It's weird. Often it feels like the characters are performing to camera, which makes you too aware of the fourth wall.

It gets more engaging later, even if the overall thing is a workout for your suspension of disbelief.

My eyes kind of glazed over when they were explicating on background and history and whatever and whatnot.

The grammar could use some love. Comma splices, odd turns of phrase, sentences that no matter how I read them, feel like they should be questions (and are missing commas)...

I really wanted to like this story. But I think my expectations were just too high? I liked the writing and I was all for the world building and the direction the plot seemed to be going, but somehow I wasn't able to get into it. Which sucks because this came to me recommended and I had another two people hoping I would enjoy this as they did. I really enjoyed this read. One of my favorite books is War for the Oaksand this is the first successive book I've read that pleasantly reminds me of that story where I was first introduced to phoukas (dogs). Here the Kitsune (foxes), Coyotes, and Phoukas live among us but humans are unable to see them for what they truly are.
Our protagonist finds out, when he turns 18, that he is half-Coyote. Throughout the story he discovers what powers he has, most of these being involved with trickery. His

Excellent world building. Fun characters and a plot convoluted enough to keep any reader of Urban Fantasy interested. Spencer's a hero with all the issues you'd expect from any UF hero, but he spends maybe 10% of the book brooding over it, 90% of the time it's all action and getting shit done.

It's so good to finally have a slash UF that's plot focused rather than romance focused. And the uh, age diff between Main Character and Love Interest didn't hurt either.
