For a beginner in web development especially a responsive one is a bit confusing, i myself had a lot of dilemmas while working on my academic project. Various frameworks such as bootstrap, foundation, web development tools such as bower, using CSS preprocessors, etc
have been explained in a very systematic way so that novice as well as professional developers can work & learn with ease.

The main advantage of learning to develop by referring this book is by example projects (not 1 but 3 different sample projects) that have been created step-wise, which is a great way to learn for starters.
The concept of 'mobile first' is explained very well in this book, as the next generation of web development will be(or has already begun)
hugely based on handheld devices, so the website must fit exactly as per the device that demands the website.

The book contains lots and lots of external references relating to the frameworks, more info on designing & development frameworks and even a good resource to get images that can be useful to design a responsive website. Also good practices on how to organize a project folder systematically so that it can be easily managed, so that it can become a habit on how to organize a project and manage it.
I would highly recommend this book to students who are taking steps in the world of creative web development.
this book deserves a 10/10 really..!!!!

Responsive Web Design by Example is an excellent piece of work which helps the reader to understand the fundamentals of how to go about creating responsive websites with minimal hassles.

This book is intended for beginners who are familiar with HTML and CSS and want to understand the concept of Responsive Web Design and are intending to design one. It gives a quick peek into various technologies which would have not known to them (at least i found quite a few). There is very good balance of theory as well as code which makes it more interesting to read. One good thing i liked is the pointers to additional information which makes this book a must have.

It introduces three frameworks Skeleton,BootStrap and Foundation and highlights the features associated with each of them. Frameworks are good to use but they come with a overhead called learning curve, this books helped me in reducing the learning curve by making me understand the exact things which i needed to know to use these frameworks.

Gone are those days where variants of a website (Desktop, Tablet and Mobile) were maintained, Its time for Responsive Web Sites. To keep in pace with the technology shift this book is a good starter.

Now i can confidently say i understand the concept of Responsive Web Design and if you ask me i can design one for you.

“Responsive Web Design by Example
Written by Thoriq Firdaus

An excellent introduction to the topic of responsive web design -
“Responsive Web Design by Example
( ), provides step-by-step worked examples using three of the most popular responsive frameworks currently available.

The book is extremely well referenced throughout, giving the reader access to much more information on various aspects of responsive web design without unnecessarily cluttering the main body of the book.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to designers and webmasters alike who are catching on to the fact that not everyone accesses their websites in the same way.

Responsive Web Design is the future of web design.

As a data practitioner and BI person I am always looking for ways to present my data more visually appealing and yet easy to share. With the advance of the internet technologies and the introduction of the HTML5 standard in particular it became increasingly easier to create sophisticated, professionally looking single page websites rich in content delivering insights in realtime.

Responsive Web Design by Example book met my expectations in my attempts to grasp with and build some foundation to delivering 21st Century web experience to my users. This relatively long book for beginners is actually covering a lot of ground. From setting your web development shop tools to embarking on enterprise grade Foundation Framework which is used by the most prominent companies, to using Koala and compiled CSS.

The journey though was not without some small hiccups where bower would not function on my Ubuntu ( provides the workaround), nevertheless, going through the book was pure fun. Thoriq does provide excellent support to his readers. The tools selection was tasteful and carefully chosen. The reader will build several stunning websites the author calls simple (well for me it was pure art).

The most important aspects of the book I realize are the old IE polyfills and the use of Koala, the second most important item would be minimized/compressed JavaScript libraries and then LESS (CSS enhancers). The book also covers all the needed nuances to when it comes to building portable/mobile device friendly web sites, this is a must nowadays to account for small viewports. Bower, NodeJS are covered, but I would take courage to say not deep enough, but hey it is a beginner’s book, besides, Packt has a number of books on the latter. Let me stress that out: I suggest extra reading on NodeJS because it is the cornerstone of many single page web applications.

The book does not stop at implementing the basics, but shows how to extend a framework. I suggest the reader should concentrate on the Foundation Framework the most because out of all it looks like being the most likely used at your next project or be in demand on the market.

Good book for those starting in the enterprise web development.

Excellent job Thoriq and Packt Publishing, I am giving this book a 5 out of 5!

Drawback is these lessons are geared to specific platforms, such as Bootstrap.

The first edition is by now more than just a bit outdated. The basic work flow and tools are still a good starting point, but you will need to read more or buy the 2nd edition.
