Did you know that I really appreciate your review of the Glass Bead Game by Herman Hesse? Given that you wrote it back in 2019, can only imagine what your state of mind must be in current times. Thank you for your thoughtful review, maybe I'll pick the book up in a more peaceable time, or maybe when it's necessary to remember what a knowledge-focused society used to be like.

Thank you for the comments, Sophia. Yes, the evils of Trump 1.0 were starkly obvious and yet now here we are, in a society doubled-down on Trump 2.0--or evil raised to the second power. Evil again except this time with more evil. I deal with high levels of anxiety every day. And your comments are well said, this book would be more meaningful if we could build a society where knowledge and expertise were actually valued instead of subservient to ideology. George Orwell had it right.

Hey David, I recently read you (very good!) review on "surviving autorcracy". Well, I was just looking for something that could answer the title's question and not only make the point that current regimes around the world are damaging democracy. Bolsonaro's Brazil was just enough frightening. Would you have any books to recommend on that matter? How to stop and survive autocracy? previous historic examples etc
