A LOVE IN THE BALANCE NOVELLA

Despite every promise to herself not to get involved any deeper than a first date, she can't keep from seeing more of Aiden . . . in more ways than one.

Aiden Downey had no idea the hot blonde from the club would trigger his protective, gentle nature, but the moment she drops her guard and he sees the real Sadie Howard, he's a goner. “I’m breaking some of your dating rules, aren’t I?
“No. You’re breaking all of them.

This was just a short novella and a prequel to Hard to Handle. I do feel like I know a bit more about Aiden and Sadie by reading this, though, and more prepared for the book itself.

I love that it throws you right into the middle of it, after they met in Tempting the Billionaire. I love their chemistry, the sweetness of it all and how they're so perfect for each other.

"Until now, she thought men had only two settings: On and Off. Aiden seemed to be set on Cruise."
Aiden is such a sweet guy. After a failed marriage with a woman who cheated on him, he's just trying to get back on his feet. And then Sadie comes along, and sparks fly.

"She knew the truth about herself, how she’d always been a little too hard to handle."
Sadie is awesome. I absolutely love that she knows about motorcycles. And yeah... she's also been cheated on just before getting married.

So... no wonder these two understand each other. There's this instant connection that only happens once in a blue moon, if ever. But then fear, bad decisions and life in general get in the way.

Please note there is no HEA in this book - this is just a prequel. You will need to read Hard to Handle to get the full story, and I'll surely be reading that next :)

Oh wow, I'm really surprised by how much I liked this prequel novella. Jessica Lemmon's "Can't Let Go" tells the story of how Aiden and Sadie meet. Aiden's a thirty-something guy who just lost his ex-wife to his business partner, and is nursing his ego after being jobless and penniless since his ex-wife won the divorce proceedings. Sadie meets him and the two hit it off pretty well, especially on their second date. I was really convinced of their chemistry and relationship with how cute it was.

But things are complicated in Aiden and Sadie's relationship because while Aiden wants to introduce Sadie to his family, he hasn't told them about his divorce with his ex-wife. Reason? His family's dealing with their mother, who has cancer. Push comes to shove in the way of complications, and it seems the end of this novella is a lead in for Jessica Lemmon's next novel "Hard to Handle."

It's not a self-contained work, but I really enjoyed getting to know the main characters and watching their chemistry. Kind of saddened and frustrated me at the turn it took in terms of the lead in, but I think that was intentional, and it got me to care about the characters. Overall, I found it a nice lead in for the novel, and can't wait to see what "Hard to Handle" has to offer.

Overall score: 3.5/5 stars

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Forever (Grand Central Publishing).

Okay, first things first - I was clear on this to start, but I want to be sure there's no confusion - do not expect a resolution to Aiden and Sadie's story in this novella. This is a prequel about how they meet, and the very beginning of their relationship. This is a book about the mistakes people make even when they're looking at the person that may be the best person in the world for them. About the things that come up and decisions made that can ruin something before it even really has a chance.

I have to admit that I'm conflicted about this novella. I'm not generally a fan of prequel stories like this where there's not really any resolution - at least not positive resolution - and I considered not reviewing this until I finished Hard to Handle where Aiden and Sadie's story is truly resolved. I want to talk about Can't Let Go though.

The title is pretty good actually. Aiden can't let go of his ex-wife - he hasn't told his family about his divorce that's a year old, because his mother's been going through chemo and he didn't want to add stress to her life. I get that, but at the same time this frustrates the hell out of me. Especially when you're trying to start a relationship with someone else. On the other hand, Aiden's incredibly caring and intuitive. He like verbally sparring with Sadie, he treats her with respect and he is very serious about her. I liked him a lot, except for that one deception with his family.

Sadie was pretty great, too. I liked that she's got a smart mouth, but isn't over-the-top snarky. She's got some snark and some sarcasm - and I love it. She's been burned, her fiance left her for someone else just before the wedding was going to take place, and she was finally taking a chance on Aiden. What I didn't like is that she apparently fell immediately for him. After guarding your heart for so long, to the point where you don't even go on more than a single date with someone, I can't see that happening. Especially not to the extent that she did.

After just 2 dates, over a week and a half period, she's thinking love. Excuse me while I frown over here. I just don't buy it. I do buy the connection and like and chemistry and that they'd likely have a great relationship...but love? Give me a break.

Because she fancies herself in love with him, she acts and says some completely selfish things near the end that irritated me. Even if she were really in love with him, then I don't like the way she reacted. It's not normal to think only of yourself when someone is going through something like Aiden was at that moment.

And this is where I'm conflicted. I want to see Aiden and Sadie happy. I'm going to read their book, because despite the things that irritated me, I do like them both. I think they're great together, and that they made some stupid mistakes and decisions. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them work those issues out.

Jessica Lemmon’s Can’t Let Go was originally scheduled for an October release with Hard to Handle set for September, but the dates were changed. While some may hate the ending to Can’t Let Go and call it a cliffhanger, it really isn’t one. If you haven’t read Tempting the Billionaire, you don’t need to in order to enjoy Can’t Let Go, but I do recommend it because you’ll have a better understanding of the time frame. It’s not necessary though!

Those that read Lemmon’s Tempting the Billionaire will remember Sadie and Aiden. Both are secondary characters and we know from Tempting that Sadie ends up dating Aiden. What we don’t know is exactly what happened between the two of them. Crickitt attempts to get to the bottom of it, but Sadie quickly changes the subject and responds to her questioning by stating, “All men are bastards. Can’t Let Go takes place alongside Tempting and I really enjoyed getting the information gaps we didn’t have in Tempting filled. It’s because of this that I don’t consider the ending to Can’t Let Go as a cliffhanger and think of the novella as a supplement to Tempting the Billionaire.

We have great character development and it’s pretty clear that both Sadie and Aiden carry emotional baggage. For Sadie, there’s an underlying issue involving her ex-fiancé, Trey. We also get a glimpse of her relationship with her family and their reaction to her phone’s ringtone says a lot. I suspect there’s more to this and I’m sure Lemmon will go into futher details in Hard to Handle. As for Aiden, his comes in the form of an unfaithful ex-wife and his mother’s cancer. It’s really easy to see why these two would open to each other in some areas and keep others a secret. As much as I want to shake some sense into them, particularly Aiden, I can’t fault them. In their position, I’d probably do the same thing. Ultimately what makes this frustrating is Aiden’s inability to come clean to his family about his divorce. What makes this even more heartbreaking is Sadie’s reaction to it and what she thinks of herself, “She knew the truth about herself, how she’d always been a little too hard to handle. Ah, why doesn’t Lemmon just drive a stake through my heart? My poor Sadie.

A few people might question Sadie’s love for Aiden especially in such a short time period, but I feel I have to defend her. Remember, Sadie has been guarding her heart especially after the incident involving Trey (I won’t go into details because I don’t want to go into spoilers) and it’s understandable she’s cautious. When she meets Aiden, she’s not expecting a connection much less have a conversation about the past. Both open up to each other and it’s the sharing of these past experiences that bring them closer. I know a lot of people also complain about “insta-love in romances and while these two fall fast, keep in mind that love at first sight does happen. What makes these two different is that both are cautious about falling in love, but they are also take the time to get know each other. Aiden is aware of her limits and even though he wants to push them he doesn’t and respects her.

The writing is engaging and there are several humorous scenes. Lemmon has a talent for writing flawed characters and making you become emotionally invested in them. I laughed and cried and by the end of it, I experienced a beautiful emotional roller coaster. If I can take a moment to virtually high-five Lemmon for her use of what I’ll call Easter eggs. This is the second time she’s referenced something related to her hero’s real life inspiration. I’m not saying what they are because it spoils in the fun of coming across these and I love that she does this!

I loved Can’t Let Go and I’m dying for Hard to Handle. I’m secretly hoping there’s a Trey and Aiden confrontation because let’s face it, Sadie needs a champion.

My favorite quotes:

“I hope you killed him and dumped the body in the cement foundation for the hotel.

“I think I could be around you every day and never tire of trying to figure you out.

If you’re a fan of contemporary romances, I highly recommend Jessica Lemmon’s Can’t Let Go. Just have a box of tissues at hand because you’ll need it. If you need to vent your frustration over Aiden, I’m listening!

Can't Let Go is a PREQUEL novella to Hard to Handle, a "before" the happily ever after...

A LOVE IN THE BALANCE NOVELLA

When a family crisis puts the brakes on their budding romance, can Aiden find a way to hold on to her? Or will he lose the best thing in his life just as quickly as he found her? 25,000 words

My Thoughts

In my opinion is a must read prior to book 2 in the series because the back story to Sadie and Aiden's story is very important in setting up the story line in the 2nd book. Having never read the first book in the series we already missed the initial setup to the series and it would be best not to go any further with this particular couple without getting the full details on the beginning of their relationship and the reason why they broke up.

I think you can safely say that a lot of this is covered in the full length novel after having read it but to me it is just a better idea to wait to read Hard to Handle (Love in the Balance #2) after having gotten the full details of Aiden and Sadie's romance.

Can promise you it is well worth your time to read the novella, you will enjoy their full length story more if you do!

3.5 Stars! I was hooked by Jessica Lemmon's first book in this series, Tempting the Billionaire. I fell in love with Aiden and Sadie and I'm pleased we got a look at their beginning through their eyes and not just as a character outside.

Summary:
Sadie Howard and Aiden Downey never expected they would find an instant connection with someone they met in a dark and crowded club. Sadie gave up the idea of fairytales and the chance of love at first sight when her fiancé left her for her sister. Now, she's a one-date wonder, never seeing a man for a second date. However, Sadie definitely can't deny that the sexy Aiden gives the sweetest kisses, and getting closer is all she can think about. Aiden has had a hell of a year. Not only did his marriage implode, but he also lost his best friend and the business they built up together. Aiden knew he was ready to get back out there, but he never expected to meet the woman of his dreams in a nightclub. Luckily, with Sadie, being a couple is easy and comfortable and it seems their connection moves at Mach speed. When Sadie lets her fierce guard down and Aiden sees the real her, he quickly becomes committed. Sadie is unlike any woman he's ever met and makes him feel things he hasn't felt in a long time, if ever. When a family crisis strikes the heart of their budding relationship, it will be a test of their feelings for each other on whether they can hold on to what they have or lose it quicker than it was found.

I liked Sadie. She was an interesting character in Shane and Crickitt's story, and hearing the beginning of her own just served to make her more of an enigma I want to solve. She plays at being so strong, but it's easy to see the vulnerable and fragile woman beneath her tough exterior. I can't wait to read more about her family dynamic in her full-length story. Aiden frustrated me no end! I loved him. His laid back personality made him an easy character to read, and his tumultuous end to his marriage and happenings in his life recently made for an interesting read, as well. I hated his view on telling his family the truth, though. It was a no-brainer. Him and Sadie together was sweet, and I'm interested to see how they work through all their problems. This novella was a nice starts to Sadie and Aiden's story, although I think this could have been included in the beginning of the full-length novel as a prologue. Ms. Lemmon is quickly becoming an author I'm willing to one-click with her sweet romances and damaged characters. <3

Can't Let Go by Jessica Lemmon introduces us to Aiden and Sadie. The meet at a nightclub, and that night go back to Sadie's home together. But the night doesn't end as one would expect as Aiden and Sadie instead bare their soul's to each other instead of their bodies.

Sadie is a one date kind of woman, but Aiden is very intrigued by her. When he asks her to go out again, Sadie surprises even herself by saying yes. After a disasterious ending engagement, Sadie trust no one but herself. She wants to be the one in control, even though she is drawn to Aiden. Aiden shakes her control, making her feel more than she wants to for someone she just met. "Sadie didn't want to feel this kind of attachment to anyone. She didn't want to worry whenever he was late, or whenever he was out on his bike and the weather turned. She didn't want to care this much, dammit."

In a matter of days, Aiden and Sadie fall hard for each other. But Aiden can only let himself get so close to Sadie. He is hiding things from his family, and for now must hide Sadie from them too. Sadie seems to have more issues than a broken engagement, but in the span of a short novella we aren't privy to these. And if Aiden can't be honest with his family, can he be honest with Sadie? He might end up giving up the best thing he's had in a long time, even though he just found her.

Can't Let Go is an introduction to Hard To Handle, a full length novel that will come out soon (I hope!) where I'm hoping we'll delve deeper into Aiden and Sadie's relationship. Crickett and Shane are there briefly, from Tempting the Billionaire, and it looks like we might see more of them in Hard to Handle too. I liked both Aiden and Sadie, even though Aiden especially frustrated me because of his lack of honestly with his family which can only result in hurt for Sadie. No matter what his reasons, I felt like he should have been as honest with them as he was with Sadie. I felt like I got a good grasp on their personalities from this novella.

Jessica Lemmon gives us a quick read with Can't Let Go, I like the feel of it and how it ties into the other books. There's a little bit of sexual tension, lots of humor, and love at first sight (which I totally believe in by the way!). It is not a stand alone novella, and I feel like it ended too abruptly, even for a cliffhanger. I will definitely be reading Hard to Handle as soon as it comes out!

Shoot. Me. NOW.

It must have been "Mom Brain", but I got snookered again. When I had the opportunity to read "Can't Let Go" in exchange for an unbiased review, I didn't realize the damn thing was a PREQUEL.

AAAUUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!

So should YOU read it? YES! YES! YES! Just be aware that you're going to be watching the calendar for October 1st to arrive so you can read Hard to Handle (Love in the Balance) (288 pages for $2.99).

"CAN'T LET GO", written by Jessica Lemmon (& hey - her website is absolutely ADORABLE!) is a novella THAT IS A PREQUEL of 89 pages for 99 cents. Those will be the MOST FRUSTRATING 99 pennies you've ever spent at Amazon, because when you get to the end of "Can't Let Go", you feel like CRYING. Not necessarily because it isn't quite the happily ever after that everyone envisions for the end... but because you can't wait to get [in my best Paul Harvey voice]... "The Rest Of The Story". Jessica Lemmon has done a fantastic job of weaving her character stories in a way that makes you feel for them - heck, I even found myself with tears running down my face at one point (note to self - this is an effective way to clear the room of my 3 male spawn & the assorted friends).

Sadie and Aiden are unlucky in love - he's six months out from a divorce and she was just jilted by her fiance, who left her for her sister. They meet in a bar and the spark is instantaneous and magnetic. Aiden realizes that this is something SPECIAL... and Sadie starts to get her hopes up that she really isn't love kryptonite. But... .... ... you'll just have to go read it yourself to find out more!

Sometimes I approach new authors a bit tentatively; it's like seeing a round brown thing in the middle of the carpet and going over to it, not knowing if one of the dogs has had a little "accident" in the house... or if they've just carried in a rock in their mouth and set it down as a prize for their favorite owner. Jessica Lemmon looks to be the rock with all the little sparklies in it that Demon Dog has brought in to show off. She's definitely become an author for my "Watch List"... and you can bet that I'll be watching for "Hard To Handle" to release!

by is a short novella that gives us the story of Aiden and Sadie, the respective best friends of Shane and Crickett from . Taking place during the same timeframe, we get to see how they met, and how they eventually fall so very completely apart.

So, I am reading and enjoying the story, keeping an eye on the page count. Oh I'm at page 54 of 86 - there's still quite a bit of story left - right? Grrrr!!! Wrong. This will definitely leave you emotionally invested in Aiden and Sadie's releationship and impatiently awaiting their full story, .

Oh, the last 32 pages... Only CHAPTER ONE OF HARD TO HANDLE!!!!
(Happy Dance). It was REALLY good too!

“You’re beautiful when you’re stubborn, he said, then backed away and shut her inside.
-Aiden

For the first time in a very long time, Sadie allowed herself to feel every broken shard of her splintered heart. She mourned the loss of her newfound hope, the loss of the future she’d imagined with Aiden at her side, and the elusive happiness she could never quite capture.

4.25 out of 5. If you have not yet read Book 1 in this series, you owe it to yourself to do so. "Tempting the Billionaire" forms the context in which this and the subsequent novel are originally formed. However, you can read this novella with the assurance that it will make perfect sense on its own. The action in this story runs concurrently with Book 1 but fleshes out the specifics of Aiden and Sadie's meeting, their connection, and the subsequent crash and burn. Why such a good rating? Well I don't usually give novellas and short stories a very high rating because I don't think there are very many authors who can handle this kind of story, develop it as fully as needed, have sufficient words to make the characters shine and the action to be crafted so that it doesn't seem rushed or prematurely ended. Ms Lemmon has done a masterful job of giving readers a truly complete romance, full of verve and the tensions of a new connection between soon-to-be lovers, and still continuing on and amplifying the story between Crickett and Shane, the main characters in book 1. This tale definitely has its ups and downs. I think it is safe to say that it is so well written that readers will truly "feel" the angst and hurt that invades this new and tentative relationship between two people who have probably found the ONE but have the course of True Love overwhelmed by the realities of human life and death. It's a tale that a true romance lover needs to read. It will set up a much fuller enjoyment of the next book, "Hard To Handle." Like all real authentic relationship, the connection between Aiden and Sadie will live or die based on the fall-out from the choices they each make. It is truly a terrific piece of writing.

Yes, Jessica Lemmon's new novella Can't Let Go has a cliffhanger ending. However, if you read Tempting the Billionaire you would remember Aiden Downey and Sadie Howard had a quick starting relationship that turned sour quickly.

In Can't Let Go, we see what happen during the short period Aiden and Sadie were together. This would be the scene we didn't get to see in Tempting the Billionaire. Since Tempting the Billionaire focus more on Crickett (Sadie's best friend) and Shane (Aiden's cousin).

Bottom line: A quick read that will leave hanging. However, Can't Let Go fills in the gap and prepares you for Hard to Handle. Now I wonder how Aiden is going to repair the damage he inflicted. That boy has some major ground to makeup for his stupidity. Overall, I liked the story.

I loved this novella! It was the perfect set up for the Aiden Downey and Sadie Howard's book Hard to Handle. I mean it was PERFECT!!

The novella goes into the meeting and courtship of Aiden and Sadie after they met while introducing you to each character and the troubled past that has made them into who they are.

Even though this is a novella, it does not lack the romance and drama that this series has been thus far. It proves to be a quick read because you get so engrossed in the story. It is impossible not to feel for these two characters and not to fall in love with Aiden. Holy Cow the man had my melting in the first few pages of it. WOW!

I highly recommend reading this book prior to reading Hard to Handle, another fantastic book from the Love in the Balance series. It is definitely worth a read.

ARGH! Good thing I have Hard to Handle on my Kindle or else I would have been very upset. This prequel novella sets up the story of Aiden and Sadie. They met at a club, danced the electric slide and fall hard and fast for each other. Both of them have trust issues, but they decide the other is worth letting go of the past. But a family emergency forces Aiden to change his focus from Sadie to his family and break her heart a the same time.

I fell in love with the chemistry between Aiden and Sadie. Aiden was a man that wasn't afraid of his feelings, despite being a hot motorcycle riding alpha male. Knowing the hard choice he made, I feel for him even more.

Great set up to their full length book...which I'm going to read right now!

Can’t Let Go by Jessica Lemmon
Love in Balance # 1.5
Can’t Let Go is a novella that takes place between books one and two in the Love in Balance series by Jessica Lemmon. This novella was long enough to get me hooked on Aiden and Sadie and short enough to leave me wanting more.
I love Sadie and Aiden. The sweet relationship they are developing is envious. The chemistry between the characters is fan worthy and the banter is a great addition. The writing style draws readers in. I can’t wait for the second installment of this series Hard to Handle.

So, I read Hard to Handle and lurved it! I fell completely in love with Sadie and Aidan, but I kept wishing I knew the whole story of what happened to them. Of course I know it was to care for his mom, but I just wanted more. Well, lo and behold, I had completely missed this little nugget here. Now, stuff makes sense. This is the novella that starts it all for Sadie and Aiden and it is hawt! Loved it!

I am now a huge fan of Jessica's and I can't wait to read more from her

This is a short story coming after Tempting the Billionaire. This is Aiden falling for Sadie. After spending the night at Aiden's, he takes her to the treehouse where he & his brothers hung out. He shows her his Mom. Sadie is scared that things are moving to fast. She thinks Aiden may be getting back with his ex. All that is moot when Aiden calls her from Oregon. His Mom has decided to go to a holistic resort as oppose to going through chemo. Aiden will stay with her as long as it takes. So the break up is done over the phone.

This one was just a pretty small preview and prologue about the actual upcoming book. Enough to make me so EAGER. This one was absolutely different from the first installement. The story, the writing.
I felt it was so much more emotional, deeper. Different, that couple dealt with more, it was rocky.
I still trying to draw a picture of Aiden and it's really hard for me, Men with long hair humm not that sexy for me but I seemed to find someone close, THOR!!!
So now back to the waiting!!

A great novella that gives us the story of Aiden and Sadie when they first met. Despite an instant attraction and strong feelings, when Aiden had a family crisis to deal with the young budding relationship was pushed aside. Beautifully written and an important segment of the series. Recommended.

I've known Sadie as Crickett's best friend and Aiden as Kane's cousin from book one, Tempting the Billionaire, and aware of what's happening between them. So, nothing was surprising in this short story, but more depth on emotion and getting me closer to these two love birds.

Their story only for about 66% of the book, and the remaining was the first chapter of Hard to Handle book and Tempting the Billionaire. It wasn't necessary to read this short novella, but if you already have the book, then go ahead, get to know them better before reading the main story.

I enjoyed this book, albeit it is a little short, and felt a little rushed, I liked it nonetheless.

The characters are sweet and lovable. I want to read and know more about them.

The only gripe I have about this little novella is, it felt like it is a small car zooming all over with its tiny booth packed to the rim with too much luggage. It is moving too fast and carried too much......to me....at least.

Having said that, I like it enough to want to read the next book in the series.
