I think this was probably the most Stephen King-y horror book I've read in a long time, and that didn't come from the horror but the character. There are Lovecraftian elements to this story too. I basically went into this book knowing only that it's a "haunted house book without ghosts doing the haunting" and I was pleasantly surprised.
Um, to sum it up, basically Thiago is a recent widower. Before his wife died, they bought a condo and not all was as it seemed. We join him as he's going through his grief. It's both a telling of their relationship and his grief, as well as all the haunted shit that's been happening to him since they moved into their condo.
It's a shorter read and I truly enjoyed it. I'm saddened that the author hasn't written more....more

D: I want more from this world. I truly enjoyed it. Yes, if you're a hard Orion shipper, this might disappoint, but I never honestly heavily favored him as a character. El has always been my spirit animal. I loved the explanation of the enclaves and all that. I loved how things tied out with Orion (honestly, I suspected as much -- thought he might be (view spoiler)[ an artifice or something similar, or maybe a child one of group of kids who killed all the other kids had before they were brought down so kinda a both type thing (hide spoiler)] .)

I bought it on a whim and sort of set it aside for a bit. I'm not a huge fan of Arthurian legends (I don't hate them like Fairy stuff but I don't seek them out either) but it looked interesting.
It's about Bree, who lost her mother in a car accident. She's given reason to believe her mother's death might not have been just an accident so she infiltrates this secret on-campus society that dates back to Arthurian times. Apparently, the knights of the round table live on in their descendants and will "rise" when there's a need for them. Of course, she's black and everyone else is white, in a southern town, so that's fun.
It was an interesting take on Arthur and all that, without it being an Arthurian legend retelling in modern times. I didn't get the twist at the end until I was nearly upon it. I was like "wouldn't it be wild if X happened" then I paused and thought about it, then rethought about all the clue, and was like NO that won't happen, but then YES, YES PLEASE LET THAT HAPPEN. and it did. ;=; I was so happy.
It does have insta-love and a triangle, but they're handled really well. I wasn't bothered with them (I'm actually hoping she ends up with the non-insta-love one, because I love that whole enemies to lovers thing.) They aren't obnoxious, the plot doesn't revolve around them, and they aren't really mentioned much. They're sort of pushed to the side, as much as romance can be.
The plot was solid and interesting. Bree's history was interesting. The order was interesting. It all was fun and interesting. There's LGBTQ+ and non-binary chara reps (that aren't minor, one line characters.)

I think my biggest thing was her love for this man, whom I felt was an idiot. Like, I'm all for opposites attract and shit like that, but I just have to take a step back and wonder at someone who'd be taken in by some guy who's trying to bring about the end of the world. Like, even if he was using it for other purposes, he clearly got something out of it all. That's scary to me, personally.
The plot was a big weak too. It had a plot, per say, but it was very, very surface level. Like 'these dudes are missing and, oh, this guy wants to destroy the world and remake it in his image. Luckily, they're intertwined so that'll make things simpler.' There wasn't a whole lot of guessing or figuring clues out. There was action but it was somewhat reactive action to events. Does that make sense?
I did think she did a good job introducing the new characters and fleshed out some of the other ones, all said and done.
It did have that filler second book feeling to me but it was still worth reading....more

I'm on book 4 atm and this series just keeps getting better and better. I'd say this was probably the "weakest" in this series and it's still a 5 star from me.
This is one of those lesser series that really need love. I love the characters. I love Kellan. I love his companions. That squirrel-cat! LOL! The magic system is interesting. I liked the world building. The concept of the Argosi is fascinating to me. What I truly liked was that Kellan isn't a strong magician and so he relies on his wits to get him out of scraps. He's very cunning.

My only real complaint is that there's no dictionary for the Navajo terms used in it. There are a lot just thrown at you and most aren't explained in any way while for others it would be nice to have a reminder. True story, I did try to learn Navajo when I was younger. It didn't help me here. LOL....more

It's basically about this village that's in the middle of the woods. The youngest child is sacrificed to the evil witch that lives there. They do this every year and, if they don't do this, the witch will come and kill them all.
On the other side of things, a witch visits the woods every year at this time and plucks the babes away because, gorsh, these strange villagers keep leaving young babies out there and they'd starve to death or animals would get them if she didn't take them away. She carries them to cities and feeds them star light. They become filled with star light and are thought to be great children. The families that take in these star children are considered blessed and the kids radiate starlight.
This kindly witch gives one such girl the moon to drink, as well as the stars, and the witch finds she must keep her and train her to be a witch too.
This was really good. It was told from various VPs: the witch, the girl's crazy mom, the girl, one of the chief villagers, etc. I loved the evil witch in this one. It was quite cleverly done. A nice twist on the evil witch tale.
It was just a very well written and entertaining book. Now I must read more of this authors. >:D...more

I turned it over and one reviewer quote said something like 'regardless of whatever other book you find today, buy this book.' So, naturally, I screamed: 'DON'T TELL ME HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE' (in my head, damn it, in my head) and bought this book.
Then yesterday saw me at about 75% done and it was 9pm. I knew I'd need the next book but what if I bought the kindle book and my device died while I was reading this?! What would happen to this WORLD?! So I had to run to the bookstore, at 9pm, to buy the next one.
So freakin' addictive. T.T
Loved this! Loved, loved, loved this! I didn't know this was a western with magic before going into it, which was probably for the best, but damn did it suck me in. Let's cheer for a black female lead character! Yay! The gay character isn't a cardboard cutout of a character so the cast could be diverse. I loved that too. Even the twins and the rangers!
She has a DESTINY, which I normally hate, but I think the author handled that well. Both the vagueness of it and the fact that it really didn't make her special, as well as having her ass handed to her for much of the book, helped balance that out and make it less of a DESTINY and more of a THESE MONSTERS NEED KILLIN' AND WILL KILL ME TOO SO, DAMNIT, GOTTA KILL THEM FIRST type thing.
What can I say? I really loved this. I really, really did. I just had to gush. ;_; This is one of my favorites of the year, if not the favorite, and the best surprise I've had from an author I haven't read before.

My only complaint is that I didn't feel like she was ever really in any trouble. She'd just move from place to place in such a way that it was almost deus ex machina. People would just show up, randomly, and be all helpful (even if they proved to be jerks or asses later.) There was really only one scene that might've been a bit chancy but even then...
Some of them verged on the ridiculous. Like one scene has her escaping from this man, in the middle of a blizzard, and the place she breaks into just so happens to be this long, lost friend of hers that she hadn't seen or talked to or known where she lived in like 10 years or so.
I think this is her short story writing coming in. It felt like this was jumping from short story to short story, etc. They were all compact and separate in themselves. It's not a bad thing.
Actually, this author would probably be one of those rare, few authors who could write a book in short story form, having all the stories linked together but separate. I recently read a book like that (gosh, I forget the name) and this book was very much better than that, regardless of the fact that it wasn't told in the same format. It wanted to and I wonder if the first incarnation of this was like that, but yeah...
I also wish she could've gone into more detail of the crossroad devil, the other devil, and all that. We get glimpses but nothing really in depth.
The ending felt a bit rushed to. She's looking for her sister and all that. The way she found her (big ending spoiler) (view spoiler)[on a TV commercial (hide spoiler)] made me wonder what the point of the deal really was. I know that wasn't the point of this book. It's a road trip book about a girl who finds herself. It just felt a little anti-climatic.
Overall, I really loved this book. I liked the characters, etc. It was a sweet, touching story....more
