I expected better

QB Tyler is a great writer, and I'm a fan of the taboo romance subgenre, but this book just wasn't it for me.

I wish that Maddie had been older. Like early twenties. Her being seventeen just didn't sit right with me.

I've read the Off Balance series (new version) where the FMC is sixteen in Georgia (Georgia's age of consent is 16). But reading about a 17 year-old in Oregon, it just wasn't right.

I would have liked it a lot more if Maddie was 20-22 and visiting from university when Cal and her did stuff. Something where they have time apart and it doesn't feel eerily adjacent to grooming.

Anne E ♡ emo + OTT Hs I just finished a book with a 16yo h too. And I wondered why the author just didn't make her at least 17 and a half & give it a few months before she turns 18. Or how about just plain 18yo? Pushing the age younger is pushing it for me.

Batool Zainab Suleman Exactly. Like in Sinner by Sierra Simone, the FMC is 21 and the MMC is ~ 35, but there's no grooming-esque relationship. He knew her as a child then he didn't see her for years until she was 21.

In this book, her being 17 was unnecessary. Whereas in the Off Balance series, her being sixteen is sort of important for the plot, in this book she could have easily been older.

When the FMC is under 18, it just makes me feel icky. The age of consent in Canada is 16, but with restrictions (like there cannot be any power imbalance between them).

I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if she was already 18 when it started.

oh, I didn't know that! The power imbalance is a huge factor in the age-gap romances with much younger heroines. It does help when an author characterizes h as emotionally mature & the couple clearly discuss the whole age-gap thing. But most erotic romances unfortunately skip these ;-/

Batool Zainab Suleman 10000% agree. Maddie wasn't even emotionally mature in this book. She was an annoying teenager. And I didn't feel their chemistry (unlike the Off Balance series, where the chemistry was off the charts)
