/or immature behavior by grown men. An abundance of gay characters, especially within a singular family, as if no other orientations exist.
After trying out 3 books in the bundle, giving each one at least 20%, trying to ascertain whether it was my mood, the individual book's plot, or the author, I've decided the writing style is not for me. While I won't be reading any more books by this author, that doesn't mean you won't enjoy them. We each read differently.
This book for me didn't flow like the previous ones did. It lagged behind in the timeline. How is it that Gerald, didn't know the Bur was financially when is friend Miguel is a partner with Bernie. Things need to be explained a little more in detail and not left hanging. You know, books can be written with only one sex scene and they have.
I am giving 5 stars to the whole series...I know I am only at book 3 but this is exactly the kind of series I love...light, funny, so sweet my teeth hurt romantic and with bazillion characters that could potentially mean bazillion more books...I love when everyone knows everyone and when the friends are the family and they all butt into each others´ lives...often I need story with super complex plot and deep characters and believable situations...and sometimes I need these fluffy page turners that make my day brighter
Gerald is a total and utter prat that listens to nobody! It could have done with being a little shorter the miscomunication plot was to drawn out and got boring after a while
Edit 27/14/13: The rating of this book really does depend on the mood your in while reading it. I just finished it for a seond time at I actually kind of liked it! Changing the rating to 3 stars. I'd avise saving this for when your in a happy kind of mood lol.
The love of the mismatched. Gerald has assumed the role of protector to his friend Harper after his husband was killed in the line of duty. The problem is that retired rockstar, Bur, has moved into Harper's house and Gerald thinks Bur is just using Harper.Ìý Bur is really just a friend to Harper because despite Gerald's hostile attitude Bur's attracted to him. Gerald claims to be straight, until Bur lets slip his attraction to him. Gerald is conflicted when he realizes that he's interested in Bur too. Gerald decides to take a chance and asks Bur out. Despite obvious reservations Bur agrees to the date. An unusual match to say the least and a whole cast of characters to support and surprise this unlikely pairing.
Boring, shame I thought to buy and read a nice serie. But something is missing,Ooh that is it the story is written but there is not a real story, only a build up to harpers story.
Resonate is the third installment in the Something in Common series by Talia Carmichael. It is a great addition to the ongoing saga but most assuredly not a stand alone read in its own right. This series has multiple characters and back-stories that make reading the preceding novels in order a must!
This particular entry tells the story of one of the three Jenkins brothers –Wilbur or Bur. He is a talented musician who has been living in England for some year. The death of a friend has brought hi ho and reunited hi with his brothers. All three are now involved in building the homeless facility and Bur has moved in with Harper who recently lost his partner, Karl. Those how know the series will remember Karl being shot in the line of duty and may also recall his on the job partner, George.
George and Bur seem to continually clash; as George is under the miss-assumption that Bur is attracted and living off of the grieving Harper. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Bur is attracted to the very straight George and is incredibly wealthy to boot. (As a side note, the way Ms Carmichael has the character of George continually try to pay for Bur and to find him jobs while completely oblivious to Bur’s actual massive fortune is downright hysterical at times---it made George so endearing—I just fell in love with him!)
As the story progresses we watch as George and Bur fall in love. We see the close knit community of friends and family join round them and protect them as Bur’s abusive parents come back on the scene and wreak havoc, nearly derailing the relationship between George and Bur in the process.
The story line is very involved and, at times, even I who know the series was scratching my head. This is a richly detailed saga and the characters are multi-dimensional—constantly growing and really fun to watch. However, I found the convenient dealing with and dismissal of Bur’s parents and the strange addition and then subtraction of a sister really too easy. I felt these two pieces were rushed and sacrificed so that we could spend more time on the relationship between Bur and George.
I loved the growing love between the two MC’s and even the author’s insistence not to label George either gay, bi, or straight was a fun quirk—but it went on and on and I felt that it was trotted out too often and therefore weakened its plausibility. Also, the constant reference to Bur’s “violent side was cute at first but it was not necessary to continually come back to it just in order to help establish his back-story later in the novel.
All in all, I found Resonate to be a good and worthy addition to the series. It was entertaining, a hot and interesting love story and a humorous case of new love. However, I felt that there were times that the heavy addition of back story, multiple characters and heavy handed use of establishing clues for us to later put together to solve a few mysterious elements often pulled me from the story and left me scratching my head.
All in all I felt that the novel could use a bit of a paring down but otherwise was a good read from start to finish.
RP -Love has a way of sneaking up on us when and where we don't expect it to. This is certainly the case for Gerald Ramirez and Bur Jenkins in Resonate by Talia Carmichael. Bur knows he wants Gerald, but thinks he's straight. Gerald has always though he was straight as well, until Bur comes on to him. Then he realizes that he has to re-think that particular option if he is going to pursue what could be his biggest chance on happiness.
Gerald Ramirez is a complicated man. He's arrogant, bossy, and difficult to get along with. He's also overpowering and overprotective. Most of all, he's never realized just how lonely he is and what he's missing in life with his shallow, detached existence. The indifference may work well for his job as a cop, but does nothing for his love life. Bur Jenkins evokes all kinds of unwanted emotions inside of Gerald, ranging from anger, frustration, and distrust, to a disturbing sense of physical attraction which totally confuses him. Completely thrown by these new emotions and feeling extremely uncomfortable, he knows he has to make a decision.
Bur Jenkins is a man who knows what he wants. At 25, he's retired from touring in his music career. He has the support of his two brothers and has moved not only himself, but his entire band to one place because he considers them all family. Bur is also a man with a violent past and is still wounded from his experiences. Bur is very skeptical when it comes to interacting with anyone's parents and it causes conflict when he is hesitant to accept Gerald's close relationship with his mother. Bur needs to trust again, to realize that everyone isn't like his parents, that some parents are good and accepting and supportive.
I'd recommend this story to anyone who enjoys relationships that are out of the ordinary, along with angst, mystery, intrigue, and one that emphasizes that family is not always comprised of people who share blood. Thanks, Talia, for an enjoyable, entertaining story
NOTE: The first edition of this book was provided by the publisher for the purpose of a review on .
After selectively deleting memories of what has happened in the past of these characters (read the last book's grumpy review) I was able to enjoy this one a little more. Even so, I am on the fence about continuing this series. If I am going to have wildly implausible fluff I prefer it to be of the supernatural flavor, thus making the implausible okay, and even desirable. *contemplates*
I'm a sucker for family, friends, and lovers so I loved this story!! I really like this author's writing style...simple and it gets to me every time. Loved it!
This was of Bur and Gerald...from the previous books, I didn't think Gerald would end up with Bur but it worked. I found Gerald funny and loved Bur. LOL. I especially liked the parts where Gerald was talking about helping Bur finding a job, he's broke, needs direction in his life...gosh...that was hilarious!
I was so excited to read Bur’s story. Out of the triplets, he probably had the most compelling story. Why did he leave home so suddenly one day and how did he make such a rock star success story. Unfortunately, we only learn part of that. Most of the story is dedicated to his confrontations with Gerald, who thinks that Bur’s a homeless, penniless has-been who is mooching off of Harper. Oh, and Gerald doesn’t think he’s attracted to guys. Overall I did like the story, but there was just something missing.
DNF 65% I usually give a book at least 2 stars if the writing is at least good, but the short, choppy sentences started to really annoy me. I couldn't warm to the two MC's and there were so many other characters mentioned throughout the story that it was confusing and distracting. Unfortunately there were also a few too many scenes that were just... boring. I tried to persevere and give it a chance but I faltered at 65% DNF
Some things in this were a little jarring. *SPOILER* Building a place to help for kids in their prior situation and keeping it secret would completely keep kids like they were from the help they are supposed to be working to provide. It seems like a glaring problem to me. */SPOILER* If you ignore things like that it was a good quick read.
Wow they just keep getting better and better to me. I think it's because everyone in the books are starting to feel like friends. I"m so glad this won't be the last book in the series but August is going to be a long time to wait:-)
This book features Bur and Gerald. Bur like his brothers was abused by his parents. The main focus of the book is no the abuse but the love and family Bur and his brothers create.
