How long does it usually take for you to fully plan each book you write? Do you create your characters first, or the plot?

I'm not really much of a planner. Whenever I try to plan a novel I usually end up not wanting to write it because I already know everything that's going to happen! I guess my first draft is my plan - that's my version of telling myself the story. It usually takes me a few months to write the first draft, then I work on the detail and flesh out the characters.
