I would recommend A Walk in the Woods.
Rita Oliveira
Definitely not - I would recommend A Short History of Nearly Everything or One Summer: America 1927. Anyone can take something out of either of those books, but this one is very specific to Great Britain, and if you're not familiar with the peculiarities of the island it can become very boring, which is a shame because Bill is a great writer and his other books are worth reading. My first book of his was At Home; most people would consider that boring, but I actually really enjoyed it.
Aggie Sanders
I enjoyed this one quite a bit, but the first one I read was The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, and I loved it so much I bought copies for everyone on my Christmas list that year.....that was a very good one to start with.
PATRICIA BRINKER
Not new, just re-reading most of his books. I am English so very interested in his writing about my country. Also loved Walk in the Woods and the movie.
Sandra
I suggest in a Sunburned Country. This one is ok, but not his best.
John Graham Wilson
I found this book far too full of facetious humour and not enough informative narrative. It does not really tell the reader much about the oddities of the English. Paul Theroux does it much better in his The Kingdom by the Sea.

I would start with At Home: A Short History of Private Life.
Andrew Fraser
"In a Sunburned Country" ranks high on the list as well.

If you are over 55 years of age, Life And Times Of The Thunderbolt Kid is the book to start with.
After that, I would recommend A Walk In The Woods.
One Summer (1927) does follow some dark subjects and is not 'laugh out loud funny' like Life And Times or Walk in the Woods are.

I would not recommend this as a Bryson starter unless you live in England or are very familiar with the island and its people. The memoir of his childhood, 1927' and A Walk in the Woods are my three personal favorites (so far).
