Danielle Brewster | 8 comments If you fancy reading a christmas story, go for it. There's no reading limits out there.

message 102: by Joanne (new)

Joanne I have about 50 pages left on Dark Fire (Matthew Shardlake, #2) by C.J. Sansom so I will definitely be finishing that one today and picking out a new book.

Joanne wrote: "Ok great Karen! Lol how do you feel about reading a Christmas story in August? ..."

Lol
I know, I did think about it, but because we have Christmas over our summer, we like to sometimes also have "Christmas in July" in Australia which is just an excuse for people to have a big meal and get together in winter really! So I'm not that far off ;)

Hopefully Stacey's book will count for the flying ship goal, or Melissa may find one at the library. That seems to be a goal we're a little stuck on!

message 104: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Ah shoot forgot you were in Australia. That's my northern-hemisphere centred brain thinking about my own weather. What's the weather like there now?

;)
I'm in Sydney so we have a temperate climate. This has been our coldest winter in a few years - lows of 3-5c and highs of around 17-20c. Last weekend was amazing back up to 23c, but has gotten cool again this week. Very different to your winter in Canada! I lived in Toronto about 15 years ago for a year and didn't cope well ;)

message 106: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Lol wow now that's a nice winter! I'm very jealous. And I'm in Winnipeg, which has a nickname in Canada of Winterpeg. Toronto has much milder winters than us.

Boo I don't have to think about it for another 3 months so I'm not going to, lol.

lol fair enough too! ;)

message 108: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments I got about 15% of the way through The Kraken King and they landed. :( So I put that on hold and found Mercenary Instinct which takes place on a spaceship and has the extra bonus of being fairly short. I'm hoping to finish today. :)

message 109: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 3745 comments I have Across the Universe on hold at the library and I will pick it up today. I need it for my Rainbow Challenge anyway :)

Awesome Stacey!! Thanks :)

I'm going to start The Giver by Lois Lowry The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry which is fairly short and may work with a goal in the future.

Sanskriti Nagar | 314 comments Hello everyone!
I'm Sanz from India and I'm a little late to the party but I'm so glad to join your team. I read a book a week, sometimes more, depending on how much time I can spare from my job as a marketing professional.

My shelf for this challenge is Gladiator Games. The only book book I've read since Aug 02 won't work for the challenge as it's under 160 pages. Since I usually read a couple of books at a time, I should get something finished real soon.

Looking forward to getting to know you guys better and hoping to have fun!

Got through my audiobook today (no work today!) for our book 3 in series goal.
Shakespeare's Christmas (Lily Bard, #3) by Charlaine Harris

New Goal
Read a book where the character's first name starts with X

Renee suggested Fools Rush In An April Fools Day Anthology by Celia Kennedy on one of the other threads, so I've bought it on my kindle and should finish it easily this weekend, unless someone else has one of their already read books with a character name that starts with X?

message 123: by Lau (new)

Lau Maia | 0 comments I don't have any at the moment. The other two goals are OK for the moment?
I will start a new book today I believe. I will choose randomly one the goals and hopefully It will enter another one if this ones are done already.

Karen ⊰✿ | 16384 comments Mod
No probs Lau.
Stacey and Juliana are currently reading for the other 2, so hopefully they will be able to finish this weekend and we get a goal that we have already read a book for. We don't seem to be having much luck with that at the moment ;)
So I think you're right, just start reading whatever takes your fancy and we will cross our fingers for the next lot of goals!!

message 125: by Juliana (new)

Juliana Rodrigues (julianamfrodrigues) | 1748 comments Welcome to the team Lau and Sanz!!!

My book from a central american author is taking me more time then I anticipated but I'll finish it this weekend. I'll also have a second book not related with any goals so far finished pretty soon too.

message 127: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 3745 comments I have to check for the letter x. I don't think so tho! You're right we haven't had much luck but maybe down the line we will!

Nice to meet new team members- welcome to the team!

message 128: by Joanne (last edited Aug 07, 2015 04:39AM) (new)

Joanne I looked through all my upcoming books (about a dozen of them) and couldn't find any mentions of characters with names starting with X.

I even googled a bit and used listopias on GRs and having a read hard time finding options. Anyone else having better luck?

EDIT: I see Karen found one option. I'll still keep looking in case that one doesn't work out for you Karen.

All good Joanne, thanks for looking. Always helps for if we get the same goal again later!
My husband was out tonight so I'm almost half way through the book. The character is Xenia - I just got lucky that Renee had mentioned it :)
I should be able to finish it tomorrow morning

That's right Sonia. Having to remember my Spanish classes. :)

message 137: by Juliana (new)

Juliana Rodrigues (julianamfrodrigues) | 1748 comments Ok, this book was so good that I couldn't stop reading it. I know it isn't a master piece of literature, but it was such a great reading experience, and C3-PO made me laugh so much that I had to finished it now. :D

The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton
Finished: 08/07
Pages: 374
Goal: None yet

message 138: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments yeah, well.. I don't read/speak spanish since I came from Venezuela a LONG TIME AGO... so I can't even talk "portunhol" meaning, if is not english or portuguese, I can't read it.

message 139: by Lau (new)

Lau Maia | 0 comments Really Sonia?

I can read in Spanish (though I usually don't) and I understand it pretty well. I can't speak it but "portunhol" always comes in handy :)
French and German although I studied them, it's a different story. I believe I could read in french and understand the greater meaning but many words I would have to search (I do have many volumes of manga that I bought cheap in french to tackle), German in a no, no, I can't understand a word.

Really. Child trauma, long story. I don't have any issues when travelling to Spain, but reading is another matter. I always think of trying and force it, but end up changing my mind every single time.

message 141: by Juliana (new)

Juliana Rodrigues (julianamfrodrigues) | 1748 comments I surprised myself, I thought it would be harder than it really has been, not that it is as reading in portuguese, but I'm managing quite well. Actually, better than reading in norwegian, even after studying a lot I can't read a novel in norwegian yet. :(

message 142: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments well, spanish and portuguese are both latin based, so yeah, they're close. norwegian is... another world :D

message 143: by Lau (new)

Lau Maia | 0 comments Oh yeah Norwegian must be tough, I met a finish girl once and listening up close and trying to learn a few words, it was hard.
