Originally published in 1938, Rebecca is known to be a quintessential, timeless gothic literature masterpiece. What surprised me about it was how modern it seemed, how it wasn't a romance at all. At its core, Rebecca is a psychological suspense novel, a slow burning mystery with an eerie, ominous tone. It's a ghost story. Completely unique and fun for it's time with the domestic noir element to it. The easy writing style counteracted by the rich, vivid detail is something stunning to behold... y

this was... interesting. It felt like two separate books to be honest, the first half being a slow building romance turning abusive, the second becoming a slow burn thriller mystery. But both felt slow, not in a bad way, more like a strange suspense I can't quite put my finger on. But I would say, du Marier's writing is amazing.

The story of Rebecca is emotionally charging in that the narrator is telling the story through the eyes of jealous love, this jealous love not only captured the narrator but three other characters over Rebecca. This gothic romance, mystery and death telling is supremely delivered to the unknowing reader. There is never a moment of breath in calmness until the very last sentence of the story. A must read classic that keeps you spinning the story line in your head days after.

A solid 4 stars
This book is really good. It’s like a mix of Agatha Christie, F Scott Fitzgerald and Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre.
Also, stellar opening line.
Also, also, Danvers creeped me the eff out and The New Mrs. De Winters might be a little crazy or dark herself.
Totally recommend this, and all of Du Maurier’s books, ESPECIALLY Jamaica Inn.
