First the fire, then the heat

A brutal home invasion. Two small, traumatized survivors who may have witnessed the horror. Lieutenant Sam Holland has never worked a case quite like this one, in which her eye-witnesses are five-year-old twins. But when Sam steps up in a big way for them, she risks her heart as much as her career. While Sam and her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano, go to battle in more ways than one for her tiny witnesses, her colleague Sergeant Tommy “Gonzo Gonzales battles his own demons. Months of unbearable grief and despair come to a head in an unimaginable way that threatens Gonzo’s status with the department and his relationship with his fiancée, Christina. With trouble both at MPD headquarters and on the case, Sam struggles to keep her priorities straight at home and at work while trying not to lose her heart to her latest crime victims.

2024 Update
My feelings remain the same and unchanged. Just as good the second time around.

2019 Review
Lieutenant Samantha (Sam) Holland and her homicide team’s latest case is a house fire in an affluent area of the Washington, D. C. area where two people died and it wasn’t an accident. More ominously, they appear to be the owners and their 5-year old twins are missing. Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Tommy (Gonzo) Gonzales is battling his own demons, spiraling downward following the murder of his former partner, A. J. Arnold, right before his eyes. His home life is in shambles and now it’s starting to affect the job. All this as they all prepare for Sam’s partner, Freddie Cruz approaching wedding.

This was a challenging case I found really interesting as it involved classic police procedurals, taking unusual and unpredictable turns as the homicide team investigated emerging clues. The one thing I loved about it was how they truly operated as a team under Sam’s focused leadership despite the many distractions. The mystery is my first love and this one had all the elements to make it intriguing but heartbreaking.

Another aspect of the series that keeps me coming back is the depth of character development, not only of the main characters but the host of secondary ones that enrich the stories. Gonzo’s story was chillingly realistic and gut wrenching; no corners cut, no glamorizing. I wouldn’t recommend reading these out of order (though you can) as you would miss out on how backstories are often reintroduced when they continue and become relevant again. It all just makes for a more satisfying reading experience.

I switched to the audio editions for this series after book #3 and am loving it! Eva Kaminsky does a great job managing a large cast of characters and giving voice definition to some of the more prominent ones (notably Sam and Freddie) with distinction. I love this series and this story in particular. There are some stunning developments with far reaching implications. You’ll have to listen (or read) for yourself to discover the details without my spoilage. The author states in her acknowledgment that there is no end in sight for this series and I’m extremely happy about that, especially if they’re as interesting as this one and those that came before. 4.5 stars

My Review:

I haven’t read all thirteen books in this series but I have greatly enjoyed all of the action-packed volumes I have completed. I adore this power couple, comprised of a Metro Homicide Police Lieutenant and Vice-President of the US. They enjoy a sexy and ultra-supportive relationship of mutual respect with clever banter and sizzling chemistry. The storylines were clever, intriguing, fast-paced, well-crafted, and unpredictable.

I absolutely LOVED this book!!!!!!!! I'm so in love with all the characters, but especially with Sam and Nick, they are true relationship and couple GOALS!! I had the BEST time reading this book. And lucky me I could read it in one sitting, no interruptions, just me, Sam and Nick and the rest of the cast.

I feel almost bad saying it out loud, but I love the FATAL series even more than my beloved JD ROBB In Death series, and this is the reason why:

I get more time with my favorite couple.

The author balances the suspense incredibly well with the romance. It's not just about the case. It's about the main couple Sam and Nick, their dynamic, their life and how passionately in love they are. But it's also about their families, partners and friends.

I could gush about this series for HOURS - I'm not kidding!!! But I'm not going to. And since this is book 13 in an ongoing series, me talking about the plot is not going to happen either. But what I can talk about is the way the characters pull me in.

Sam and Nick's relationship is incredible. It's exactly how a relationship should work. A give and take, a balance of compromises and hard work. A deep love and respect for each other, unlimited support and an equally unlimited supply of trust. Both, Sam and Nick, work so hard on being a happy and supportive family, if needed they move heaven and earth to make this happen. It doesn't hurt that they passionately love each other, and it speaks volumes about the kind of relationship they have.

Each book in this series, delves deeper into the different relationships between the cast members. With each novel, each character becomes more deeply layered, complex and fascinating. In contrast to JD ROBB, the individual POVs in the FATAL series, allow for a more deeper and meaningful glimpse into the thought process of some of the most important cast members in this series. The connection between reader and cast is so much more REAL and raw at times because of these individual POVs.

At this point all I can say is - READ this series!!!

If you are a fan of romantic suspense put Fatal Affair #1on your tbr. If you love a power couple that kicks ass, is devoted to one another, and understands each other on an incredibly deep level - you must give Sam and Nick a chance!!

I have!! And now I'm so in love with this series, and will be binging on it every year.

A brutal home invasion, a double homicide, and an arson. The only potential witnesses are two five year old twins who have been traumatized beyond imagination. Lieutenant Sam Holland has vowed to not only solve the case and find justice for the victims, but to ensure the safety of her young charges. With her very unique brand of police work and her bevy of equally entertaining support characters, this story turned out to be a thrilling whodunit!

I met so many wonderful people in this book and I'm more than a little annoyed that I haven't read any of the other books in this series. Nick and Samantha have the sort of marriage that every marriage should aspire to be. They're best friends, lovers and partners. Their love is felt in each and every scene, whether they share it or are apart. After getting to know them in this book, I can't wait to see how they fell in love.

I'm going to start this series from the very beginning. However, that isn't necessary in order to understand and follow along with this particular leg of their journey. It's one case and a glimpse into the lives of the people who help bring it to a close. This particular book will definitely tug at your heart strings and it will be so worth it!

Another great read from this author. I love Sam. I think I might have mentioned this in previous reviews! I love her kick-ass attitude, her "take no shit" attitude, her strength, her love for her family and her colleagues and her putting those assholes in their place, those who deserve it! You know who I am talking about.

"Does your family know you're guilty of being a dick? Of course they do. Silly of me to ask."

She has to deal with some right pricks.

Sam marched to the beat of her own drummer ...

"What the fuck?"

I think Sam uses the word "fuck" more than me ... well, maybe not!

I will say Goodfuckingnight now and I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

2018 saw me inhale Marie Force’s Fatal series to date, and the 13th instalment is as fresh, fast-paced and emotion driven as each of its predecessors.

description If there’s one thing we ought to know by now, it’s that there’s nothing predictable or guaranteed about this life of ours.

As always, Force balances suspense with romance as Sam is faced with solving a heart wrenching homicide case resulting in 5-year-old twins becoming orphans, alongside juggling being a mum, Nick’s imminent trip overseas, her partner’s upcoming nuptials and her Sergeant spiralling as he continues to cope with past events. And everything knits together perfectly, creating tension, feeling and humour, and opening the way for future developments.

description Badass cops are not adorable.
“Mine is.

I have some serious love for both Sam and Nick and if you‘ve yet to introduce yourself to them and their family, friends and colleagues, rewind to #1 Fatal Affair and experience it from the start as these characters will welcome you into their fold as one of their tribe, share their highs and lows with you and you’ll laugh and cry alongside them. What more could you ask for.

Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Fatal series is one of the best in this genre and rather unique. Most romantic suspense series are based around something like a police force, security company, military team or something similar with each book featuring a different couple. This series is all about the same couple as they progress in their relationship and careers. I like it.

I seem to be surprised by where the story goes in each new book. I make assumptions based on the blurb and they were wrong. That's ok. The key events going on in the story are Nick's trip overseas, a home invasion homicide case, Cruz's wedding and Gonzo's struggle with his partner's death.

In Fatal Invasion,as with the previous book, we spend much more time with Sam and her character than with Nick. Often the female is the key point of view in a romance, but I do feel like I am losing my feeling of Nick's character. His interactions are standard for him with no depth. The primary action and issues here are related to Sam's work though, so his role is more a supporting one. I am sort of annoyed with Sam's attitude here and in the last few books; I'm a special snowflake so I don't have to follow the rules.

The five-year-old twins were a key piece of the mystery and I loved them. I felt for their fears and uncomfortable situations. Sam, Nick and Scotty were amazing with them and it was awesome. I felt so proud of Scotty.

Gonzo's difficulties were a layer of realism thrown in like so many things we all experience. In daily life, we have multiple factors, problems, ideas and worries. The wedding was a great time of connection and celebration for co-workers, friends and family.

I wish we had more page time with Sam's siblings and her father. Sometime I hope someone will solve her father's shooting. I enjoy each story as the characters and relationships progress, along with a homicide case or two. I'm attached to these characters for the long haul.

Narration:

I've listened to Eva Kaminsky on the last few books in this series. She is the sound of Sam for me, but she gives a great voice for Nick and the other characters, including the children. Each character has a distinct tone. I was able to listen at 1.5x speed which is new for me recently. Her performance is a pleasure for listening.
Listen to a clip:

Excerpt of Chapter 1:

“This is aclassic case of be careful what you wish for. Nick placed a stack of folded dress shirts in a suitcase that already held socks, underwear, workout clothes and several pairs of jeans. Only Nick would start packing seven days before his scheduled departure for Europe next Sunday, the day after Freddie and Elin’s wedding. “That’s the lesson learned here.

“Only anal-retentive freakazoids pack a week before a trip. Sam sat at the foot of the bed and watched him pack with a growing sense of dread. “Three freaking weeks. The last time you were gone that long, I nearly lost my mind, and I don’t have much of a mind left to lose.

“Come with me, he said for the hundredth time since the president asked him to make the diplomatic trip, representing the administration on a visit with some of the country’s closest allies. Since President Nelson was still recovering—in more ways than one—from his son’s criminal activities, several of the allies had requested he send his popular vice president in his stead.

Sam flopped on the bed. “Ican’t. I have work and Scotty, and Freddie is going on his honeymoon fortwoweeks and I can’t. No Nick at home to entertain her. No Freddie at work to entertain her. The next few weeks were going to totally suck monkey balls.

“Actually, youcan. Nick hovered above her, propped on arms ripped with muscles, his splendid chest on full display. “You have more vacation time saved up than you can use in a lifetime, andyou have the right to actually use it. Scotty will be fine with Shelby, your dad and Celia, your sisters and the Secret Service here to entertain him. We could even ask Mrs. Littlefield to come up for the weekends.

Their son’s former guardian would love the chance to spend time with him, but Sam didn’t feel right about leaving him for so long. However, the thought of being without Nick for three endless weeks made her sick. His trip to Iran earlier in the year had been pure torture, especially since it kept getting extended.

“Why’d you have to tell Nelson you wanted to be more than a figurehead vice president? She play-punched his chest. “Everything was fine when he was ignoring you.

He kissed her lips and then her neck. “You’re so,socute when you pout.

“Badass cops donotpout.

“Mine does when she doesn’t get her own way, and it’s truly adorable.

She scowled at him. “Badass cops are not adorable.

“Mine is. Leaving a trail of hot kisses on her neck, he said, “Come with me, Samantha. London, Paris, Rome, the Vatican, Amsterdam, Brussels, The Hague. Come see the world with me.

Sam had never been to Europe and had always wanted to go, so she was sorely tempted to say to hell with her responsibilities.

“Come on. He rolled her earlobe between his teeth and pressed against her suggestively. “Three wholeweekstogether away from the madness of DC. You know you want to go. Gonzo could cover for you at work, and things have been slow anyway.

There hadn’t been a homicide in more than a week, which meant they were due, and that was another reason to stay home. “Don’t say that and put a jinx on us.

“Come away with me. Scotty will be fine. We’ll FaceTime with him every day and bring him presents. He’ll be well cared for by everyone else who loves him. He kissed her neck as he unbuttoned her shirt and pushed it aside. “You’d get to meet the Queen of England.

Sam moaned. Shelovedthe queen—speaking of a badass female.

“And the Pope. Plus, you’ll need some clothes—and shoes.Lotsof shoes.

“Stop it. She turned her face to avoid his kiss. “You’re fighting dirty.

“Because I want my wife to come with me on the trip of a lifetime? Ineedyou Samantha.

As he well knew, she could deny him nothing when he said he needed her. “Fine, I’ll go! But only if it’s okay with Scotty and if I can swing it at work.

“Yes, her husband said on a long exhale. “We’ll have so much fun.

“Will we actually get to see anything?

He pushed himself up to continue packing. “I’ll make sure of it.

“Um, excuse me.

“What’s up?

“My temperature after your attempts at persuasion.

A slow, lazy smile spread across his face, making him the sexiest man in this universe—and the next. “Is my baby feeling a little needy?

She pulled her T-shirt over her head and released the front clasp on her bra. “More than a little.

“We can’t have that. Stepping to the foot of the bed, he grasped the legs of her yoga pants and yanked them off.

“Lock the door.

“Scotty’s asleep.

“Lock the door, or this isn’t happening. With Secret Service agents all over their house, Sam couldn’t relax if the door wasn’t locked.

“This is definitely happening, but if it’ll make you happy, I’ll lock the door.

“It’ll make me happy, which will, in turn, makeyouhappy. She splayed her legs wide-open to give him a show as he returned from locking the door, and was rewarded with gorgeous hazel eyes that heated with desire when he saw her waiting for him.

“You little vixen, he muttered.

“I don’t knowwhatyou’re talking about.

“Sure, you don’t, he said, laughing as he came down on top of her and set out to give her a preview of what three weeks away together might be like.

They broke thenews to Scotty the next morning at breakfast. “So, Nick said tentatively, “what would you think if Mom came with me to Europe?

Thirteen-year-old Scotty, never at his best first thing in the morning, shrugged. “It’s fine.

“Really? Sam said. “You wouldn’t mind? Shelby, Tracy and Angela would be around to hang with you, and Gramps and Celia too. We thought maybe Mrs. Littlefield could come up for a weekend or two if she’s free.

“Sure, that sounds good.

Sam glanced at Nick, who seemed equally perplexed by his lack of reaction. They’d expected him to ask to come with them, at the very least.

“Is everything okay? Sam asked her son.

“Uh-huh. He finished his cereal and got up to put the bowl in the sink. “I’m going to finish getting ready for school.

“Okay, bud, Nick said.

“Something’s up, Sam said as soon as Scotty left the room.

“I agree. He didn’t even ask if he could miss school to come with us.

“I thought the same thing.

“We’ll have to see if we can get him to talk to us before we go—and not in the morning, Nick said.

“I’ll ask Shelby to make spaghetti for dinner. That always puts him in a good mood. Sam’s phone rang, and when she saw the number for Dispatch, she groaned. “Damn it. You jinxed me! So much for getting out of Dodge without having to worry about work. She took the call. “Holland.

“Lieutenant, there was a fire overnight in Chevy Chase. The dispatcher referred to the exclusive Northwest neighborhood that was home to a former U.S. president, ambassadors and other wealthy residents. “We have two DOA at the scene, the dispatcher said, reciting the address. “The fire marshal has requested Homicide detectives.

“Did he say why?

“No, ma’am.

“Okay, I’m on my way. Thankfully, she’d showered and gotten dressed before she woke Scotty. “Please call Sergeant Gonzales and Detective Cruz and ask them to meet me there.

“Yes, ma’am.

Sam flipped her phone closed with a satisfying smack. That smacking sound was one of many reasons she’d never upgrade to a smart phone.

“You’ll still be able to come with me, right? Nick asked, looking adorably uncertain.

Sam went over to where he sat at the table and kissed him. “I’ll talk to Malone today and see if I can make it happen.

“Keep me posted.

A ringing phonewoke Christina Billings from a sound sleep. Two-year-old Alex had been up during the night with a fever and cold that was making him miserable and her sleep deprived. Her fiancé, Tommy, had slept through that and apparently couldn’t hear his phone ringing either. He was due at work in an hour and was usually up by now.

“Tommy. She nudged him, but he didn’t stir. “Tommy. Your phone.

He came to slowly, blinking rapidly.

“The phone, Tommy. Answer it before it wakes Alex. He needed more sleep and so did she, or this was going to be a very long day.

Tommy grabbed the phone from the bedside table.

Christina saw the word Dispatch on the screen.

“GDzԳ.

She couldn’t hear the dispatcher’s side of the conversation, but she heard Tommy’s grunt of acknowledgment before he ended the call, closing his eyes even as he continued to clutch the phone.

Christina wondered if he was going back to sleep after being called into work. She was about to say something when he got out of bed and headed for the shower.

Nine months ago today, his partner, A. J. Arnold, had been gunned down right in front of Tommy as they approached a suspect. After a long downward spiral following Arnold’s murder, Tommy had seemed to rebound somewhat during the summer. But the rebound hadn’t lasted into the fall.

In the last month, since his new partner, Cameron Green, had joined the squad, Christina had watched him regress into his grief. He’d said and done all the right things when it came to welcoming Cameron, but he was obviously spiraling again, and she had no idea what to do to help him or how to reach him. Even when lying next to her in bed, he seemed so far away from her.

Sometimes, when she had a rare moment alone, she allowed her thoughts to wander to life without Tommy and Alex at the center of it. She loved them both—desperately—but she wasn’t sure how much more she could take of the distant, closed-off version of the man she loved. They were supposed to have been married by now. Like everything else, that plan had been shoved aside to make room for Tommy’s overwhelming grief. It’d been months since they’d discussed getting married. In the meantime, she took care of Alex and everything else while Tommy worked and came home to sleep before starting the cycle all over again.

They didn’t talk about anything other than Alex. They never went anywhere together or as a family. They hadn’t had sex in so long she’d forgotten when it had last happened. She was as unhappy as she’d ever been. Something had to give—and soon, or she would be forced to decide whether their relationship was still healthy for her. She didnotwant to have to make that decision.

Only the thought of leaving Tommy at his lowest moment, not to mention leaving Alex, had kept her from making a move before now. She loved that little boy with her whole heart and soul. She’d stepped away from her own career as Nick’s chief of staff to stay home with him and had hoped to add to their family by now. When she thought about the early days of her relationship with Tommy, when they’d been so madly in love, she couldn’t have imagined feeling as insignificant to him as a piece of furniture that was always there when he finally decided to come home.

Christina hadn’t told anyone about the trouble brewing between them. In her heart of hearts, she hoped they could still work it out somehow, and the last thing she needed was her friends and family holding a grudge against him forever—and they would if they had any idea just how bad things had gotten. Her parents had questioned the wisdom of her giving up a high-profile job to stay home to care for her boyfriend’s child, especially when she’d made more money than him. But she’d been ready for a break from the political rat race when Alex came along, and she had no regrets about her decision. Or she hadn’t until Tommy checked out of their relationship.

This weekend they’d be expected to celebrate at Freddie and Elin’s wedding, and she’d have to pretend that everything was fine in her relationship when it was anything but. She wasn’t sure how she would pull off another convincing performance for their friends. Tommy was one of Freddie’s groomsmen, so she’d get to spend most of that day on her own while he attended to his friend.

Dangling at the end of her rope in this situation, more than once she’d thought about taking Alex and leaving, even though she had no legal right to take him. Another thing they’d never gotten around to—her adoption of him after his mother was killed. What would Tommy do if she left with his son? Call the police on her? That made her laugh bitterly. She’d be surprised if he noticed they were gone.

Tommy came out of the bathroom and went to the closet where he had clean clothes to choose from thanks to her. Did he ever wonder how that happened? He put on jeans and a black T-shirt and then went to unlock the bedside drawer where he kept his badge, weapon and cuffs.

She watched him slide the weapon into the holster he wore on his hip and jam the cuffs and badge into the back pockets of his jeans, the same way he did every day. Holding her breath, she waited to see if he would say anything to her or come around the bed to kiss her goodbye the way he used to before disaster struck, but like he did so often these days, he simply turned and left the room.

A minute later, she heard the front door close behind him.

For a long time after he left, she lay in bed staring up at the ceiling with tears running down her cheeks. She couldn’t take much more of this.

This one was so sad, so very sad. I don't think Sam has any business taking on two young children. She just can't seem to understand that being a mom means putting your children first and that means you do everything in your power to keep them safe and that means first and foremost, keeping yourself safe. Sam just doesn't seem to understand that her husband and the children in their home need her to be there for them.

Two innocent parents are dead after a brutal home invasion robbery. Two young children are terminized and Sam is caught in this tragedy. The kids cling to her, and she is determined to protect them. Everyone believes this was the fulfillment of a threat by the father's business partner, but Sam isn't so sure. She follows every lead and finally comes up with the real murderer.

Meanwhile, her sergeant, Tommy "Gonzo" Gonzales is spiraling after the death of his partner with his addiction to pain medicine taking over his life. Sam has a lot to juggle with Gonzo heading for rehab and her partner heading to the alter and her husband heading to Europe and two children who need a stable home.

Lt. Sam Holland and her team are investigating a housefire in an affluent neighborhood that left two people dead. This wasn't an accident. The bodies had been tied up, beaten, and tortured before the house was set on fire. Are they the owners of the house? If so, where are their five-year-old twins? As Sam digs into the owner's past, Sgt. Tommy Gonzales has his own problems. He is still blaming himself for his former partner's death. This has affected his job and his relationship with his fiancée Christina.

This is another good addition to the Fatal series. The case they were working was intriguing. The family had changed their names and moved to Washington DC after a serious threat against them. Did the father's former partner catch up with them? I wasn't sure what was going on with them since the mother seemed afraid to leave her kids alone, but the father really wasn't hiding himself very well at all.

Gonzo is suffering from PTSD after seeing Detective Arnold killed right in front of him. He is also abusing opioids and spiraling out of control. I found this situation very realistic in the way it was handled. My rating: 4 Stars.

Right up there with the best of them! Such a great story told here - gotta love Sam and Nick, bantering, action, some nasty people, some set backs and new challenges! This is one of the best in the series! I couldn't stop reading. Thank you Marie Force.

From the blurb: A brutal home invasion. Two small traumatized survivors who may have witnessed the horror. Lieutenant Sam Holland has never worked a case quite like this one, in which her eyewitnesses are five-year-old twins. But when Sam steps up in a big way for them, she risks her heart as much as her career.

While Sam and her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano, go to battle in more ways than one for her tiny witnesses, her colleague Sergeant Tommy "Gonzo" Gonzales battles his own demons. Months of unbearable grief and despair come to a head in an unimaginable way that threatens Gonzo's status with the department and his relationship with his fiancee, Christina.

With trouble both at the precinct and on the case, Sam struggles to keep her priorities straight at home and at work while trying not to lose her heart to her latest crime victims.

5 stars (which I don't give out very often) and 2 thumbs up!

Thank God! I was so afraid that this series was going downhill after the #12 debacle, but this one was actually very good!

Here we have action, investigation, insight with other couples, sweet moments... And everything is perfecly balanced! It is still too perfect, but there's just enough bad to balance things!

I'm happy that it got back in track!

5 Star Review of Fatal Invasion (Fatal # 13) by Marie Force

Since this is book 13 in the series, there is always the concern that the books could get repetitive, however in my opinion this is not the case.

Although this is book 13 in the series, I do not believe that anyone new to these books would have trouble following the story, however I would encourage you to go back and read the previous books as and when you have time.

This was one of those books I was riveted to from start to finish, I didn't want to put it down as I found myself saying just one more chapter, Nick and Sam are so well suited to each other and their love continues to grow whilst living complicated and at times dangerous lives.

This book touched on their family and friends more than the last one and at times had my stomach in knots. Ms.Force still manages to give you not only a book full of twists and turns but the heat and sizzle between Nick and Sam was scorching.

You will be drawn into not only their story, but those of their family and friends, as such is the skill of Ms.Force you cannot help but become invested in all of the characters. I always love catching up with Sam, Nick and Scotty and their extended family.

Fatal Invasion is full of romance, danger, suspense, humour and plenty of complications to keep you guessing to the end.

Fatal Invasion is another great addition to one of my favourite series from Marie Force. I cannot wait to read the next in the series which I believe is Fatal Reckoning which will release on 2019.

On first glance, the synopsis of this book is very similar to Survivor in Death with Sam taking in children who are witnesses to their parents' murders. But that's about it. Sam has such strong maternal instincts that we don't really see in Eve.

This is a book that deals with lots of different issues. The murder solving is almost secondary. Which is perfectly fine as it's the characters and their relationships that hold my interest, same as for the In Death series.

I'm glad that Ms Force said there will be lots more books for this series, although I was very sad when I read the first chapter of the next book Fatal Reckoning. :(

Refreshing myself with the series before the latest book.

The whole premise of the Second Lady working as a Homicide Lieutenant is just a bit unreal. Of course she would get her way if she wanted those orphaned kids. There's still a lot of stuff going on with Gonzo and I didn't get any inkling of what would happen to Skip in the next book.

Overall, similar to the In Death series, I'm probably more invested in all the characters in the series than with the crimes themselves.

I am all about this series. Any book in this series (any book by this author, for that matter) goes straight onto my "to read" shelf- sight unseen!

Sam Holland never does anything the easy way but she'll always do the right thing, and that is just one of the many reasons why she is so much loved by her friends and her loved ones.

And she does the right thing for a couple of traumatized five year-old kids when their parents are murdered in the most horrific way ever: she finds justice for them and also opens her heart and home to them.

But this story is much more than that. It's about the type of relationship that everyone hopes for: a true partnership with respect, love, acceptance and appreciation for everything both partners bring to their relationship.

It's about Sam finally adding to her family, only not the way she had expected.

It's about the friendships that enrich both Sam and Nick's lives and how their friends trust them to always be there through the good and bad.

More than anything, I am loving the growth and change that Sam and Nick go through with every addition to this series and I have to give props to the author for growing the characters in a way that keeps the stories interesting and the readers still invested after so many books.

Another satisfying book in a series I love. I really liked the family emphasis in this one and where it takes the second family in their journey.

Well now that was one explosive, fast-paced, emotional read which is what I have come to expect from Marie Force and her Fatal series, she never disappoints.

Sam and Nick are back and seriously better than ever, a home invasion that may be more than it seems or could it be something fairly simple, Freddie and Elin are about to walk down the aisle of marriage, Gonzo is spiraling way out of control and Christina has finally reached the end of her rope or has she can love really conquer all or are some hills insurmountable?

I am always excited for the next Sam and Nick story, release day is always a day where the world stops so I can dive straight into the story and Fatal Invasion was worth the wait and so much more.

It had been a very long time since I picked up a book in this series, and in a way, it was like finding an old friend all over again, but I had changed a bit and the friend hadn't. Don't get me wrong, the story was engaging and very entertaining, but it also felt very formulaic.

Sam and Nick hadn't changed or evolved from previous books, so it fell to the supporting cast to carry any emotional growth. That came in the form of Gonzo, but I really felt like he deserved more "screen time" in the book to make the changes more meaningful. I liked that we got "status updates" about a lot of the other couples in the series, so that everything felt up to date.

It was a good book in the series, but not the best one.

Thirteenth in the Fatal series and each book just keeps getting better and better and one I couldn't put down. In this installment, a pair of 5-year-old twins captures Lt. Sam Holland's heart when they are finally found after their parents are killed and their house is burned. Has one of the twins seen something? Is it the one who refuses to speak after being brought to Sam's house? Why have their parents been killed and by whom?

The most likely person is their father's former business partner, who's been on the run for three years, but Sam knows that the most likely perp may not be the right perp. And things at work are not all as they seem, either. Take Gonzo. Why is he acting strangely and why hasn't Sam or her partner, Freddy, noticed enough to check in with Gonzo?

Then VP Nick Cappuano is scheduled to go to Europe for a three-week political trip. Sam wants to go with him, but her work responsibilities make that impossible. Right? Maybe not, especially with the Chief, her uncle Joe, does not approve her having taken in the twins when she's leading the investigation into their parents' death.

With all this going on, how is she going to manage? Perhaps after the twins older brother, in college, arrives to be with them when they are told about their parents. Who will take the twins when an aunt and uncle, and a pair of grandparents seem less than enthusiastic? Will they become part of Sam and Nick's family? Their son, Scotty, hopes so. Read this continuing installment and hope, with me, that a fourteenth will soon emerge from Force's talented pen.

Fatal Invasion by Marie Force is a perplexing mystery with a likable cast of sympathetic characters. Although this newest release is the thirteenth installment in the Fatal series, it can be read as a standalone.

Lieutenant Samantha "Sam" Holland is hoping to go on a foreign trip with her Vice President husband Nick Cappuano when she is called to the scene of a horrific fire which left two people dead. The victims are Jameson and Cleo Beauclair, a wealthy couple who are devoted to their five year twins, Aubrey and Alden. With little known about the Beauclair's personal lives, Sam, her partner Detective Freddy Cruz and the rest of her team are struggling to solve their murders. Their investigation is also hindered by numerous personal issues plaguing the detectives assigned to the case. With so little information to go on, will Sam and her crew find justice for Jameson and Cleo?

Sam is dedicated to her career and she is a gutsy detective who does not anything or anyway stand in her way during the investigation. She is utterly besotted with Nick and she is angsting over his upcoming trip which is rather out of character for the tough as nails, independent woman she is purported to be. Sam is also quite close to her co-workers which becomes a bit of a problem when one of her detective's problems interfere with his ability to carry out his duties. Torn between being the boss and a friend, Sam is nonetheless supportive of his efforts to straighten out his life. Balancing out this somewhat heavy story arc is the upcoming wedding of another detective. While interesting, this personal drama quickly overpowers the mystery aspect of the storyline.

The murders of Jameson and Cleo are particularly grisly and Sam and the rest of squad are determined to find their killer. Unexpected information from another law enforcement agency takes the case in a new direction, but Sam tries to keep an open mind as they track down leads. Could the murders be linked to trouble from Jameson's past? Or did something in the couple's present day lives lead to their deaths?

Fatal Invasion is a fast-paced mystery but unfortunately, the suspense element is completely overshadowed by the drama in the detectives' lives. Some aspects of the storyline are rather far-fetched and although the killer's identity is rather surprising, the resolution of the case falls a little flat. Marie Force tugs on readers' heartstrings with the emotional scenes with little Aubrey and Alden. Despite the somewhat predictable wrap up, the novel ends on a heartwarming note. It will be interesting to see what will happen with Sam, Nick and the rest of the cast in the next installment of the Fatal series.

This addition to the series reminds me why I fell in love with Sam & Nick in the first place. I've been less than thrilled with the last couple of books in this series, but really enjoyed this one. I do love these characters and felt more of the old magic while reading this story. Suspense, romance, & cute kids! Quite a huge step forward for Sam & Nick. A Must Read!

As usual, Marie Force didn't disappoint. I give this a solid 5 stars after having lost sleep over it.

I read this in one sitting and found that I missed the crew. It's just a continuation and update of Sam, Nick, and their friends' lives (the supporting characters).

The love between Sam and Nick is indestructible and one could only pray for something like it. A new set of characters entered the picture and it's very interesting to see how they'll fit in the whole picture.

Not spoiling anything here, but it's as riveting as ever, and that's all I'm going to say.

I knew that I had to read this book on a weekend when I didn't have to put it down to go to work! Wow, this book has everything that I love about this series.

Nick and Sam certainly have a crazy life and it is about to get crazier when Sam crosses lines for two 5 year olds who were in the house when their parents were murdered and the house set on fire. As the race to find the killer unfolds we learn that Gonzo is in trouble. Christina is fed up with things as they are and Elin and Gonzalez's wedding is a week away.

Sam and Nick always in sync are amazing characters who tackle problems head on. They met problems head on and help those who need it. Both Sam and Nick go out on a limb to protect two little children and in so doing it could cost Sam her job.

Ms. Force's characters stay with you and the two five year olds are no different. The parents murder was brutal and heinous and not the way I expected it to turn out although that is true of most of the cases that Sam solves. The crimes are almost never committed by the likely subject. This story had twists and turns and lots of action to keep me glued to my seat with my eyes glued to the pages. Ms. Force draws you in and makes you feel for these characters and what they have to endue. My heart broke for the two children. I felt for Gonzo and Christina as they try to find their way after something I never saw coming happened to them. It's all so realistic and her stories stay with me long after I have finished them. I look forward to what comes next, the good, the bad, the tears and the laughs. That's what a good book is all about. Kudos on another fantastic story in the series! I loved it and didn't put it down until I finished it.
