Hi Verdant, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

This group has risen to the top of my list because the selections are consistently excellent.

Hi, Sue. You've been with us for a while, but a belated welcome nonetheless. I always thought of our book selections as consistently random, but I'm glad you like them. It's all based on what members think to nominate and vote for.
I'm curious how the Heinlein discussions are going to work out myself. It's a change of pace from our usual one book at a time approach. If it proves popular, maybe we can think of similar "groups" of book discussions in the future. Look forward to your comments on "Ready Player One".

Yes, but I didn't know where else to post. I realized my reading list has been coming mostly from this group, and wanted to share. I haven't yet been able to get this month's Classic selection from the library (for some reason there is a waiting list), but was pleasantly surprised that Ready Player One was immediately available.

I'm Bas, as per the handle. I tend toward sci-fi or fantasy series, as opposed to standalone novels, on the basis that if the writing clicks there'll be more where that came from. Not that I have any aversion to a good self-contained story, of course.
I see reading mostly as escapist entertainment, not as an exercise of any kind. Also, in general, I prefer relatively clear distinctions between protagonists and antagonists over the attitude that "everything is a shade of grey", which in my experience usually translates to "everyone is a jerk in some way or other and misery is the status quo". I stay away from authors like Ian Irvine and George R. R. Martin for that reason.
Some series I've enjoyed recently are the Eli Monpress books by Rachel Aaron, which feature an interesting take on animism, the Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell which focuses on space naval tactics in a strong fashion, and Ryk Brown's Frontiers Saga which starts off somewhat weakish but turns into an enjoyable hero's epic in space.
Hi Bas,welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

Hi, Bas - Welcome to both Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and this group! I hope you'll join us for some interesting SciFi discussions.
Great! Another fan of Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series. I'm all caught up with that, including the "Lost Stars" side-series, and eagerly awaiting the release of Perilous Shield this October (in US.) (Though I prefer the series about Geary.) Have you read any of Weber's Honor Harrington series or Moon's Vatta's War series? We have discussion of favorite military science fiction around here someplace. :)
Welcome aboard.

Hi!
I'm Jim McAllister, a Sci-Fi fan and a new author.
My GoodReads Author's page is here;
http://www.goodreads.com/OldSaltCityAce
Check out my blogs there for samples of my work!
I'm a big Burroughs, Heinlein, and Asimov fan, along with modern writers like Michael R. Hicks. My first Sci-Fi book was Tripleplanetary, and I still love the Lensmen Series!
I travel for work three weeks a month, and do most of my reading and writing then.
Glad to be in the group!

Hello everyone. I'm very happy to find a Sci-Fi Fantasy group of avid readers.
In the 70s & 80s, I cut my reading molars on Edgar Rice Burroughs (John Carter, Tarzan, Mars), Isaac Asimov and later was handed a box of Anne McCaffery Pern books. I'll never forget my grade 9 science teacher taking my novel from me in class and holding it up for everyone to see. I Am a Barbarian That didn't do much for my dating life. Those were the days before the publishing world imagined a market for young adults, so we had to read what we could get our hands on.
After reading fantasy for many decades, and thoroughly enjoying the conversion of many fantasy novels into film, I've started writing my own as well.
My current reading focus is to catch up to the genre after a decade or so of educational reading (that left no time for reading for pleasure). Recent reads include Plain Kate, A Game of Thrones, Wake of the Bloody Angel, Ironskin, and Boneshaker.
My favourite sub-genre is epic or high quest fantasy. I love the dynamics between groups of characters as they follow a formulaic quest.
Any suggestions on Quest readings or authors?

Hi, Cheryl, and welcome to the group. Glad to have you aboard and look forward to discussing fantasy stories with you. (I noticed you already jumped into our group's reading Challenges. Great!)
So, quest fantasy recommendations... You've already got some Tolkien and Le Guin on your bookshelf (I seem to have liked Lord of the Rings and Earthsea than you, though! So perhaps you should consider my recommendations suspect.)
Edit I started a new topic on Favorite Quest Fantasy in the Recommendations folder with some thoughts, so others can join in.

Welcome. I'd add David Eddings Elenium and Tamuli to the above list. The Elenium has a formulaic quest, whilst the Tamuli has a slightly different undertaking, but brings back the good character interactions of the first series.

Adam, I started a new topic on Favorite Quest Fantasy in the Recommendations folder. It'll be easier to find later if people add their favorites there, rather than having a lot of ideas get lost here in the Introduction topic.

You were just born a little too late...I graduated HS in '75; we all would have flocked to a girl reading a title like that!
But then again, I played chess in science class in HS! LOL

Hi, Katy, and welcome to the group! I hope you'll join us for some interesting discussions. I took a peek at your favorites list and think you'll fit in just fine here! (Also reminded me I need to finally read the second trilogy of Hayden's Rhapsody novels. So many books, so little time...)

Thanks, G33z3r. I'll see if I can think up a list without it getting too ridiculously long.

Thanks, Katy. That sounds like a book I'd like to read, adding it to my list.

I'm another writer I'm afraid. I love Pratchett CS Lewis, films like galaxy Quest and I grew up on a diet of that stuff they used to show between 6 and 7 on BBC 2 in the 1980s (showing my age).
Hello everyone anyway.
Cheers
MTM

Hi, Alex! Welcome to the group. Please jump right into any conversations that interest you. Look forward to hearing your impressions of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. It's the first of three Heinlein classics we're planning on discussing, one per month.(Note also that all our past book discussions are still open for comments, too!)
Welcome.

Hi Alex, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

I have been reading these posts with great interest. I owe most of my knowledge of science fiction to my husband who has floor to ceiling shelves full of science fiction books. It is really nice to let someone else do the collecting and have the kind of book you enjoy just waiting there to be read. Although many years ago, I came home and said, “Here, I found a new author, and handed him a first edition Star Wars.
I don’t see any discussions on a subject that interest me. When, as readers, do you fail to suspend your disbelief? In Stranger in a Strange Land (I will date myself and say I read it the same year it was published) I just couldn’t believe it was possible to teach weeds not to grow. It happened a few months ago in Angelmass by Timothy Zahn. I could accept everything except a sentient black hole.
We happily read stories about the currently impossible, time travel, FTL travel, aliens from other planets, magic, and other super human powers but once in a while something simply doesn’t seem possible. I would like to know when that happens to other readers,

Hi, Romana, and welcome to the group. I see you already joined at least one other discussion. (I'm trying to decide if your username is a Dr. Who reference or just a coincidence.)
If you have an idea for a new topic to discuss, why not click on over to the General SF/F Chat folder and click the (small and obscure) "new topic" link and start a new conversation, such as "When do you fail to suspend your disbelief?" I suspect there are plenty of folks here who have ideas on the subject.

Hi Romana, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

I want to start out by saying what a fantastic group! I've found this group very helpful and informative. It really helps having so many like readers to be able to share with!
I'm Matt, I live in the U.S. and am in my 30's. I'm a second generation Sci Fi/Fantasy reader. I started young with Lewis and Tolkien and then found myself reading grittier works in King and Rice. I've recently flew through the Song of Fire and Ice series and am anxiously awaiting the next books.
I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you better and sharing some good works with you all! Thanks for having me.
Matt
