Zaz | 2969 comments Week 6 will help you decrease your huge reading list, starting by a good book.
For those reading in order: February 5- February 11, 2016.

To discuss the book, don't forget to add it in the A-Z folders or join the existing discussion.

Elise (theblackhorizon) I'm reading Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, which currently has a 4.45 rating.

I usually don't put much stock in ratings, as half the time my tastes run counter to popular opinion (for example, I hated The Name of the Wind and The Martian, and loved low-rated books like The Orange Eats Creeps and Outline). Reviews are much more helpful to me than overall ratings.

message 3: by Raeann (last edited Jan 01, 2016 01:01PM) (new)

Raeann (broadwaypants) | 100 comments I read Lobster Is the Best Medicine: A Collection of Comics About Friendship, which was probably rated this high because it's a newer release. It currently has a 4.58 rating.

There were actually two books on my TBR that were rated higher, but I didn't pick them because the first (at a 5.00 rating) only had one rating, so obviously that's not a very good indication of whether the book is actually good or not. The other I could not find in any library system (I checked twice), so I decided to go with book three instead.

Normally I don't pay attention to ratings, so this was kind of fun! The book was very good. Cute and short. I gave it five stars. :)

message 4: by Adam (last edited Jan 02, 2016 12:21AM) (new)

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 1197 comments I'm going to read The Green Mile. It has 4.40 rating but around 15,000 ratings.

I have a lot of books with higher scores but most of the have less than ten ratings.

I usually only pay attention to the rating as a last minute warning of what I might face. Sometimes I'll be super excited about a book only to find a bunch of one stars hiding around. Not that that will stop me.

message 5: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | -19 comments For this topic its going to be Gowns Of The Haunted it has a 5.0 rating.actually started it tomorrow since I'm doing # TBRTakedown 3.0 which starts on the 4th of this month and ends on the 10th.

message 6: by Marta (last edited Jan 03, 2016 12:29PM) (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I started The Name of the Wind. Ended up getting two copies for Christmas, and my husband already has finished it and is eager to discuss it, which is great. Average rating: 4.55, with over 300 thousand ratings, that's pretty good!

I only look at ratings when I don't really know anything about a book. This came highly recommended from my brother-in-law. Only saw the rating after I sorted to see the highest rated for the challenge :) This did help raise the priority, though.

message 7: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | -19 comments just finished Gowns Of The Haunted by Anette Darbyshire Gowns Of The Haunted and loved it give it five stars.

message 8: by EllenZReads (new)

EllenZReads | 172 comments For this week I hope to finish a book I started last year for a book group, The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics

- What is the current average rating of the book?

4.29 is the average rating. I might actually have something higher rated on my to-read shelf, but this one came to mind first.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
It depends...like Marta wrote above, I mainly use ratings when I know nothing about a book. If I've heard about it from a friend or know something about the author, that is more important to me than the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ rating. There have been some highly rated books on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ that I thought were terrible. :)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments What are you reading this week?
My Soul to Keep
My Soul to Keep by V.J. Prucha

-What is the current average rating of the book?
5.0 (9 rating and 7 reviews)

Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
I never use ratings as a determining base for picking my books. Typically when I'm about 1/2 way through the book I'll start looking at ratings and reviews to get a quick check on how others felt about the book.

message 10: by Elise (new)

Elise F (elise_literaryhabitat) | -7 comments * What are you reading this week?

The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss

* What is the current average rating of the book?

4.57

* Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?

It can influence me putting something on my "to read" list, but if I want to read something, I don't usually look at the rating before starting. Loving or hating a book is too subjective!

message 11: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I finished the The Name of the Wind and on to The Wise Man's Fear. Fun books! Long though, so now my plans for reading other books are shot, but that's ok.

Marleen (marleenanna) | 28 comments - What are you reading this week?
I'm reading The Nightingale

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.53 with more than 100.000 ratings

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
I usually check out the rating and then scroll down to read some reviews. Then I decide if I'm adding it to my TBR or not. Unless it's a book I've heard a lot about already, in that case I just add it right away!

message 13: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 1946 comments Me too on the Nightingale! I'm reading that as well! I'm close to done and don't think I'll rate it as high (it was 4.53 when I picked it too).

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
Almost never unless it's a book by someone I never heard of, I might look but it won't make or break my decision.

message 14: by Joann (new)

Joann I'm reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett . Seems like I'm one of the few who hasn't read it :).
It has a rating of 4.45, with over 1.3 million reviews.
I definitely pay attention to how a book is rated. Usually will never read anything rated under a 3.

message 15: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Tattersall (mothgender) | 28 comments I read All Manner of Dark Things: Collected Bits and Pieces. It has a rating of 5.0, and only 7 ratings. I never really read books based solely on their ratings. Usually I just read what I feel like reading from the descriptions.

I haven't read it either - but it's on my list for the book about books!

Lit_With_Britt (brocmo1) - What are you reading this week?
Smoke by Ellen Hopkins

- What is the current average rating of the book?
The current rating is 4.32 with a little over 6000 ratings.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
No, I do not read books based off ratings.

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.41

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
A little bit. I don't read anything really, really low rated. But a rating is only one factor in the books I pick.

message 19: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments What are you reading this week? Redwall by Brian Jacques
What is the current average rating of the book? 4.08, but I initially had either the whole series or a collection on my TBR list, and that had a rating of 5.0, from memory. I chose the first from the series to read.
Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book? I sometimes consider the ratings when adding an unknown book to my TBR list. There are books that I will read, or add, regardless of what other people have rated it.

- What is the current average rating of the book?

I usually look at a few positive and a few negative reviews before choosing a book.

Undone

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.24 with 16,371 rating

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
I do not, I usually just read something that sounds interesting to me. I have had this book since July 26th 2009 and have never read it, so I am looking forward to reading it.

Part of my challenge this year was to not buy any books, but to use the library and the books that I have not read but bought to fill all of the categories. So far so good.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
To an extent but don't generally get hung up on the rating as long as it is more than two stars. If lower then I might wonder what the reviews were saying

Julia (_mj_howard) Factotum (Monster Blood Tattoo, #3) by D.M. Cornish

"Monsterblood Tattoo #3: FACTOTUM" by David Cornish

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.26 when I chose it. I read the first two books of this series last year and as the highest rated on my TBR list I am really looked forward to finishing the series and it didn't disappoint.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
No

The Name of the Wind

What is the current average rating of the book?
4.55 stars

Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
I usually do not pay attention to the ratings when choosing a book, unless the rating is really bad. Each person brings different experiences with them when reading, these experiences influences how they view the story. Reading is a very personal thing.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter #7) by J.K. Rowling
- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.59
- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
I look at them after I've chosen a book or when I know nothing else about it, but I don't trust them too much. However,I really like to see the books that others are reading for this week.

message 26: by Deb (new)

Deb | 372 comments This week I am reading A Storm of Swords which is currently rated 4.54.

I do pay attention to ratings and reviews but I've never read a book only because it had high ratings. And I've never not read a book because it had lower ratings.

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.2* from approx. 1.5 million ratings - the highest * book on my TBR list
- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
Not really, I like to give a book a fair chance

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments - What are you reading this week?
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. As a fantasy fan I'm really excited to discover this new epic world. It is HUGE though, so I'm listening to it, but the audiobook is 45 hours long! That's a lot of driving hours.
- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.62 with 100k ratings! It is the highest rated of my entire books, read and unread.
- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
If I stumble on a book I never heard about, I look at the rating and then read the summary to see if it can be interesting. For books that are recommended, it usually doesn't matter.

Hi Elizabeth! I'm one of those reading The Name of the Wind and really enjoying it. I was a little intimidated by its length but am finding it an absorbing read and not worrying about what page I'm on. Now I'm planning to read The Wise Man's Fear for week 23 and The Slow Regard of Silent Things 2.5 for between the numbers week! Can't wait!

L | 127 comments - What are you reading this week? - For week 6 I will be reading Stoner by John Williams

- What is the current average rating of the book? - it is currently rated at an average of 4.26 based on 35,704 ratings. I am optimistic although one of my friends also reading it at the mo says she is finding it slow so I guess we'll see.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book? - ratings can be a factor and I am increasingly checking out reviews in advance because I feel that I am simply too old to waste any of my precious reading time on rubbishy books. However I do very much value personal recommendations from friends with similar taste to me, but I admit that occasionally I do just buy a book on impulse based on the blurb.

message 32: by JoJo (new)

JoJo Kirkman (jojo2013) | 315 comments - What are you reading this week? If This Is a Woman: Inside Ravensbruck - Hitler's Concentration Camp for Women by Sarah Helm. (My highest rating was The Last Chapter by Lyn Squire but I am unable to get a copy at the moment)
- What is the current average rating of the book? 4.45
- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book? No

message 33: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Lisa, Stoner is really wonderful, but yes it is slow. It's not a page-turner by any stretch of the imagination, and it's not an exciting book but I loved it. It's definitely not one I'd recommend to everyone but it has certainly stayed with me.

message 34: by L (new)

L | 127 comments I am keeping an open mind! I don't need a book to be a rollercoaster ride to impress me and from what I have heard Stoner is thoughtfully written, so I am quietly hopeful.

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 539 comments What are you reading this week?
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

What is the current average rating of the book?
It's rated at 4.30 with 278, 859 ratings so far.

Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
Nope not usually. If a book looks good and sounds good I will add it to my list! The only thing the ratings might do is stop me from buying the book before I read it.

message 36: by Angela (new)

Angela | 95 comments This week I am reading The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.22

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
It's not necessarily the first thing I look at, but it is important. If a book is less than 3 stars, I really really have to want to read it for some reason in order to pick it up.

message 37: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3230 comments What are you reading this week? The Nightingale

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling
- What is the current average rating of the book?

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
I never go off of the ratings. Lower rated books may take me longer to pick up, but only if i happen to notice them. I honestly don't pay much attention.

message 40: by Clara (new)

Clara (lostinmylibrary) What are you reading this week?
Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead
What is the current average rating of the book?
4.46. It's actually not currently the highest rated on my TBR (because of all the to-be-published ones with 5.0 ratings and because I added The Name of the Wind after I chose this), but it was when I chose it, so I'm going with it.
Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
Not usually. Sometimes, an especially low rating will make me skip a book that I was hesitant about anyway, or an especially high rating will make me want to read a book that I wasn't too sure about, but I don't usually pay attention to it.

message 41: by Sara (new)

Sara | 3 comments For this week I'm reading The voice of the wind, by Francine Rivers. I sometimes read reviews on the books I'm interested into but I try not to be too influenced by them in a sense or the other. I think it's nice to read reviews after you've actually read the book as a sort of ideal discussion with fellow readers.
I controlled which one of the books on my tbr list had the highest review and I found out that it was this book by Francine Rivers with a solid 4.6 based on thousands of ratings. It is a christian romance set in the ancient Rome. I bought it some time away but never even begun to read. I was curious about it because in that time I had read some christian romance all western and contemporaries; I liked them not for the religious aspect, about which to be sincere I am not really interested, but because I found the love stories quite nice and soothing. So I wanted to try something in this genre but in a different kind of setting.

message 42: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Lindsey | 26 comments I'm reading Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus: A Devout Muslim Encounters Christianity for this week.

It has 4.5 stars with 3,713 reviews. I rarely use overall ratings to select books, but I do take the rating of friends seriously. Many of my friends have read this book and rated it with 5 stars, so I am curious enough to pick it up for this week.

message 43: by Jake (new)

Jake Kropik (jkjkjk15) I'm reading Scarlet, book 2 in the Lunar Chronicles :)))

4.35? (It isn't the best rating, but others are either books I don't own yet or books in a series I'm not to yet)

I rarely ever read books based on ratings!

What is the current average rating of the book? 4.57 There were a few with a higher number rating but very few reviews.

Yes, I tend to avoid books under 3*. However, I look more at the ratings in the reviews that at the GR average rating, I find them more helpful with a comment.

Katie (katenumber8030) | 70 comments - What are you reading this week?
I read A Lover's Vow by Brenda Jackson.

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.52 with 498 ratings, not only the highest on my TBR, but highest on my read list, too.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
I usually initially choose based on recommendations and awards, then use the ratings help determine readability and whether a book is worth my time.

message 48: by Karen (new)

Karen Rashid For this week I read Brandon Sanderson's The Rithmatist. It wasn't the highest rated book on my list - that is another Brandon Sanderson book The Way of Kings. I choose to read the Rithmatist because it is highest rated book on my list that I already own. I enjoyed it even more than I was expecting. To be honest I was excited to read something from this author after reading so many great reviews but the premise had me a bit concerned. I mean evil chalk creatures.... I was worried that this might be a bit too hard to swallow. Turns out that this world sucked me right in - evil chalk creatures and all. Five Stars!
