Emma Farris asked Laini Taylor:

Did you always know how Akiva and Karou's relationship would end, or did it change during your writing process? I'm writing a paper on how authors use chemistry between characters and need an example. Ever since I picked up Daughter of Smoke and Bone Akiva and Karou have always been one of my favorites. P.S. Currently reading Dreams of Gods and Monsters...LOVE IT<3

Laini Taylor Hi E-Claire :-) Thanks for the question!! Did I always know how Akiva & Karou would end up? I knew while I was writing DoSaB how I wanted book 1 to end, and I knew how I wanted the overall story ultimately to end. But I didn't know how I would get there, or what would have to happen along the way to "earn" that ending. So it was always a possibility that it wouldn't work out and feel genuine and believable. Generally, that's how I write: I have a sense of where I want to end up, but don't know how I'm going to get there, and have to explore all these pathways of possibility in the middle of the story, hoping to forge a path through to the ending I'm hoping for. But inevitably I discover a lot of unexpected stuff along the way, so things change.
