Should I read it? I read a review that said it was confusing. I've wanted to read it, for a while...but never knew if I should of.

Heather If you haven't already watch the movie first. I did and it really helped me to understand what was going on in the book much better.
I've always heard, "Read the book first then watch the movie." I find it much easier and less frustrating to do it in reverse. Not only do I understand the book more but I'm able to watch the movie and not complain about how they skipped this or they left that out. I can watch the movie and enjoy it as intended instead of nitpicking it apart.
Book is great and yes you should read it.

Sasha If you do not read this, or have no interest, you are going to live an incomplete life, without any knowledge of Divergent. So go to the library, get THE MOVIE, watch and enjoy it, and then read all of the books, picture the characters like they are in the movie, and then, you are going to find yourself at Barnes & Noble getting the whole set plus Four. Avneet Kaur Hell, yeah!! This book is so great, that I have some chapters memorized. You really need to read it. It's actually not that confusing. The book captures the essence of a mystical sort-of environment, and I just loved it. It's brilliant. I TOTALLY recommend this book even if the cover is not appealing. I'm not the sort of person who reads these types of books (Hunger Games, Harry Potter, etc.) and I still picked up this book and couldn't put it down until it was done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kianna Well, the books not confusing, more of a harder read if you wanna put it that way. In the began you have absolutely no clue what is going on. There is no explanation and you connately wonder what is going on. However the story is good once you get it. Then again, I have a problem with perfect people, and i felt thats how all the people of the book were. and don't even get me started on the ending of the series. it was absolutely terrible. read it if you want, but i wouldn't recommend it

Lisa I did not find it at all confusing. Things happened in the natural order, it was easy to follow, and there were very few character flashbacks. I would recommend it.

kristina Best fiction book I have read and it made me love reading. Sounds stupid, but the book is a BILLION times better than the film. READ the book FIRST!!! Trust me... I prefer watching movies way more than reading (I mean WAY more), but this book stunned me when I compared it to the film.

Madison This book was amazing! It's on my top ten favorites for sure!! I couldn't put it down from the first chapter to the last word. It's not too confusing of a book, but I do think there are a couple chapters I did read twice just to fully understand them, but being the person I am, I do try to read very deep into my books and see any little "secrets" that could be in it! Overall it's a great book and a must read for everyone!

Leia Barko YES! It's not confusing at all, I don't know why some people say that it is. Besides the Hunger Games, it is my favorite book series.

Sophie House Divergent is about choosing and finding out who you are. The main character is stuck in a flawed world where she feels like she doesn't belong. She has to choose between leaving her family and finding happiness or staying, and growing in a world that she doesn't want. Her whole life has been about helping others and never thinking of herself, but that's not who she is. She finds that it's so easy for everyone else around her, but it's not in her nature. Her choice can only be made by her, no one can tell her what to choose, but they can tell her what she should. When the day finally comes to make her choice she is pressured to stay with the ones she loved, but after a turn of events, she finally makes a choice for herself.

Chloe Billman The book was way more in depth than the movie, which I love! The movie left some things out though, but it helps you gain a better understanding of the book. When reading the book, you allow your mind to conjure up the images in your head of what's happening and of what people look like, but when you watch the movie, you know what people look like, but you don't really get much indepth of people's personalities. Personally, I would read the book first, and then watch the movie, but you can do whatever you want! Lastly, all books explore more in depth than movies and you appreciate a deeper sense of understanding for it.

This answer contains spoilersâ€� (view spoiler)[The book Divergent by Veronica Roth narrates the story of an alternate society heavily established on the idea of separate factions to prevent warfares and chaos. People would get appointed to 4 different factions based on their ability and mentality. However, it is evident that this system of regulation does not prove to be successful in truly enhancing the quality of peopleâ€™s lives. As you read about the journey of a girl named Tris who transferred from a faction to another, there are many moments where there are obvious hostility and resentment between factions and even within a faction. A theme the book is probably trying to suggest is that a personâ€™s innate characteristics and personalities should not be categorized and controlled by an authoritarian government. One reason is because this system of regulation is inhumane. In the early parts of the book Veronica described the day of the test that would determine which faction would best fit Tris. Veronica talked about how â€œFaction customs dictate even idle behavior and supersede individual preference.â€� And another part saying, â€œWhat if they tell me that Iâ€™m not cut out for any faction? I would have to live on the streets, with the factionless. I canâ€™t do that. To live factionless is not just to live in poverty and discomfort, it is to live divorced from society, separated from the most important thing in life, community. My mother told me once that we canâ€™t survive alone, but even if we could, we wouldnâ€™t want to. Without a faction, we have no purpose and no reason to live.â€� This is an example of how stringent the factions are about the way people act. When the government goes further into regulating our behaviors â€� it is clear that itâ€™s time for a change. To have everybodyâ€™s individuality completely altered to oneâ€™s wish basically means that they are dehumanizing the people, turning them into machines to contribute to the society for maximum proficiency â€� when the advancement of civilization requires distinctive and unique minds to promote reformation. It already seems so deeply ingrained in their culture of integration that they can talk about these things in a completely casual manner, like it is completely ordinary. This harsh way of living seems very inhumane. It would be hard to imagine living in this condition where the government dictates your every move like a puppet in their palms, which only seems more detrimental. Another major issue the book brings up about the segregation technique is how when people go through the initiation process that are often way too precarious, as apparent when Veronica said in the book, â€œWe do dangerous things and people die. People die, and we move on to the next dangerous thing. The sooner that lesson sinks in, the better chance I have at surviving initiationâ€�. When Tris was going through the initiation to become a Dauntless, the task was rather dangerous, requiring them to leap onto a rooftop while on a high-speed train. A few were so scared that they stayed on â€� one even died when trying to get to the rooftop. The people who stayed behind would become factionless which many people, such as Tris, think is a punishment worse than death. This was clear when, as the initiates were about to jump off the train as part of their initiation, Tris thought, â€œI donâ€™t agree with him. I would rather be dead than empty, like the factionless.â€� This is an example of how harsh and often perilous the task are for going into the factions, with no way of turning back or flexible adjustments; it is often overwhelming for those who switch factions midway. People like the Erudite spent their whole life specializing in gathering as much knowledge as they can (to become astute and insightful people for dealing with cognitive thinking) suddenly gets faced with cruel physical challenges (such as when they were placed with the other natural born Dauntlesses who had physically trained themselves all these years), to determine the absurdly small percentage of people that would get to join the Dauntless â€� with the others facing the penalty of becoming a factionless. This would mean that all the other factions would have to try much harder to get placed in the top ten after the grueling initiation process. Furthermore, the newcomers would not know anything about the initiation procedure and they are not even allowed to prepare for it, which practically makes it impossible for them to pass. When the Erudite boy stays behind on the train â€� he would be left with virtually nothing and no future â€� when he couldâ€™ve been contributing so much to the society with his inherent expertise. The factions feel way too restrictive in their selection process; sometimes people with lots of capabilities get thrown into the dirt just because they donâ€™t fit in the few categories that are acceptable in this society. The factions create too little opportunities and prevent people from reaching their full potential. I acknowledge that people may argue that the other factions are probably not as cruel as the Dauntless, especially when this specific faction is portrayed as being physically and mentally demanding. But I believe that even the Dauntless has crossed the line, as it was mentioned in the middle of the book, â€œThatâ€™s what the Dauntless are supposed to do, right? Thatâ€™s what courage is. Not â€� hurting people for no reason. I remember what Four told me, that teamwork used to be a Dauntless priority. What would I have learned if I had been here when my mother was Dauntless? Maybe I wouldnâ€™t have broken Mollyâ€™s nose. or threatened Willâ€™s sister.â€� This not only implies that the Dauntless is in a very conflicted state, but that if the Dauntless factionâ€™s customs can fluctuate like this; other factions would probably be vulnerable to debilitation; therefore, there are still some evidence provided about the status of other factions. Even if this system was acceptable to civil standards before, it seems to be falling far from it now; this slow phase of corruption insinuates towards the factionsâ€� instability. It is completely immoral to strictly control peopleâ€™s every action and shape their personality to meet certain expectations. Personality is boundless and innumerable; a personâ€™s trait is always unique in some way. It is unethical to forcefully modify a personâ€™s disposition to fulfill the needs of the community. Instead, people should focus on rehabilitating only those who cause harm to others, and not having a system of factions with definite personalities and characteristics to uphold order and safety. Nurni (Leave What's Heavy Behind) Read it, it's amazing. Lots of people hate on it and say the writing's bad and that it's a rip off the hunger games but that's not true at all. And even if you don't like it at first, just keep going , you'll get addicted. I wasn't into or used to dystopian but reading Divergent converted me, so to speak (I used to read really childish books before I read it, and at first I was disturbed because it wasn't some stupid gentle fairy book, but I got through that stupidity and realised how amazing it actually is. Now I read lots of dystopian). For me, I used to stay up really late reading them. It really affected me and changed the way I read books completely. And it gives you a lot of insight into teenage life and society (especially society through the eyes of a teenager). I have to warn you though, the last book is really sad.

But don't watch the movie first if you hadn't already seen it because that would be kind of a spoiler. Read Divergent and don't let know one tell you not to other wise because you'll miss out on all the fun and excitement going on in the book. Ps: After you read Divergent read Insurgent.

katie I would definitely recommend it. However, it is very violent and there is some romance. In my personal opinion, it is not confusing although it all depends on your level of comprehensiveness I guess. The book is so great though. I love it. The characters are great. It is so compelling. I read it in 2 days. The book is pretty straightforward and easy to follow. But read the books first. They are much better than the movie in my opinion. The only problem is the endings. Lincoln Yes. It is not at all confusing. The author doesn't explain everything in the beginning, but that matches the character. She's lived in this world all her life and doesn't explain things she takes for granted, and there's much about the world she doesn't yet know, so you get to discover details along with her and see what she finds important. This is a great read and a great example of good world building.

Vera Okay, so i NEVER watch the movies before reading the books, BUT i saw Divergent before reading the book and loved then. Read the book and loved that too. Then I watched the movie again and just thought it was total bullcrap. The plot's detailed, [which is always a good thing!] so if you skip important parts or skim then it may be harder to understand. I read the book when I was 9 or 10 and I was perfectly able to understand it.

If you watch the movie first, there's no point in reading the book, you already know what's going to happen.

Kypris Drake So far it's not confusing, there's just a lot to keep track of. As with any new world, you need a score card at first, but then it all makes more and more sense. I'm enjoying the unpredictable nature of the plot in particular.

The movie is not good at all though. They cut chopped it up so much and a lot of important parts were left out. However, watching the movie first will definitely help you connect with the characters and allow you to put a face with a name.

It is slightly intimidating as it is slightly large, but it won't seem like it when you read it. I think I read it in less than a week. Anca It's not confusing unless you overthink it. The language is pretty simple and the narration straightforward.

Brooke Lorren I love it! One of my favorite book series ever. My husband didn't like it though, for the same reasons that I loved it. It is written from a first person point of view, so there are parts of the book where the character is talking about how they are feeling, etc. Husband hated it, I thought that was what made the book.

The ending of the third book, which I won't give away here, was a let-down... I replaced the ending in my mind with fan fiction written by other people, I was so unhappy with it. However, the rest of the book series was great. I read all three books in about 2 days because I couldn't put it down.

Andy It is a very short book so I would go for it, even if you have apprehensions.
