This volume put in some work with the storytelling, as we have a lot of moving pieces - figuratively and literally:

- Killua continues his solo rampage, laying waste to a number of incompetent Chimera Ants. Unfortunately, he get's upended by what I would consider the first overpowered Nen ability in the HxH thus far: FISH DARTS. At least Kil gets a new ability out of it - if he can survive the blood loss.

- You'll probably be wiping your eyes from the budding new friendships. Killua and Gon each found their own Chimera Ant allies, respectively: Ikalgo, the "cool" octopus, and Meleoron, the over-cautious chameleon. This deepens the connection to the Chimera Ants and their past humanity.

- Meanwhile, it seems Meruem, the Chimera Ant King, has finally met his match - in a board game. Oddly dedicated to mastering every board game to pass the time, he beats all the masters he can find until the blind, sniffling Komugi wipes the floor with him in a fictional game that resembles chess. As the main villain is beaten down again and again, his minions and our heroes toil on.

- Morel gets caught by Cheetu's new TAG, YOU'RE IT Nen ability, which is interesting in that Morel immediately pokes the ability full of holes. Every superpower story has a character like Cheetu, but it's often not addressed: Someone so caught up in their ability that they lose all logical views on its weaknesses.

In Cheetu's case, he conjures up an 8-hour game of tag in a small pocket dimension. The immediate flaw is in the 8 hours: Cheetu is the fastest being around, but has the patience of a 2-year-old. So instead of chasing him, Morel just takes a nap and waits for the ant to get bored. I fully appreciate this battle for its logistics and wish more superpower shows and comics would call characters on their BS abilities. We don't have to see every ability actually work.

- Enjoy the Knov portal showcase.

Here we go. This is Hunter x Hunter in its element. Creative conflicts based around of the wall abilities and conditions. Strong character writing. Small scale encounters where any one could be the spark to light a carefully built powder keg. A ticking clock. Charming personalities. This is what Hunter x Hunter is about! I was skeptical about this arc a little while ago, but things have really turned around here. There's a clear path forward and both sides are being active in furthering their goals without overextending and starting up a full blown clash. So you're on the edge of your seat because you know one wrong move could be all it takes to wake the sleeping giants of Netero and Meruem. And if those guys join the fray, all these other characters we've been introduced to on both sides won't stand a chance. This leads to an exciting back and forth as each side tries to carefully feel out the other's powers. It's almost like a cold war style setup, where you have Killua inciting riots as essentially a proxy war, covert infiltrations, Ants jumping sides, and the looming threat of unstoppable destruction.

I'm so happy this series is back on track.

3.5 / 5

This volume seemed like mostly filler TBH, and nothing much really happened, aside from a couple of quick battles with Kil and a rather prolongued one with Morel (which is TBC in the next volume). We also have the "King" trying out his abilities with board games for some reason, and a potential new ally for Gon and co. revealed. A lot of set up, and not a huge amount of follow through at this stage honestly 8'D

Chapter notes below for reference:

"This is a trap. Will you still come?"
"I don't care. Die."

I loved Killua so much. It was so good seeing how damn smart he was. How much more cool can he get? And to think he was willing to sacrifice his body to finish his mission. Even on the verge of death, he still think that he wasn't much of a help to Gon. Damn, kid. You've help more than enough.

As Killua met a friend in Ikalgo, Gon also met Meleoron. Who would've thought that they'll be having two chimera ants as an ally? Those two would be an important tool to complete their mission of separating the royal guards from the King.

The fight between Morel and Cheetu was also so interesting. I admire how quick Morel's mind worked despite being in a disadvantage because of his opponent's unbeatable speed. He's right. It was not a battle of speed, it was a battle of mind. I always loved it when I don't know what to expect with these battles.

the reason the ant arc drags on and on is because we keep getting introduced to a million side characters that i*m supposed to care about but i simply do not. there is not enough time put into the character design to get me fully invested, and it seems stupid to stray away from established characters i already care so deeply about.

but nevertheless we push on, if only to return to the phantom troupe one day

I was very interested in the stuff with the King and playing games in the castle. It makes him feel surprisingly human for his demeanor. I wonder if they're going to play him off as more evil out of naivety and a lack of understanding of the world. I know very little about the character, but I like him a lot. Killua was very cool too.

Killua kicks a lot of ass while the Ant King plays board games with people.

Chased into a forest by the dragonfly Ant, Killua stumbles into a trap wherein he is forced to kill a hell of a lot of Ants with his bare hands, in order to keep his yo-yos and electroshock powers hidden. There's this thing that plagues the manga as a whole, which is mild censorship with see-through black boxes laid over the more graphic scenes of violence. Somewhat bothersome when they ruin the otherwise-extremely-fluid combat by sticking out a little too much. There are a couple panels that are just cut off in favor of showing pitch-black wedges, which is actually a more interesting artistic/aesthetic choice. And the censorship is maybe justified anyway, as Killua utterly destroys these Ants.

It's still amazing that Togashi's art often looks a little "rough" or overly-simple at times, yet his masterful eye is ever-vigilant with his fantastic fight choreography. So much movement in single panels, with the action flowing wonderfully in subsequent shots.

The Ant King meets Komugi, allowing him to calm his tits a bit in favor of playing games with her, instantly fleshing his character out more than just DUDE MURDER LMAO, which of course has the added consequence of further developing the weight of the story arc, being indeed the greatest arc in the shounen action genre.

****

EDIT (06/27/2024): "Why you...! How dare you fart in my face!!"

I think I might want to start listing all the fights per volume, but I've gotten well over halfway through this re-read, so maybe I'll save it for next time?

Eh, idk, let's go:

Killua versus centipede(?), bombardier beetle, and monkeys
Killua versus Ikalgo
Killua versus Ortho siblings
(Meruem versus Komugi... in Gungi)
Morel versus Cheetu

It continues to disgust me that people on 韁惘軓氈 call Togashi's art "bad." I bet they enjoy the 2011 anime, too lmao

I remember the first time I read this volume I was completely overwhelmed by my feelings...and I can't help but be thankful I've read it before because it happened once again.

The very first part of this volume surrounding Killua's fight was completely intense. I couldn't help but be always worried about him. I mean, he ran and fought for 30 hours straight, only to suffer blood loss and then continue to withstand even more attacks. It was simply too much for him too handle and walk away effortlessly, and more importantly, when he feels like he's about to die his thoughts immediately go to Gon. My poor heart couldn't take it. Killua still doesn't think he is good enough for him. The thing about this entire arc is that it demonstrates that they are just kids, that have been faced multiple times with adult situations, and although they are mature for their age, they ARE still just kids.

Anyway, we finally meet Komugi here!! I love Komugi's character, and Meruem is already questioning what he knows about humans... I can't help but be excited for what will happen next (even if I do already know what's going to happen)

Iiiiiih... seperti biasa, nerjemahin Hunter itu susaaaaaaah ;;;_______;;; Saya emang masih harus banyak belajar huwehuwehuweeeee...
Selain balon dialognya banyak, Hunter itu biasa banjir "penjelasan". Entah itu penjelasan jurus, penjelasan permainan/game, penjelasan nen, penjelasan karakter, penjelasan lain-laiiiiiinnnn ;_____;
Dan pas bagian penjelasan-penjelasan itu, pasti deh bahasanya susaaaaah ;______; dan teksnya panjang-panjang kayak kereta api ;________;
I'm tired of this series ;____; Bebaskan dakuuuuuuhhh ;_____;

Terus, otak saya melepuh-lepuh deh... hik hik hik hik hik x"D <-- emot tertawa pasrah

The best volume of the series I've read thus far. It seemed very familiar, even though I'm sure I've never read this series before. I feel like I must've read a couple of these chapters before somewhere, maybe someone posted the key chapters as an excerpt somewhere and I saw it or something.

Regardless, the section with the King and the game master is one of the best sequences ever in a shonen series - this has been a good series that I've enjoyed thoroughly till now, but this has placed it in a different category for me.

We've reached the point where everyone has split up and is doing their own battles, so that maybe when they get to the big climax everyone will come together again. Killua goes real violent but up against a nen power that is fun but brings a distinct lack of true counterplay and strategy that HxH relies upon. Gon is off being Gon and doing Gon things like making friends and being a dope. Other characters are doing whatever. There are some cool scenes, and I like that the chimera ant side of the battle is getting more attention- the King is showing some personality, there are morally ambiguous chimera ants, some of them are showing themselves to be more goofy instead of purely violent monsters.

Lots of spinning wheels here, with some of the more interesting developments but also some of the most boring fights. Look at this title! Volume 23... 6... Part 1... come on bro don't tell me this is gonna take 200 chapters or something.

? Full Duckified Review 每 Hunter x Hunter, Vol. 23

This volume? Absolute strategic quacktastrophe 〞 in the best way.

Gon teams up with a former enemy, because nothing says character growth like teaming up with someone who once tried to murder you. Killua*s off doing something dangerous, quiet, and very Killua. He might be fighting an emotional octopus. He might be making a new bestie. He might be bleeding somewhere dramatically. Classic.

Then there*s Dart Mug Guy 〞 because of course this arc throws in bar-themed death matches. Every page feels like someone shuffled a deck of chaos and said, ※Let*s go.§

And the King Ant? Oh, world domination can wait 〞 there are board games to master and unsettling feelings to unpack. Watching him lose (and win) at Gungi is weirdly touching and terrifying.

The tension is thick. The alliances are uneasy. The vibes? Impeccably weird.

Peak Hunter x Hunter.
I laughed, I stressed, I ducked for cover.

Okay this battle is giving all chess move vibes now. Slow and calm and steady. One wrong move and ...poooof!
Shaipouf will get you! Haha. Sorry I couldn't resist. Bad joke.

Anyway this volume had some intriguing developments. The King for one is becoming more interesting to me. Initially I did not view him as anything but an inherently vile, violent and callous creature but his obsession with mental games, board games is hinting towards something I wish I could pinpoint.
This new game of Gungi seems like it will have some bearing on the character of the Chimera King but for the life of me I cannot figure out how.

The Royal Guard's loyalty is unmatched and there are times I forget that they are all evil and need to be dealt with. *sigh* I need to control my darkness.

P.s. Morel and Cheetu's face-off was hilarious. Haha.

This volume has everything. The chimera ant king meets his match in a board game, Gon and Killua befriend chimeras, Morel and Knov's abilities are showcased, Knuckle is feeding strays and Cheetu conjures an 8 hrs long game of tag as his new ability 每 which turns out to be quite idiotic considering his short attention span. I absolutely love how Morel instantly pokes holes in Cheetu's new ability and calls him out on it, something I wish happened more in supernatural fiction. Also, octopi are cool!
