This was the first place I had my first piece of poetry published. I am forever grateful to have been added to this collection of honest writings about relationships.
I have always been fascinated with words, interactions, and the various modes in which we communicate with one another. As a child, I would lay in bed hearing my parents fight and I would replay their scenarios thinking about all the different outcomes one of the had altered their actions. These early years of observation helped me understand that the way we communicate with one another can make or break the outcome of that particular interaction. I believe that it is part of my life's mission to use my gifts as a way to create effective change in individual lives and the greater community.
Growing up in Western Pennsylvania was not easy as a "mixed kid" that self-identified as black. I was routinely teased by white students about my dominant features. I'll never forget how a classmate in high school said "You are the reason the evolution theory exists." Pair that with what I was dealing with in school and my abusive and traumatic home life, It took me a long time to grow into the confident woman that I am today.
I want to help children build their confidence as early in life as possible so they, too, can become strong and fearless when faced with racial and other adversities about being "different." It is just as important to create content to teach white children how to treat people of color. I believe that the earlier you plant and nurture the seeds, the greater the chance children will mirror the positivity that they are taught.
I love to inspire, motivate, mentor and encourage others. My life's adversities have always been used in a way to help others through their own turbulence. I don't have all the keys to life but I do have the strength to climb the mountain and the voice to help others through their own pain.
Eventually, I'd like to help others publish their works in order to tell their story. Our individual story is detrimental to the fabric of human life.
I currently reside with my son in Washington, DC. I am a strategic communications and organizational development professional of 20+ years. I have worked with numerous grassroots and political campaigns that empower the black community. I am an ANTIRACIST.
