This didn't necessarily blow me away or anything, but I really enjoyed it a lot.

I am loving this series as a whole.
I mean, how can you not, right?
I adore Eve and Roarke.

description

Seriously, I am ROARKE'D beyond all recognition.

description

This installment had more awesome to offer...

Interesting plot, as always.
Fast paced and well written, as always.
Great interactions between Eve and Roarke, as always.

Eve is fast becoming one of my most favorite heroines.

description

She had a huge breakthrough of sorts in this book and that was exciting to read.

description

I also love how we just keep getting to know Eve/Roarke and all the recurring side characters better and better with every book.

I have high hopes for Eve and Sommerset! lol

My only complaint?

The ending.

They always feel kind of abrupt.

And this one ended right before , which I would have liked to have "seen."

Hoping that gets covered in the next book, but I feel doubtful.

Looking forward to more Eve and Roarke. On to the next...

Re Read April 2023

4.25 lieutenant stars!

Another hit from Eve/Roarke!

What more can I say that hasn’t t been said already about this awesome series, expect that as the other previous two books I loved it.

Loved the mystery, the drama, the new characters, but most of all the dynamic that is eve/Rourke. They’re are what makes this series so different, so special, at least for me. Two people that are so differently socially, at the same time similar in their painful past but are so strong in their convictions for justice. Each book I read I see their love grow more and more. They are more than “I love you’s it’s in the little things Roarke does for Eve and in the trust Eve has for him.

Reading the previous books we know Eve had a really traumatic childhood we got bits of it. But with this one we finally get the whole picture and dam it was so hard to read. I had to stop for a moment and just take a deep breath. Honestly as heartbreaking as it was it made me love Eve more. I have a feeling will get more from her past.

The last chapter was as perfect as Eve/Roarke can get in their chaotic lives and will see what else they bring.˥️

With Eve and Roarke’s wedding looming, Eve’s nerves were jittering and having her wedding dress made by one of Mavis friends who was a designer was up there with something she would have to force herself to attend. But she would. When a connection to that designer was found brutally murdered with all fingers pointing at a friend of Eve’s, she was understandably distraught. But she also knew she would find the answers and quickly

When the investigation led into the world of illegal drugs and the obsession of youth; of immortality, Eve found herself in the underworld of New York and danger. Would she find the answers to clear her dearest friend? And would her wedding go ahead?

Immortal in Death is #3 in the In Death series and a re-read for me and just as good as the first time! Loved getting to know Peabody as she started her time with Eve; love the wit and sarcastic humour, the vulnerability of Eve everything! A brilliant series which I’m enjoying all over again! Highly recommended.

Once again, I loved reading this book! Every character is well-developed. None of them are faultless, except maybe The House. Ahh, the House. Every book gives more to love. The gymnasium. Wow! Wonder what an aqua-track is?

Reread...again March 2018

I’m pretty sure I read once that Nora Roberts had planned on ending the Eve Dallas books as her usual trilogy. Thankfully she didn’t. This series is always on my go-to selection when I want to revisit my favorite books. Watching her characters grow is such a gift!

Eve Dallas and boyfriend Roarke have finally set a date. One of Eve’s friends is helping with the wedding plans. But when a top model (and one of friend Mavis’s rivals) turns up dead, she becomes a suspect and Eve has to find the real killer, especially after it’s linked back to a series of killings. I love this series more with every book. Great police procedural, and wonderful development of characters and side characters, who pop up from one book to another.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I feel compelled to give this pivotal book (#3 in the "In Death" series) no less than 5 stars as....

Firstly and monumentally…..
"Getting married was murder. Eve wasn’t sure how it had happened in the first place. She was a cop, for God’s sake. Throughout her ten years on the force, she’d firmly believed cops should stay single, unencumbered, and focused utterly on the job. It was insane to believe one person could split time, energy, and emotion between law, with all its rights and wrongs, and family, with all its demands and personalities." ..

Oh Eve, so fortunate that at least one of you is a romantic.....sigh, that would be Roarke!!.💘

He caught her chin in his hand. “I’m hopelessly in love with you. There he was. This man with the sinfully blue eyes, the strong, gorgeous, somehow Raphaelite looks of a doomed angel, loved her. ..

Secondly Eve is finally able to confront her abusive past through her dreams(nightmares really).....
.
“Eve, as horrible as those eight years were, and as obscene, they formed you. They helped build your strength, your compassion for the innocent, your complexity, your resilience. Remembering, and dealing with those memories, won’t change what you are."(Dr. Mira and Eve).

and if that isn't enough reasons, I also really enjoyed that in this book Eve finds herself having to step up and defend her best friend Mavis when she is set up as a murder suspect. It made for a great classic mystery.
🔫💊🔫💊🔫
I am really becoming close to these characters: Eve and Roarke, Peabody, Feeney, Dr. Mira, Summerset, Mavis and Nadine Furst.(almost like extended family)
I might sound like a broken record after I read a few more of these books but for all lovers of Romantic suspense you have to checkout this series because it is AWESOME !!!!!😎

Finally to Karla and Hulya thanks for all your wonderful words of encouragement as I discovered my love of this excellent series and I am happy that we can share these book experiences together.

This is the third book in the In Death series and once again J.D. Robb does not disappoint her readers.
Eve and Roarke’s wedding day is fast approaching and Eve’s nerves are a little on edge and she is investigating the murder of a top fashion model. What Eve wasn’t expecting was that one of the suspects to be someone close to her. With her wedding just around the corner, Eve was uncertain if the wedding would go ahead. Eve now had to work even harder on her latest case knowing that her friend had somehow become involved or was this a mistake and if so who did kill the latest victim?

I am truly loving this series and every time I finish a book I want to pick up the next one straight away. Mystery, intrigue, page turner, and romance, this book has it all. Looking for a new series to get your teeth into then look no further. Highly recommended.

Rereading this series and loving it even more the second time around.

This mystery stumped me! I love the deepening relationship between Eve and Roarke.

Top models and illegal (and unknown) substances. Will we ever learn that trying to defeat nature never works? Do I enjoy that Roarke was such a slut and slept with all these models before meeting Eve? Kinda. But he’s so ALL IN with her that it doesn’t overly grate on the nerves.

I love seeing more of Feeney, and Peabody makes an entrance. I’d forgotten how wonderful the beginning of her working relationship with Eve is. The start of Mavis and Leonardo, sigh, these two are so good for one another.

Eve begins to remember her childhood, and opens up to Mira. Summerset is still an ass, but catches Eve after a nightmare and it floors him. It brings back all those memories of the daughter he lost.

Planning the wedding is hilarious, that scene at the flower shop. LOL!

More love!

Of the three I have read so far Immortal In Death is the one I love the most. Things between Eve and Roarked changed in such a raw yet endearing way. Eve laid herself bare at Roarkes feet and it broke my heart to listen to her tell her dark story. Pieces had been revealed but in the moment where she let it all out I was moved.

Roarke had sat quietly fighting his anger for what she went through and just listened. With just a gentle touch from him Eve knew she had finally made it out of the dark. He would absorb her pain and simply love her. I have said it before but it is worth repeating. I love how he loves her. And here is thing. Don’t mistake him for being a sappy guy. He is dangerous and fierce.

Things hit close to home when Eve is faced again with a murder. There are few that she considers family so when her girlfriend Mavis is named one of the prime suspect Eve finds it hard staying within the lines. Drugs and immortality is something that runs wild within the circles of high fashion and the glamorous people who live within it. Someone is willing to kill for it.

This author continues to do a great job with slowly building who Eve and Roarke are individually and together. And she continues to add additional side characters that are weaved into the story so that you know they will be sticking around for a while. Leonardo and Peabody are the two that grew on me in this one. Feeney, Mavis, Summerset and the Commander continue to shine. I’m beginning to see another side of Summerset and I am intrigued.

I quite enjoyed this one and yes I have moved on to book 4. With the way that J.D. Robb left things, I needed to have that next moment with Eve and Roarke.

In the future, people will kill each other over drugs! Weird, huh?
Also in the future, women in authority will be called "sir" as a sign that they are now equal to men. I've read this in a couple of different books now and I just have to wonder something. Why is a woman shown to be equal to a man by calling her a term of respect meant for a man? Is it because calling her "maam" would denote a lower position? The female equivalent to the same word is somehow less? My Feminist Senses are tingling. Feminist Senses are like Spidey Senses, but they originate in the uterus and make me a bit crankier and wanting chocolate.

hum, where exactly do the Spidey Senses originate?

So, in this book Eve is trying to solve some murders that seem to have a link in a new drug. Her bestie, Mavis, is a suspect and so Eve is going all out to clear her. That's what besties are for, afterall. Helping to clear your name, helping you hide the body. Same thing.

I have a shovel, girls... just sayin'

Along with trying to solve the murders, Eve is planning her wedding. Well, kind of. She really hates wedding stuff. When Mavis, who has blue hair this week and rarely dresses in much more than gemstones, decides to hook Eve up with a designer to make her a wedding dress, Roarke gets a little worried.

"She has this friend. He's a designer."

"Let's elope. Now. You look fine."

Her grin flashed. "Scared?"

"Terrified."

"Good, now we're even."

"You won't do anything ridiculous, will you?"

"I'm getting married. What can be more ridiculous than that?"

Eve is saltier than the Dead Sea... and I like it!

This book was definitely the best one so far. All of the reoccurring side characters are developing nicely and of course I love Roarke. I am even starting to see why he loves Eve so much.

Roarke winked at Mavis and called after Eve as she stormed away, "What about your crepe?"

"Stuff it."

"She's crazy about you," Mavis commented.

"It's almost embarrassing, the way she fawns..."

I think I'm falling for Eve myself!

Beauty and Youth are Desperate Matters for Some . . .

Immortal In Death is the third book in J.D. Robb’s In Death series. Even though this story takes place in 2058, it’s one that even today we read about in any newspaper on any given day, or watch on prime time news: Drugs. They make you feel good. Make you feel young. Make you think you’re immortal.

Cover Blurb...
She was one of the most sought after women in the world. A top model who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted - even another woman's man. And now she was dead, the victim of a brutal murder. And, well...

I’ve run out of words to use to express how much I love this series, so at the risk of repeating myself, I’ll repeat myself: The books are Intriguing, exciting, captivating, sexy absolutely incredible!

I've noticed a formula for the In Death books and noticing this formula has dimmed my enjoyment.

1. Eve gets a murder case
2. Mavis does something cute and funny to cheer her up
3. Another person dies and adds the the case
4. Roarke does something romantic. This may or may not follow Summerset sassing Eve.
5. One more corpse, just for good measure.
6. Roarke does something illegal to help Eve, with a charming grin of course.
7. Everything's coming together now. This is totally the bad guy.
8. Hmmm, something's a bit off.
9. Though she's purportedly "the best" Roarke figures the case out before she does and just in the nick of time to rescue her from the actual bad guy, who holds off on killing her so he can describe his nefarious deeds in detail.

I really like all the secondary characters, as they have rich and unique personalities, but the plots are a bit too predictable so far.

One more book, and I'll decided if I quit or stick with the series.

These keep getting better, even though I completely guessed who the "bad guy" was again (I only point this out because I am the type of reader who usually doesn't figure it out, so if I manage it the book's hints were particularly unsubtle). The back story of Eve's childhood was shocking! Looking forward to the next book :)

Suspense 4.5 stars / Romance 4 stars

I admire Eve’s (= author’s) sharp mind. Damn, it was intense.

Eve is a star, no doubt. Love her.

And I start to like Roarke, very slow, but nevertheless.
I hope no his ex-lovers would be killed in the next book; 1 ex dead in the 2nd book and 1 ex dead in this book. Playboy trope wouldn’t be appreciated.

But I liked that he was jealous.

Yep, Eve is the best, man, watch out!

Okay. So. I'm trying to get into this the way that so many others seem to have gotten into it, but it just has a certain vibe to it. Not a bad vibe, but an AVERAGE vibe. The mysteries aren't anything special. We get similar police procedurals on tv anywhere you look. The romance isn't special. It's wish-fulfillment on a grand scale: a perfect bad rich boy who is absolutely one dimensional in his love for the emotionally damaged police heroine.

We aren't really supposed to ask why. You know. Chemistry, et al.

So what is this book really about? Wedding preparations and saving a friend from a murder rap. And more wedding preparations than saving her friend from a murder rap. And hot sex. And more wedding preparations.

Hmmm okay.

The SF in this is on par with a plopping in a random Star Wars droid and making the MC make a snide comment the way Harrison Ford was likely to do. Other than that, I can't really say this IS SF at all.

I'm not feeling it. I mean, sure, if all I wanted was a lightly decorated HEA among a few dead bodies and easy mysteries, then this is probably right up my alley. But really, it feels like it could be a straight-on cookie cutter from here on out.

Please, someone, tell me I'm wrong and I may continue on.

Immortal in Death by J.D. Robb

Synopsis /

'She'd come to New York to be a cop, because she believed in order. Needed it to survive. She had taken control, had made herself into the person some anonymous social worker had named Eve Dallas'.

But in a few weeks she won't just be Eve Dallas, lieutenant, homicide. She'll be Roarke's wife. But Eve's wedding plans may have to be put on hold as her private and professional lives collide... The victim in her latest murder investigation is one of the most sought-after women in the world. A top model who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted - even another woman's man. And Eve's chief suspect is the other woman in this fatal love triangle - her best friend Mavis. Putting her job on the line to head the investigation, Eve discovers that the world of high fashion thrives on an all-consuming passion for youth and fame. One that leads from the runway to the dark underworld of New York City where drugs can fulfil any desire - for a price . . .

My Thoughts /

Be careful what you wish for..immortality can be deadly.

is book #3 in what is, a mammoth series; with book #61, Framed in Death, expected to be released in Sept 2025, the In Death series is the longest series I've started to date. Who said I was scared of commitment !!!! 😆

Featuring protagonist, Eve Dallas, this futuristic romantic suspense series is set in New York City in 2058.

In this instalment, New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is not only fighting the latest in a never ending array of cases, but she now has to deal with the seemingly endless amount of decision making regarding her upcoming marriage to the Irish ultra bazillionaire who owns her heart - Roarke. Dallas loves Roarke, but please [Eve wishes] for the love of God, can someone else do the organising!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👰‍♀

As if Eve's not stressed out enough; her best friend the wildly crazy yet totally lovable Mavis Freestone becomes the number one suspect in a murder investigation. When the body of Pandora THE most famous supermodel on (and off) the planet is found dead in a fashion designer's apartment, Mavis' prints are found ALL over the crime scene. To make matters more complicated (when is murder ever simple?) both Mavis (the current flame) and Pandora (the EX) had a very heated and very public confrontation over said designer, Leonardo. Turns out Pandora didn't take kindly to being replaced by Mavis matters of the heart can get extremely messy! But murder????

Dallas knows her best friend is not capable of murder, and yet, all evidence seems to be saying something different.

The upcoming wedding, and now, the added stress of clearing Mavis from a murder charge has Dallas' nerves on the verge of breaking.

One of the things I like about this series is the setting. Our author has a terrific talent for worldbuilding. In Robb's NYC in 2058; vehicles have the ability to become airborne, food comes out of an automated machine, you can't get 'real' coffee (unless you're a multi-billionaire), there's no butter, and meat(?) only the ridiculously wealthy can afford the real thing. Robb's fictional setting is not about countries anymore, but about planets she talks extensively about 'on' and 'off' planet. One thing that hasn't changed though are criminals they seem to be as greedy and manipulative, as crooked and villainous as ever.

The author combines great character development with a bang-for-your-buck storyline; plot twists and red herrings; plenty of inter-departmental clashes; sprinkled ever so slightly with a light romance element and some very witty banter and humour.

I've got a long way to go to get before I reach the end of this series, but it looks as though it's going to be a fun ride.

This is my second reading but my first reviewing of this totally enjoyable book! I believe this was originally intended to be the last book in a trilogy and it certainly seems like that. So much happens in its 345 pages and it does round off very neatly with all ends tied up. There is a lot of personal drama for Eve and a lot of work action in the form of homicides. Luckily for us all decided to develop the series further and we all know how far it has gone. May it go on for much longer yet!

Always good...

I have a very bad habit of forgetting about this series. I listen to one instalment, love it, then end up having a six-month break in-between. Considering how many books are in this series, I'll be listening to them for the rest of my life. Not a bad thing, really. Luckily, it's very easy to pick up and follow along without needing to revisit previous books.

You really can't go wrong with this series. The characters are lovable in their own special way and the storyline is always captivating. The cases Eve handles are always interesting and I love 'watching' them play out. There are a couple of scenes that had me teary and for readers who are sensitive to scenes with child abuse, it is best to go in warned that there are some.

I will be back for more Eve and Roarke...soon...ish.

Since I started reading books written by this author whether as Nora Roberts or J.D Robb I can't recall ever reading a story that I didn't like!
I was reluctant to start the In Death series but once I started I enjoyed every one of the installments so far!

I love Eve and her relationships with Roarke, Mavis and her colleagues! I like how she is seemingly hard but cares deeply!
The passion between her and Roarke but also the deep feelings between them and the teasing that brings out a funny side is the delightful part of the series!

In Immortal in death Eve is involved in a case that brings her into the world of fashion and it's personal since her best friend is number one suspect! Outside work she is preparing for her wedding and remembers something devastating about her past!

Intriguing, emotional, funny, passionate Immortal in Death was a great read for me!

4.67 "Arrest me in the morning" stars

Because why not get specific? If I want to be able to review and distinguish all 40+ books in the series, I may as well rate them uniquely.

So far, Glory In Death is my favorite book of the series. The reason is simple: Eve's personal life was tightly interwoven with the case.

I'm not going to say more lest I spoil something. Only maybe that, even though I'd lightly suspected the person who eventually turned out to be the murderer, it was still a surprise. Conversely to "Immortal In Death" (book two) there weren't as many suspects, which heightened the frustration since Eve was hoping for more to turn out, but also made it more interesting, IMO, because I was always shifting between: "It must be him... no, definitely her... maybe they did it together?"

Her relationship with Roarke keeps on growing and, in this installment, I'd say we see a lighter aspect of it. There isn't major angst concerning their relationship, but some of their scenes were hilarious, swoony and downright romantic. That man is pure gold! First and foremost, he holds dear Eve's well-being, even when she doesn't give a flying crap about it.

“I doubt this will diminish your authority, he murmured, then pressed his lips softly to hers. “I love you.
“Yeah, well. She cleared her throat. “Okay.
“PDZٰ.

I love their dynamics because even though Eve loves Roarke, she has issues expressing it and coming to terms with the fact that someone like him could love her back. Roarke is the main chaser in the relationship, and, with her doubts and his certainty, they remind me a lot of Cat and Bones from the Night Huntress series.

“Sorry I blubbered on you.
“I’m always available for blubbering. He came toward her with a steaming omelette and a cup. He sat down, stared into her swollen, exhausted eyes. “I adore you.
She flushed. It seemed he was the only one who could bring embarrassed color to her cheeks. “You’re trying to distract me. She took the plate and a fork. “That kind of stuff always does, and I can never get my tongue around what I should say back. She sampled the eggs. “Maybe something like you’re the best thing that ever happened to me.
“That’ll do.

There's instead a major turning point in Eve's life, and although I would have expected it to be revealed further in the series, to see how Roarke stood by her side and fought for their happiness made me want to slow clap and to kiss him. Well, everything he does makes me want to smooch him but that scene particularly so.

"I won’t let you go, Eve. If you didn’t love me or want me or need me, I would have to. But you do love me and want me. And though you still have difficulty with the concept, you need me.

Re-read/listened to the audiobook version Jan'19

Original read/review:

5 stars Romantic Suspense

This is another thrilling addition to the addictive In Death series. Eve finds herself juggling wedding plans with a high stakes, complex murder investigation of a top model involving a new, lethal drug; and this time around, solving the murder is intensely personal, since it means clearing her best friend, Mavis, who is the prime suspect. Eve and Roarke's love deepens as they prepare to exchange vows, but Eve's remembrance of traumatic events from her past test their bond. There's a big twist that took me completely by surprise and honestly left me a bit bummed, especially for Peabody, who I hope gets paired with someone else in the future. It's another great read in an amazing series that's worthy of 5 stars!
