Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Why do you think it is important to read? Why do you like to read?

I think it's so sad that not many of our children don't enjoy reading! I feel that if maybe they tried they would end up enjoying it and finally realizing what they've been missing out on for so long!

There are also many reasons that reading is good and important for us! Why do you think it is important?

Why do you like to read?

Alley Kat (alleykat666) I like to read because it lets me escape from normal life. It keeps my mind off of bad things that might have happened that day or sad things that have happened over time. Reading brings new experiences and wonderful adventures that dedicated readers will never forget. Reading is especially important because it's just a little something more to add a splash of color into your day.

I think this was great! If I had to answer this, those words are exactly what I would of said!

Trisha | 30284 comments This is such a great question!!
I asked both of my daughters:

My 14 year old said: "I like to read because it gives me ideas to draw and it's fun to go into another world for a while (not like hiding from the world) but getting to experience or imagine a new different world. And that's just pretty cool. And when we were reading books about the Holocaust at school (Boy in the Striped Pajamas & Milkweek), it made us really think about things."

My 8 year old: "I like reading because it sort of gives you a nice imagination. And it teaches you a lot of stuff you might not know, without even realizing it. Some of it is really important, some of it is serious, but some of it makes you just laugh! It opens your imagination."

Finally, I enjoy reading because it's something I share! It seems like it should be such an individual thing, but really it's not. I was a part of 6 different IRL book clubs last year. I discussed so many different books with so many different people. It opened our eyes to different ideas and different beliefs - it was simply amazing. People connecting through books! And now, on here, I enjoy Buddy Reads where we come together and enjoy books together!

I also read with my girls so it's something we are able to share. Books open up a lot of possibilities for me to talk with my girls about a lot of tough topics by making the conversation much easier to start - because we talk about it over a book.

I think reading is just an amazing privilege we have :)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments You are such a good parent :) When I have a kid of my own, I will need your advice lol...

I loved reading with my parents also when I was a kid (mostly with my father).

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Wow! Can you tell your daughters that those are great answers?!?! I love those answers! I read Milkweed and it did make me think differently!

I love what your 8 year old said... sometimes it makes you laugh, some of it is serious, and some is important.

It is an amazing privilege! AMAZING!

Erin Latimer | 108 comments Aaaw, Trisha your kids sound wonderful!

Reading has always been SO important to me. Reading helps you through horrible times by letting you escape into another world. It gives you inspiration and lets your imagination run wild. It lets you experience life shattering situations that make you grateful for you own life. It puts you into other people's shoes: For a few hours you can change sex or race or experience life from a different social status. Experience other countries.
There are no limits to where books can take you.

Kathy | 7669 comments I love reading, it helps you to learn new things and see things from a different perspective sometimes. When I read it's like a movie playing in my head, so I don't watch TV much anymore.

I also make my kids read at least 30 mins on school days and at least 1-2 hours on the weekends and no school days. When I started working at the library I started making them read and I watched their test scores for reading and math and science shoot through the roof. Sometimes my son says he gets tired of reading but when I bring a book home of one of his favorite authors or a series he loves it's like Christmas for him. LOL :)

There are some books we listen to together on audio CD. I really enjoy doing that with them, and they love it too.

I just rediscovered audiobooks and love them so much! It's amazing because you can do other stuff (housework and stuff) while you're "reading".
