I'm going with Sophia and Minna in Sylvia Townsend Warner's *Summer Will Show'. Also love Robin Hobb's Fitz and the Fool. Both great characters, though I wish they'd stop displacing and just get it on already! (My answer to this question will no doubt be different next week.)

I am a YA librarian who reads a lot of YA lit to stay familiar with the books when people ask for recommendations: decent stories, many dealing some very serious issues, sometimes not the highest quality writing. I miss "grown up books" and have been trying to weave them back into my repertoire. I loved my 18th and 19th century literature classes (decades ago). What are some of your favorite 19th century novels?
