Introduce Yourself! (Archived)

I am a fantasy fanatic! It all started when I was 12 and my friend lent me the Avalon.
I have numerous book shelves as I have to buy the books I love and if my house was on fire they are the first thing I would save!!
I love historical fantasy (I study Ancient history and major in Warcraft and generalship) and heroic fantasy.
My favorite authors are many!! But I give honorable mention to Sara Douglas and David Gemmel who never fail to keep me up late into the night and whose characters I always fall in love with!!
I look forward to chatting with you all!!

Hi, Jessie. Welcome to both Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and the group. I look forward to discussing fantasy with you. I know I enjoyed Douglass's Wayfarers Redemption (and a good deal of other fantasy from your bookshelf.) I hope you'll take a look around and join in any topics here you think are interesting.

I read from a wide variety of genres. My favorites being sci-fi and fantasy. Very few of my real life friends are into reading sci-fi and fantasy. It'll be nice to make new friends with similar interests and be able to have discussions.

Hello, Jessica. Welcome to the Group. Please join right into any conversations that strike your fancy (or start one of your own.) We enjoyed talking all things science fiction and fantasy (and even a few things that aren't.)
I noticed you are currently reading Wool. We had one of our Group Book Discussion of Wool earlier this year; those conversations never ran, they just tend to go dormant until someone else finishes the book and prods it back to life with a new comment; so resurrected if you feel inclined.

The first book I remember reading in entirety is Redwall. LOTR and the Dragonlance books were also a huge part of my childhood and major influences on my future writing.
Not many of my friends are big readers, and my wife's taste in reading is far different than mine (Twilight, 50 Shades, Nicholas Sparks, although I did get her to read Harry Potter), so I look forward to having fellow fantasy fans to discuss books with!

Hi, Heimdall, and welcome to the group. Glad you dropped in. I look forward to discussing epic fantasy with you.

Hi, Allynn, and welcome to both Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and the group. I look forward to hearing (or rather, reading) your opinions on sci-fi and fantasy. I like your choice of McCaffrey books, too; actually, I like all your titles (except "Time Enough For Love", which is far from my favorite Heinlein.) Since you mentioned "I, Robot", I'll mention that later in November we have a group discussion scheduled for "Robot Visions", which shares several stories with the older "I, Robot" collection (Asimov was a prolific repackager!) I hope you'll drop into the discussion if you get a chance!
Since you're about to release your first book, you may want to check out the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Author Program and set up an author account. It will let you promote your books with a blog, schedule of events (online and real world), add a bio, and other tools for connecting with Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ readers. And when your book does come out, we have a Promotions folder where authors can tell us something about their books.

Hi Allynn, welcome to the Sci-Fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

I joined this site because I love reading fantasy/Science Fiction and wanted to connect with like minded people. My friends would describe me as shy hehehe but once i get going i can be a bit of a chatterbox :):)
What else....well... I like books by C.S Lewis, JRR Tolkien and Stephanie Meyer among others. At the moment I am reading a interesting book titled Emanuel Stone And The Phoenix Shadow by Isaac Solomon. It was recommended to me by a close friend and I must admit I wasn't expecting much. However to my surprise I've found it to be a very deep story about hope, following the journey of an ordinary young man who is coming to grips with his identity in a troubled world. So far it is the most entertaining book I've read this year as it mixes many themes (sci fi ,paranormal, fantasy, romance) and challenges certain stereotypes held of young people by addressing issues not usually attributed to youth.

Hi Faye, and welcome to the Sci-Fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

Some of my favorite authors are Orson Scott Card (I waited for 20 years for Ender's Game to come out as a movie), Anne McCaffery, Raymond E. Feist, Tamora Pierce, Isaac Asimov, Heinlein, and Robin McKinley.
I have strong opinions and love to be asked for them. I love speculating about the future.
Sarah wrote: "I'm from the Western United States. I'm 36 and not afraid to own my age.... I love fantasy and sci-fi, whenever I meet someone who loves the same kinds of books we talk forever...."
Hi, Sarah, and welcome to the group. I hope you find us to be folks you can talk about SF/F books with forever.
I like your choice of authors. On the other hand, I hate it when they make a movie of a book I love. I know it won't be the same, that it won't conform to my imaginings, that all the characters will look different/wrong. I'm sure authors love the attention (and money) the comes with a major movie adaptation, but I really wish Hollywood would leave my books alone. (Okay, I confess, the Lord of the Rings movie was pretty cool.)
And by the way, congrats on your first e-book. We have a Promotions folder where you can tell us all about it, if you wish.

Hi Sarah, and welcome to the Sci-Fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

Full disclosure -- I write, also, but I won't prattle on about it. Cheers.

But sometimes there's something so cool about seeing a world that you loved in a book come to life. Even if they don't get all the details right. Of course there are changes I would have made to Ender's Game, but my biggest fear when I saw that they had Harrison Ford playing General Garff, was that they would make the movie about him when it was supposed to be about Ender. They kept the focus on Ender, which I appreciated.

My name is Mark. I have enjoyed the various worlds that sci-fi and fantasy offer since I was very young. My favourite authors include E.E Doc Smith, Brian Stableford and H. G Wells. I am currently trying to complete my own first novel and have written a Doctor Who story. I look forward to joining in on discussions.

you're more into classical SF? Then, you'll enjoy our monthly classical discussions. This month's classical is Anubis Gates, which is fantasy, though.
Hi Mark, and welcome to the Sci-Fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

I look forward to getting to know everyone ^_^

It looks like you've already found your way around the discussion sections, so I'll look forward to discussing sci-fi and fantasy with you in the future.
(I knew we had one other J.D. In this group; When I checked, it seems there are now actually 4 J.D.'s in this group - and all of them authors, too. It's a good thing someone invented last names! :)

Hi J.D.,welcome to the Sci-Fi and Heroic Fantasy group.
Hi Ciara, welcome to the Sci-Fi and Heroic Fantasy group. Glad to meet someone else that is such a fan of Eddings and Feist.

I'm a lifelong reader of scifi, fantasy and horror from Wales, and another big Eddings fan! Other authors I particularly enjoy include Douglas Adams, H.P. Lovecraft, Terry Pratchett (met him once, many years ago), Michael Moorcock and Roger Zelazny. I like lots of other things to, particularly authors who use words in an interesting way (Shakespeare, Gilbert, etc.).
I'm always looking for new things to read and new things to discuss (I'm also a veteran of online political fora), so I shall throw myself in and see what I can find to discuss, and what recommendations look interesting.

I'm planning to catch up with some more contemporary stuff, so I'll be looking into that at some point - I admit I'm probably a bit out of date generally!

I love to read SF and Fantasy with philosophical roots (ain’t them all?) Although, I’m not a high fantasy guy, I like those fantasies with Science (more on physics) influences; mildly paced to fast. I need some recommendations that suits my tastes(um, sorry for asking too much, LOL [Glad to meet everyone!

Hi. Lucas. Welcome to the group. I look forward to reading your philosophical musings on sci-fi and fantasy.
If by Fantasy with Science, if you mean fantasy with a rigorous system of magic, you might try some Brandon Sanderson, such as Mistborn: or Elantris. If by Fantasy with Science, you mean something that literally mixes the sciences with the supernatural, you might like China Mieville's Bas-Lag series (e.g. Perdido Street Station), a truly different world of odd new races where magic is as much a subject of science as physics is. (Personally, I find Mieville a little slow, but his work might appeal to you.)
For science fiction with a philosophical bent, perhaps mainstream Classics such as 1984, Brave New World. Ursula Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness, The Dispossessed, & The Lathe of Heaven (heck, anything by le Guin). And some of my favorites, Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz, Moon's The Speed of Dark, Delaney's Babel-17, Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Kress's Beggars in Spain, Chiang's Story of Your Life.
If you're looking for something more specific, I suggest dropping a question in our Recommendations Folder , where such topics can last longer than they can here in the Introduction topic.
And again, Welcome.

Bienvenue, Danielle, avec plaisir. Je parle un peu Francais, mais je ne parle pas Quebecois. I have the opposite problem: I am good in English but not good in French. Je ne puis pas lire mes 200 romans du fantasie d'achat en Montreal et Quebec. I wish that I could read them. Enjoy our group. Au revoir.
