did not like it

The heroine was intolerably stupid, annoying, attention-seeking, and inconsiderate. She grated on my nerves so badly, I can barely bring myself to read on. I find Libba Bray's writing style for this book completely unreadable. I have a strong suspicion she read a reference guide to using slang during the Flapper era and made it her personal goal to use as much speakeasy language as possible in every single spoken sentence.

Mizuki Oh no, I want to read this book because of the glowing reviews!

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies A lot of people enjoyed it, it just didn't work for me. 20s era fiction and I have a bad history.

message 3: by Mizuki (new) - added it

Mizuki There're so many books I have yet to finish, so The Diviners has to wait!

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies I know it adds to the feel of the book, but I felt it was excessive and it annoyed me. I'm glad you liked it. I didn't.

ash I agree with you! I couldn't even finish the book!

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies Libba Bray is very hit or miss for me.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ I have a strong suspicion she read a reference guide to using slang during the Flapper era and made it her personal goal to use as much speakeasy language as possible in every single spoken sentence.

This, so much. Evie's language sounded completely artificial. It drove me nuts (among many other things about this book that rubbed me the wrong way).

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies I'm not a fan of 20s books :X

message 10: by Sera (new)

Sera Honestly the heroine was way too annoying for me to continue, i completely agree with you on this one.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ I just finished the second book, because I'd already requested it on NetGalley. Surprisingly, I liked it a lot better than the first book. Evie was still her annoying 20's-slangy self, but gained some depth as a character; there's a Chinese main character, Ling, that I really liked; Henry was sympathetic; and even Memphis was interesting to me in the second volume. The story kind of unravels at the end as Libba Bray sets up the next volume of the series, but other than that I actually liked it pretty well. I'd be interested in your take on it.

hpboy13 Respectfully disagree - I loved Evie and found her to be both likable and believable, and thought the slang added to the 20s feel. I can see how this book's writing style isn't for everyone though, it just really worked for me.

Rose I'm only 1/3 of the way in and I totally agree with your review. It's annoying as hell...and how!

message 15: by Lauren (new) - added it

Lauren I didn't like this book either, I found the main character quite annoying also

Jessica Sinn (Books and Trouble) I'm liking the story, but Evie is indeed a tool. I wince every time she says the word "Unc."

message 17: by Kay (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kay The first book was ok, and I love books set in the 20s.

I had a lot of the same problems as you. Evie would go through spurts where I tolerated her (bordering on liking her) but then she would be a little diva showing off her "magic trick" to anyone who would watch.

dnela I agree, Evie is such a chore to read. I enjoy the other characters much more than I enjoy her. Not only are you right about her fake sounding diction (like a paraody of a cali girl), but her selfishness and eggheaded lack of foresight really made me want to throttle her at times. Still, I gave the book 3 stars, because I did enjoy some parts of the plot.

message 19: by Mo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mo I agree with you. It grated my nerves that Evie felt the need to be “on the level ALL THE TIME. Like girl calm down

message 20: by Lexie (new) - rated it 1 star

Lexie Lawless Haha YES, it was exactly like that. Like [insert animal] + [random word or animal part]. IT'S THE CAT'S MEOW. THE ELEPHANT'S TRUNK. THE DOG'S PARTICULARS. It's like we couldn't read this book without a single page needing some language reference. I imagined every single scene like a scene from a old-timey movie, all the girls pouting like Marilyn Monroe everytime they said an oh-sound, because that's what I imagined the author wanted me to perceive it.

Rachel I would have given this 4 stars but during the end Libba just drag on and on about stuff that 50% wasn't relevant to the book. She has an interesting concept and cool setting: paranormal mystery in the 1920s. But she somehow makes most of it dry and boring.

And I actually enjoyed Evie's character(mostly) but I agree with everything you said about her.

Tiffany Yesss This is how I feel. So nerve grating.

message 23: by Ellen (new) - rated it 1 star

Ellen I gave up. One of the most obnoxious MCs ever.

Erika Hensel I am STRUGGLING to get through this book. It's a cool concept that just keeps circling around a plot. Over. And. Over. Ugh
