Lock In (Lock In, #1)

I want to say this was fun (and I think I just did), so I'll just say it outright, Fun! I'm a little hesitant to say that because the story behind the story has a serious tone a flu epidemic and a multi-murder investigation. This is what I think it is about books like these: Sci-Fi authors are cool because they imagine things yet to exist, crazy stuff that could possibly happen, or just crazy stuff that probably won't. I don't read a lot of Sci-Fi books, but I'm drawn to certain ones for those reasons. All fiction stretches the imagination in some way, but I guess books like these stretch that “imagination of the possible and I like how Scalzi (my first Scalzi by the way) gets heady with ideas without sacrificing the story. I thought it would be about a pandemic, but it's more about what might happen after a pandemic (one with very specific cause and effect, so kudos to the author for originating those ideas as well). Not at all an apocalypse type of novel, if you're sick of those kind of books. Bonus for readers who like crime/mysteries here too. And there's a book #2 coming. Count me in!

Thanks Nat! Two words that have no business together - unless your reading a sci-fi fiction novel... or maybe it's just me. A great story to read, but gosh I hope it never happens! ;)

Haha! I knew I get it handed to me for saying fun! Somehow the author balanced between the two things, which made the entire book - un-boring (just created a word there). I hear you on the half-assed ploys, so I get picky with the sci-fi I'm willing to try, but this one had me in the fisrt twenty pages or so. Thank you Liz!

Glad I read this one Josen! Definitely want to try Redshirts now, especially after seeing your review about it. Scalzi seems very good at trying new things.

Glad you enjoyed Ron"
Thanks so much Maddie! I said review soon, but it looks like later - I'll get it though! :)"
Fab. Review, Ron ..."
Thank you Maddie! Told you I'd do it. ;)

Thanks Cheri! I might like the genre a little more than you, but it's not often my go to. Fun is a good word here, plus creativity for this one. Not a bad one to try at all. :)

Thank you Holly! The follow-up to this book just came out. I've been hearing good things too.

Thank you! Here I go mentioning in my review that I'll read the second book - and I haven't. Scalzi is certainly a talented writer though. I think you'll like it. I didn't recognize the title Starter Villain, but have seen the cover - I look forward to what you say about it, Tracy. :)

"Start Villain" (released 09/23) is his newest novel. It looks good. Stat tuned! Thanks, Ron. = )

It's the only book I've read by Scalzi, but my guess is that fun/smart is always there for him.

Thanks!
