New York Times bestselling and award-winning writer Marjorie Liu is best known for her fiction and comic books. She teaches comic book writing at MIT, and she leads a class on Popular Fiction at the Voices of Our Nation (VONA) workshop.

Ms. Liu is a highly celebrated comic book writer. Her extensive work with Marvel includes the bestselling Dark Wolverine series, NYX: No Way Home, X-23, and Black Widow: The Name of the Rose. She received national media attention for Astonishing X-Men, which featured the gay wedding of X-Man Northstar and was subsequently nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for outstanding media images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Ms. Liu also wrote the story for the animated film, Avengers Confidential: Black Widow and Punisher, which was produced by Marvel, Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) Inc., and Madhouse Inc.

Her newest work is MONSTRESS, an original, creator-owned comic book series with Japanese artist (and X-23 collaborator) Sana Takeda. Published by Image in Fall 2015, MONSTRESS is set in an alternate, matriarchal 1920’s Asia and follows a girl’s struggle to survive the trauma of war. With a cast of girls and monsters and set against a richly imagined aesthetic of art deco-inflected steam punk, MONSTRESS #1 debuted to critical praise. The Hollywood Reporter remarked that the longer than typical first issue was “world-building on a scale rare in mainstream comics.

Ms. Liu is also the author of more than 19 novels, most notably the urban fantasy series, Hunter Kiss, and the paranormal romance series, Dirk & Steele. Her novels have also been bestsellers on USA Today, which described Liu “as imaginative as she is prolific. Her critically praised fiction has twice received the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award, for THE MORTAL BONE (Hunter Kiss #6), and TIGER EYE (Dirk & Steele #1). TIGER EYE was the basis for a bestselling paranormal romance video game called Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box.

Liu has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, MTV, and been profiled in the Wall Street Journal.com, Hollywood Reporter, and USA Today. She is a frequent lecturer and guest speaker, appearing on panels at San Diego Comic Con, the Tokyo Literary Festival, the New York Times Public Lecture series, Geeks Out; and the Asian American Writers Workshop. Her work has been published internationally, including Germany, France, Japan, Poland, and the United Kingdom.

Ms. Liu was born in Philadelphia, and has lived in numerous cities in the Midwest and Beijing. Prior to writing full-time, she was a lawyer. She currently resides in Boston.

I'm really still on board with this graphic novel. The reveals keep coming and the worldbuilding is still growing. Seeing the Dusk court and the ancient immortals is something else.

The art, as usual, is as fascinating as the story. Now if only we can get over that self-hate...

Well now ... heroes can be found in the unlikliest of places and it's not always those with the biggest guns that are the most powerful ...

Maika has been taken. She's either dead or in a sort of coma - depending on who you believe. We thus finally get to see the Dusk Court. And boy, these ancients are madder than the hatter.
This volume gave answers to Tuya's origins and the reason for her betrayal of Maika as well as a look at Corvin's childhood (with parents like these ...). But we also got to see what REALLY happened to Maika's mother and FINALLY find out what Zinn really is and what happened to him and his kind (sorta).
We're also getting some long overdue (in my opinion) reunions.

There is quite a bit of soul-searching here, literally and figuratively speaking. Muhahahahahahaha. Saying more would be too much of a spoiler though.

The art is as glorious as ever:

And yes, I'm Team Kippa. ;)
More answers to come as we still do not have the complete picture but I'm sure it will be awesome.

Is it just me, or was the artwork particularly amazing in this bind up? There is a lot of set up in this, but I also really appreciated the additional character work and themes explored, and I am READY for Kippa to fully come into her own!

This might be the goriest volume yet. The Devourer really lives up to its title. Lots of devouring, literally and figuratively speaking. The artwork is crazy, Sana Takeda just outdid herself.

I like that we got backstories of Tuya, Corvin, Maika's mom, etc. I like that while Maika was incapacitated, she still fought (though her suffering was a bit too much at this point). I like that despite all the darkness, Kippa remains the relentless pure light that we adore since we first lay eyes on her. So many things happening here even though it is not a battle/full action volume. The Dusk Court really gives me the creep.

Having said that, I think reading an epic fantasy like this when the volumes only come out once a year is really challenging. There is a huge cast and a sprawling worldbuilding (that keeps on building) with complicated plot and subplots so a year in between volumes is not ideal - especially since the time reading one is fewer than an hour. I think at least releasing multiple volumes in closer time period would be better, like three volumes within a span of six months. I rather wait for something like that once every two years or more.

Monstress is a richly designed, excellently drawn, wonderfully written epic fantasy story that happens to be presented in the graphic novel form. The characters grow and change and develop, and we continually learn more about their world, politics, and societies, along with their personal growth and background. The series must be read in order to be fully appreciated, I believe, but it's worth it. It continues to be my favorite series.

Phenomenal. I have always loved this series, but volume 7 is by far my favourite and arguably the most powerful entry to date.

While Maika is still a central character fighting her own mind, much of the story is devoted to the side characters. Each one has a strong moment, particularly Tuya, Kippa, and my favourite, Corvin.

We’re introduced to more elements of the Dusk Court and those working against it. Nothing about this novel is simple, from its themes to its setting to its world and content. This is a grim book. Yet, near the end when the need is most dire, there is a much needed undercurrent of hope.

The world building and introduction of new characters makes this a complex read that requires a lot of attention. Nonetheless, it is a powerful story and worth every high fantasy reader’s time.

And the art style Sana Takeda has always been enormously talented, but in this entry she has truly stepped up her game. It is beautiful in every sense of the word.

I was sad when the book ended because I am desperate for more. There is so much going on, so much to discover, that I can hardly wait for the next entry. One of my favourite reads of 2022 and still my favourite graphic novel series of all time.

Oohhhh mama!! That was good! Perhaps my favourite of the whole series. We get the Baroness’s backstory and what she’s up to and why. We get more backstory in general of the world and the ancients. Everything was so well done. The art is perhaps even better in this instalment which, considering how gorgeous every instalment has been so far, is high praise indeed. I have read some reviews that felt the pacing was not entirely to their liking, but for me, it was just right. Damn though. Ima gonna have to read the whole damn series with the next instalment because the world building is complex and expansive and I’m never going to remember all the intricate details.

5.0 Stars. Volumes 7 collects issues #36-41 of the comic. Over the course of this series my biggest issue has been that the plot is hard to follow at times. Answers have been slow to come. However, this was the first volume where I felt like everything is really starting to come together and I have a good grasp on the material.

When the previous book ended I was worried that it may be a while before the story caught up with her character. However, while those around Maika continue on with their plans she is fighting a very real battle in her mind. She and Zinn are forced to face truths that they had long buried and attempted to forget. I really loved this part of the story and the ideas surrounding acceptance and forgiveness of oneself.

Tuya is starting to make sense. I love how complex her character is. This is not a world of good or bad. Everyone exists in shades of gray. Tuya's life has never really been her own. Learning how she became the Baroness goes a long way in humanizing her. It also goes a long way in explaining why she would betray Maika. It's hard to consider Tuya a villain as much as she is just an unwilling pawn trying to survive.

Sana Takeda deserves every bit of praise she's received for her work on Monstress. The art is consistently excellent and always serves the story well. The level of detail, the lush colors, the textures, the creative use of the panels - the artwork continues to be a highlight of this series.

I think this is my least favourite volume so far. The pacing definitely takes a backseat compared to the previous war-oriented volumes, and much of the storyline is filled with Maika's internal struggles and looks at what other characters were doing during that time. I definitely disliked that, because it feels like a filler volume, and having in mind that this is the seventh year this is story is being published in, I think it's safe to say that maybe it drags on for a bit to long, and that I'm ready to see the final countdown.

The artstyle continues to be utterly astonishing, and these story arcs are where Sana Takeda's skills become completely flawless.

I don’t know whether it’s my usual loss of interest with series, or the fact that graphic novels aren’t my preferred medium, or just the difficulty of reading a graphic novel series in which installments are published a full year apart (that’s a long wait for such a quick read)—especially when it’s epic fantasy, with a big cast overflowing with factions, secrets and double-crosses. But I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I did at the beginning. The art is still gorgeous and there are some big revelations in this one, as well as some major new issues raised. I basically enjoyed it, but I wonder if I should wait till the series is completed to read future volumes.

After the war stories that filled the previous couple of volumes, things slow down a bit to give the plot a bit of breathing room. We finally get introduced to some major players of the Dusk Court, and how they operate. We also have , Maika and Zinn out of commission, but battling inside of their mind to regain consciousness. Kippa reunites with Ren, which was a very nice moment, and finally Tuya seems to be in over her head at this point.

I really appreciate that Marjorie Liu takes the time to slow things down and kind of reset a bit. In all honesty the last volumes were a bit chaotic, and confusing at times. Unfortunately there is a bit of pacing issues with this volume, as things transition from Maika's mind to the real world quite often and quite jarringly.

The art however is back to the top notch level it was before the war volumes. It was awesome to see Sana Takeda back to full form, as the war volumes were much messier and seemed rushed - in terms of art. Here we have the beautiful pattern work that she has displayed in past volumes in full effect again, and the book looks great for it.

I'm still onboard with this book, but the plot seems to be meandering a tiny bit. Let's see what the next volume holds for the Maika, Kippa and the rest of the crew.

Bullet Review:

I don't know how the creators manage to continue to make this series so interesting. This volume was very much more introspective, not much "forward momentum", but we get great insight into the Baroness' background as well as the Ancients.

The only problem is remembering what happened next year when I finally get my hands on the next volume.

Brutális erejű a vizualitás, érdekfeszítő, fordulatos a történetvezetés.

This series is such a hot mess, like a a Raymond E Feist novel brought to life (with less racism obvs). Like is Maika ok? What's up with Tuya/Baronness, can someone remind me who the Arcanics vs Ancients are? Where did they get zeppelins from, why is the child eater there? Thought all the Illium witches were dead? WHO ARE ALL THESE NEW CHARACTERS.

BUT I keep coming back because it's incredibly compelling, all the the lead characters are women and are awful and flawed and wonderful and I keep reading this this exact reason. Queer, diverse it's great. The Ctulhu vibes are excellent and I can't wait to see what's in store for Kippa. More seriously though - there was only one excerpt from Professor Tam Tam and honestly, he's the real MVP of the series giving us real time info).

04/20/2024: Reread to refresh my memory prior to reading Vol. 8, Inferno

07/14/2023: Maika's relationships with others are explored in depth and we learn her past history, some of it previously unknown to Maika: There's Zinn; the Lord Doctor; Tuya; Corvin; Kippa; Moriko Halfwolf and others. All want to harness Maika's abilities for their own side. There is a character who has been mentioned in passing in previous novels, and she seems to be moving more into the forefront. The violence is mostly depicted in the graphic art, although the dialogue brings it to the forefront. As in the last few volumes, Devourer ends with a cliffhanger. I'm curious to find out what happens next to Maika and friends. But that's another years' wait!

More accurate rating: 8.5/10-9/10.

Much needed progression in the world-building/deep lore, new sites, character backstories, strong imagery and emotionally impactful moments centred on found family, trauma, sacrifice and loyalty.

Given the richness, or density, of this comic series, and given it is, well, a comic book series which means each volume can be consumed in a short couple of hours however, having to wait a year for each new bind-up is really becoming an issue for me. I'm strongly tempted to just temporarily DNF the series until it's completed and then just binge-read the entirety of it. 🤔

It has been a long time since I have read an entire volume of anything in one sitting. I'm puzzled how this illustrator and author can find new ways for me to empathize, cheer, or hate the characters I thought I knew well. The characters, world building and lore of this world continues to expand in interesting and new ways. I now have to patiently wait for a new volume after I have fallen in love with this world even harder then when it first started.

As the poets say, please let this comic have many, many issues.

Not so much all-out war this time, but still plenty of darkness and betrayal, and a reminder that this is a world where characters being small and cute doesn't preclude their being incredibly dangerous too - not even in the case of the dear little fox. There's lots on the damage that parents and children can do to each other, and some particularly impressive splashes of impossible machinery and fantastic vistas. Even a glimpse of the old gods' world before they fell, when they were less things of terror than "an intention of light".

4.5* rounded down to 4* (only because the scope was limited by the shorter volume) - More of the past unfolds, and the action slows down a bit allowing me to feel more grounded in the story. Politics, strategy, secrets, and betrayals continue to swirl around in beautifully crafted scenes, so even though this was a shorter volume, it still had the same impact on me. I'm totally hooked...

Shelving this under horror because the amount of body horror and mental turmoil is through the roof. I honestly loooooved all of it; so much is happening, please pleaseeee let it mean that we are steamrolling towards climaxes and conclusions! Add on top of it Sana Takeda's art yassifying all said horror.

This series has a very neat fantasy/horror/steampunk world with lots of interesting characters. Kippa is my absolute favorite, though. This series has been both interesting and bewildering. It's so dense, and there are so many different characters with different motives, all at odds with each other. I may not always understand fully what's going on, but I have to keep reading to see what happens next.

What a series! The illustrations are beyond anything I've ever seen - engrossing and yet gentle. This edition finds us in the mind of the unconscious heroine, Maika, while she battles within and they battle without, around her, trying to get what power she has within. It's quite a story and I'm loving it.
