This book is fantastic. The writing is exquisite, the world building amazing and the characters are flawed, multi-dimensional and compelling. The issues of lgbt and sexual assault are addressed though they are not graphic. If you are a first time reader I would say hold off for a bit. I would say this would appeal to readers who are 14 and older.

For first-time YA readers I would suggest Harry Potter or The Hunger Games or Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy or any of the other long-time favorites out there.
If you want your child to read a wonderful fantasy story dealing with sexual assault and its aftermath, go for Robin McKinley's Deerskin.
I would not recommend Girls of Paper and Fire.
