Jayson’s Reviews > Monstress, Volume 7: Devourer > Status Update

Jayson
Jayson is starting

Notes:
(1) So, there's still an outside chance I can finish this series before the month is over. Depends on whether I need breaks between volumes, or even issues.
- It may just be me, but I find this series exhausting.
(2) I still have no idea what Tuya's deal is. She's royalty, so how did she get sold into slavery? How did she get out of it? What's her problem with Maika?

Notes:
(1) For the most part this volume has been an oasis of clarity (relatively speaking), though these last few issues have veered back into familiar, muddier waters.
- It's still not clear to me who's plotting/fighting against who and why.
(2) Kippa and Ren together continue to be highlights of the series.
- They're the series' most independently interesting characters.

Notes:
(1) We're in the phase of the story where the war is pretty much over (at least I think so) and everyone's in recovery mode. The plot's just characters discussing the aftermath.
- So, in the absence of action, it's all about answering questions and filling in backstory.
- Things are so much easier to follow now! I don't know why we didn't go into clarity mode sooner.

Notes:
(1) Issue #37 isn't a dream sequence but it's treated like one. Maika and Zinn go all "Ghost of Christmas Past" and get a third-person view of their major life events.
- I suppose it's an afterlife, but shouldn't life flashing before your eyes happen before death?
- I usually hate dream sequences but this answers very critical questions "Harry Potter" Pensieve style.
