The Enchanted (prison?)

Has anyone read this book? How realistic do you think the prison is portrayed in the book?

How amazing that the author replied to you!
I think I have the same naive-ness as the original poster! I am also from Canada and my impressions of American prisons are from things like Oz the TV series and The Orange is the New Black. I'm sure these are exaggerated some but it's a great question to ask. I wondered about the food situation quite a lot too.
If you are interested in the topic there are some intriguing documentaries that talk about the prison industry and the drug industry. They are a little conspiracy theory type but still very eye opening.

Hi Linda, why do you ask? I had no preconceived idea of how prison should be portrayed. I thought the author took me to this prison and made it very real.
I think prisons in Canada and the US differ quite a lot. As well, whether you are sentenced to two years less a day or more than that greatly affects the quality of the place you go.
Hello Linda,
I saw your question. I'm the author, and much of the novel was inspired by my work as a death penalty investigator. I spend a lot of time in prisons. They vary in conditions, but aside from the narrator's fantastical visions, much in the novel I recognize in my work.
