On the day author Mari Morgan receives the email, she has little left to live for.
The message—simple yet utterly life-changing—offers a glimmer of hope to her dismal existence. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime, and if she takes it, it could change everything.
Mari’s immediate sense of unease is eclipsed only by her curiosity—elicited from the supposed fan on the other end of the email. Unsatisfied despite doing her due diligence, and with no way to discern the legitimacy of the sender, Mari takes a leap of faith and replies.
What harm could come from one innocent message?
Soon, as she comes face to face with her ‘number one fan, it’s all too clear things are not what they first appeared. Now trapped by a villain far more sinister than she could’ve crafted herself, the fate awaiting her is inspired by the darkest depths of the monsters in her own novels.
In order to escape and survive, Mari must use the strength of the heroines she’s spent years writing about. But this villain has spent years inside her worlds, too.
How will she defeat an evil who has learned from the best?

Finally a book by modglin that hit home! It was worth the loooong and sometimes frustrating wait while plowing through some of her recent, silly work. The suspense was there, it was outlandish but in a good way, and the heroine was pretty awesome.
Going in half-blind was AWESOME! I didn't quite know what to expect and it was a surprise with the first reveal. Don't read the blurb if you don't want to know.😉
Author Mari has gone through a life-changing tragedy and with it a struggle to write. Just before noon and a swig of vodka, Mari goes through emails on her phone.
An opportunity to get one of her novels adapted to screen by an award-winning producer. Surely, it has to be a spam? Mari's not buying it but is still curious, she did her due diligence making sure the company was legit and it was. The company even produces one of her favorite TV shows. What could go wrong if she replies to this Owen?
A lot? 😬
Do Not Open is hard to put down and Mara Wilson's narration is excellent. If you're a fan of a famous horror author you will immediately recognize the inspiration. There are plenty of twists and unexpected turns. I thought the last reveal was terrific and unexpected. Easy to finish this one in a sitting or two.

A short and thrilling read with intense and somber themes. This is the stuff of my nightmares so at times it was a bit uncomfortable to read, but the short chapters held my attention and made it easy to stop and start as comfort allowed. The ending impressed me with its unexpected twists, tie-in of all the details, and complete wrap-up. It's well worth it to stick with it even if the subject matter gives you the heebie-jeebies as the ending shifts the story into an unexpected and surprising sphere.
What in the Wattpad Misery fanfiction did I just read?????? I’m assuming this selection was a “Bookstagram Made Me Do It because I have no recollection of why this got put on my TBR, but when my turn at the library came up and I saw the low page count I figured what the hay. I also noticed my few ŷ friends who read this all 5-Starred it, so once again I am a horrible wrongreader who will roast in the fiery pits of some literary hell once I pass on.
The premise here is a drunken female author narrator (so original!) who gets contacted by a movie producer wanting to potentially turn one of her books into a feature film. Apparently Harvey Weinstein doesn’t exist in this chick’s world because she agrees to a meeting at his house . . . where he proceeds to Dollar Store version Annie Wilkes the crap out of her.
Note to youngsters who might not be old enough to understand the reference, but if you ever meet someone for the first time and think to yourself . . .
“If Ben Linus from Lost had a twin, this would be him.
Well . . . .
And if you manage to get out of captivity more than once only to be retrieved again and again????

Mari is an author that has received an enticing email. She'll soon learn that responding to it will be one of the biggest mistakes of her life when her captor starts taking pages out of her own disturbing books.
Does Mari make the best choices when she's fighting for her life? Not really, but who knows what we'd do if we were in the same circumstance...let's hope we don't have to find out. Her last ditch effort to save herself was a nice touch.
Fast paced and suspenseful with a nice twist I really didn't see coming, so woo hoo for that.
Narration notes: I feel that Mara could have been slightly more frantic in some parts, but overall fine.
*Thanks to the author, Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
I believe that it's best to dive into this one blind. But for those who are curious, here's a quick rundown: Mari Morgan is a talented writer, a suspense and thriller author whose novels are nothing short of gripping, but after a personal tragedy, she finds herself struggling to put pen to paper. Just when she's about to give up hope, an unexpected opportunity comes knocking on her door. Though hesitant at first, Mari knows she can't let this chance slip away. But what she doesn't know is that this opportunity is not what she expected, and what follows is a rollercoaster ride of suspense and thrills that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Highly recommend to fans of darker thrillers! It was a quick and captivating read that could easily be devoured in a couple of hours.
***Thank you to NetGalley, Kiersten Modglin, and Dreamscape Media for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
Misery was my first true horror book and it has always maintained a special place in my heart. This book has some clear Misery vibes and I was definitely there for all of it. I loved the way the very ending tied up and added just one more level of question and horror. The twist came late with this one but it was still excellent. This is definitely a perfect book for Halloween and a horror novel that will not let you put it down. Mari is a thriller writer, but she hasn’t been writing since an accident caused her to lose her family. Caught in a cycle of too much alcohol and not leaving the house Mari gets an email with an offer that almost seems too good to be true. What follows could be found in the pages of any of her books.
Prepare to have your assumptions shattered as 'Do Not Open' takes you on a literary joyride filled with unexpected twists and turns..

Summary
Author Mari Montgomery, feeling at the end of her rope, receives a life-changing email promising a transformative opportunity. Despite initial unease, curiosity prevails, leading Mari to respond to the supposed fan. As events unfold, it becomes evident that her 'number one fan' is a sinister villain, trapping Mari in a perilous situation inspired by her own dark novel creations. To survive, Mari must tap into the strength of her heroines, confronting a threat that has infiltrated the worlds she meticulously crafted.
My Thoughts
Kiersten Modglin's ‘Do Not Open is a captivating story that bears a striking resemblance to the premise of Stephen King's "Misery." If you found the latter intriguing, this novel promises a similar engrossing narrative centered around the theme of obsession.
The book is a quick and short read, maintaining a tense atmosphere throughout its pages. It's an ideal choice for those seeking a brief yet compelling story. Modglin skillfully incorporates good twists, leading readers to form assumptions that she masterfully shatters later on. This technique keeps you guessing and engaged until the very end.
The novel delivers both suspense and fast pacing, complemented by Modglin's admirable attention to detail. However, some of Mari's strategies, particularly one involving food, raise questions about their feasibility. It's challenging to imagine that particular approach yielding success.
Mara Wilson, the narrator, skillfully contributes to the book's success, creating a captivating atmosphere that elevates the entire experience. Her exceptional performance not only adds to the thrill but also keeps the reader grounded during the more intense and graphic moments, showcasing her versatility and enhancing the overall impact of the narrative.
Despite minor queries, the book excels in delivering an excellent ending, a crucial aspect where many novels falter. Modglin manages to wrap up the story with finesse, ensuring reader satisfaction and solidifying the overall impact of ‘Do Not Open.
Recommendation
Kiersten Modglin's 'Do Not Open,' is a riveting tale of obsession and suspense. With a quick and tense narrative, unexpected twists, and a satisfying conclusion, it's a good choice for fans of psychological thrillers.
Extremely fast read, I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book. It's one of those you have to devour in one go, and it's easy to do so since it's pretty short. The tension was so good, I was actually scared for Meri and my heart was beating fast. There were some moments where I wish she did things differently, but it was a very satisfying read.
Bonus points for the twists at the end, I didn't see them coming.
One last thing, DO NOT READ THE BLURB!!! Just start the book. OK? Ok.
The authors books are always one sitting, binge worthy reads for me but this one was on a whole new level of addictive for me. Everything about this was heightened, it was more intense, it was creepier, it was even faster paced than usual and it was everything I want in a thriller and more. Things went super dark and disturbing and at this time of year that’s exactly what I crave. Everything about this felt slightly unhinged and I mean that as a compliment. I never really knew what would happen next so it definitely kept me on my toes and made for such a suspenseful reading experience. The combination of emotional upheaval for Mari and a series of unexpected twists made this one such a solid read for me, if you like dark thrillers that give you the creeps this was so good!
Another gripping and intense book by KMod! I was leaning more towards three stars but the ending chapters bumped this up to 4 stars. KMod does an awesome job tying everything together and throwing in some unexpected plot twists as always.
Do Not Open by Kiersten Modglin is a fast paced, on the edge of your seat thriller not knowing where it is going. Mari is an author who reacts to an email to meet some guy at his house (which I would never do in a 1000 years) and things escalate from there. It kept me guessing till the end.
I liked parts of this book, but some parts made me go utterly "WTF!?" - like the main character thinking toothpaste is poisonous enough to kill someone. Is this something being taught to kids in the US? Seriously...???
Also, I'm not convinced mint chocolate chip ice cream can hide the taste of toothpaste all that well. ALSO, if you stir ice cream that much ... it will bloody melt. That whole scene was such an utterly stupid idea, I'll NEVER get over how stupid it was.
Another thing: I never got the hang of how old Mary is supposed to be. Her behaviour and the way her timeline is explained is all over the place.
She has anxiety like an overgrown teenager, but it was eventually revealed her kid was 18 when he died so she must be at least over 30...? At first I got the impression the son must have been really young (like, 2 at the most, or something) when the horrible something happened, but then suddenly he was 10 years old. And then 18. It was handled in a way I didn't like.
The twist was actually really nice, but it alone might have been the only part of the book I really liked.
All in all: Stephen King this author ain't. (And I would like to add that I'm not even a King fan.) There's even a reference made to Annie Wilkes so the author has clearly written the story with Misery in mind, but this book mostly feels like an enthusiastic fanfic. There's an attempt to make the idea original, but as a whole it didn't quite work for me.
He is her favorite fan. What could possibly go wrong? Does Misery by Stephen King come to mind? In breakneck fashion Kiersten Modglin treats her readers to a wild ride in her latest book. While you think you might be reading the same story, you just might find yourself surprised at the depth in this book.
In this thrilling read, Mari is in fact a thriller writer. Due to a tragic event, Mari lost her family and also her ability to write. Well, one fan is not accepting that. He has a plan to get Mari writing again, and will go to any lengths to make it happen. This leads to Mari deciding to open a questionable email. She soon finds that it could’ve been one of the worst decisions of her life.
With fast pacing, well timed twists and a few shocking surprises, Kiersten Modglin has proved to be more than excellent at her craft. So, if you want a dark story for a dark holiday season, you cannot go wrong with Do Not Open.
Many thanks to Kiersten Modglin for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Holy cow! I got this ARC late last night and woke up early to start this bad boy. I not only started it but finished it in one sitting.
I said KMods last book was her best but holy smokes this is it..100% her best work yet. I’m absolutely flabbergasted. This book will leave every author and reader scarred for life!
I found myself biting my nails then turning around chuckling with Mari’s thoughts. How you can be scared and laugh at the same time is beyond me but KMod made it happen!
This is #1 book of the year for me. Do Not Open will haunt you long after reading.
Hard to rate because I absolutely loved the first 85ish percent. It was fast paced and engaging and hard to put down. The ending took a very dark and depressing turn that I didn’t see coming and I did not like it at all.
I enjoyed this one. It was super fast paced and kept me intrigued. I did feel like a lot of the plot was pretty obvious but one of the realizations at the end threw me for a loop.
A grieving author receives an email from a company who is interested in turning her books into a tv production. Taking a chance on life Mari decides to meet with the head of the company in hopes to make a deal. Her meeting ends up going sideways when she realizes this is not a business meeting but more of a meeting between her and an obsessed fan of her writing.
There were many disturbing elements to this book. I thought it all came together well in the end.
4 Stars This might be the last book I finish in 2023. Not a bad rendition of Misery by SK with a twist. Mary, who's a writer, goes to speak to a movie producer who is interested in making one of her books into a movie. Seems Mary doesn't have much in her life as she doesn't have her husband or son. I didn't expect the ending, so it wasn't a bad book. There were two character povs throughout the book that were well written. I've read better books by KM.
DO NOT OPEN may be a nod to MISERY, but Kiersten Modglin made this story wholly her own.
Mari Montgomery doesn't have a lot left to live for. Once a successful writer, the words just won't come to her anymore. She's lost her husband and son in a vaguely referenced shooting, and she tends to find solace at the bottom of a bottle instead of creating stories at her desk. When she receives an e-mail one day from a fan praising her work, she's shocked to see that the sender owns a production company. Needing this opportunity more than she'd like to admit, she lets her best friend silence that little voice that cautions, "𝑩𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍."
It isn't long before Mari realizes she's made a terrible mistake, and she finds herself trapped with a monster in human form. Be aware that some of the scenes, while I wouldn't call graphic, are much darker than what appear in her previous books. However, they are absolutely integral to the storyline and weren't at all disturbing to me.
When I tell you that the tension I felt throughout this book was palpable, I mean that I was barely breathing. It was as if when Mari was hiding, I was right there alongside her. As a long-time reader of this author's books, I thought I was used to her twists, but this one absolutely blindsided me, and I said out loud, "What the f**k?" and sat there dumbly with my mouth open. She was far from finished, and before I recovered from that one, she hit me with one that left me absolutely silent, eyes filled with tears. Yes, I know I sound hyperbolic, but it was that intense.
This book was so much more than a thriller. It was about confronting fears, accepting loss, and moving on even when all you want to do is give up. It is also a haunting tale of how social media has given us so much access to people we admire, and that is often a double-edged sword. As always, I thank the author for my place on her ARC team and for this stunning early read. DO NOT OPEN will release most appropriately on October 31, 2023.
Whoa. What just happened?? I read this book in a couple of hours. The suspense was intense and the twists at the end hit me like a freight train! I do wish it had been a bit longer and more involved. Mara Wilson has a very pleasing and soothing tone even as she reads the more gruesome parts. This audiobook was a pleasure to listen to, thank you @dreamscapemedia and @netgalley for the opportunity to listen to this title for an honest review. #DoNotOpen #netgalley
For fans of Misery, YOU, and Behind Closed Doors, million-copy bestselling author Kiersten Modglin brings us a haunting tale of obsession and survival in the form of a writer’s worst nightmare come to life.
Another fast paced and action packed book by KMod! Expect Modglin’s typical twisty, suspenseful drama. A story of toxic relationships, obsession and one that will keep you on your toes. I flew this audiobook, it was brilliantly narrated and highly entertaining. Pub date 26 December.
As with many KMod books, I really enjoyed this one! There were some great twists, drama, and nail biting moments. Part of me still felt like something was missing (maybe since it’s a shorter book), and at times I really didn’t like the main character, Mari. Overall it was still a quick, interesting read!
Why do I even try with this author. To me, she is the queen of good stories and then killing the ending with some outlandish nonsense that ruins the book but she really did a number with this one.
⚠️ There may be some spoilers so beware ⚠️
Author gets an email from a man who says he’d love to turn her book into a movie/series (I honestly can’t remember) and with a little hesitation decides to give it a chance and meets this man at his home. At his HOME. Once she gets there she has a couple classes of wine and when she starts to get uncomfortable deciding to leave she guess what? Can’t because she’s been drugged.
The book wasn’t even 200 pages and the amount of times she was able to escape to only be caught again was ridiculous. Eye rolling ridiculous. Over and over again. It was too much. I’m sorry. It just became so silly. The ending had a tiny surprise but overall I just couldn’t believe this was something her publisher thought was a good idea to go to press.
As I began reading, I was excited to see another book with an author as the main character. Mari experienced a tragedy that she was unable to overcome so that she could resume her new normal. However, she’s intrigued at the prospect of turning a book into a film, but that’s only the beginning of where things go wrong, or so she thinks. KMod ALWAYS captivates her readers and hooks you from the first chapter. There is no “slow and steady in her thrillers, and this one was riveting to its core. As you probably guessed, the ending isn’t able to be guessed. I’ve never been so shocked in all of my KMod reading. I was sad to see this one end, but I’d just experienced a roller coaster of emotions in the final few chapters. Modglin wrote this one seamlessly and really portrayed a heartbreaking turn of events in a powerful, impressive way. While jarring, it was a side of tragedy we don’t often see, and it was well done. Kiersten, thanks for the advanced copy and for another astonishing read. I’m literally at a loss for words, and my emotions are now all over the place.
I didn’t think K-mod could write anything that could top The Arrangement. Totally should not have underestimated her because here she is…Killin it. Move over The Arrangement, I have a NEW FAVORITE…Do Not Open! I absolutely loved this book. I felt like Kiersten went a little bit dark with this one and I am all here for it! Yes! More of this please! Fantastic book with a Halloween release date…which is the perfect release date in my opinion for this book! Cancel all your plans and dive into this one. You’re gonna love it!
Thank you to the author for this early copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
