Jess | 3721 comments I know this question is hard, but what is everyone's favorite UF series?

message 2: by Shanon (new)

Shanon (boban) My favorite UF series is Weather Warden by Rachel Caine - such a great, unique series. I love the twists & turns throughout the story. I am constantly shocked by what is going on - definately not a predictable series.

Now if you were to ask me for a list of my favorites I'd have a really hard time ranking all the rest. But my top favorite is easy (until I read the next awesome series)

message 3: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) That's a hard one! I'm leaning toward The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine. I love the Sookie books, but I consider them more mysteries with the occasional good sex scene with a supe of one strain or another, than UF.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 437 comments This is the tricky one. I think my favorite would vary based upon my mood. Today, I'll say Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews - but tomorrow it may be something different.

message 5: by Jessi (new)

Jessi (jessim) Mine you be The House of Night series by PC Cast. I love those books!! Of course there are several others I cold place here with them....

message 6: by K (new)

K | 51 comments I think the Mercy Thompson series is my favorite. Mercy is a great heroine and I fell in love with the supporting characters, who are all unique and complex as well.

message 7: by Harley (new)

Harley (harleybrewpup) I think mine has to be Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris

message 8: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments I love pretty much everything mentioned so far!

I love Sookie Stackhouse, but I'm most psyched lately about Karen Chance's books, both the Cassie Palmer and Dorina Basarab series.

message 9: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Hands down the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.

I have lots of other favs as well, but this one tops the list!

message 10: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 77 comments I'm going to have to go with the Connor Grey series by Mark del Franco. Although the Marla Mason series by T.A. Pratt is a pretty close second.

message 11: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I think I might have to go with Sookie Stackhouse... I'm not as big a fan of UF as PNR, but I definitely love sookie!

message 12: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) | 292 comments So again it's hard from me to choose and I'm still a little fuzzy on the dif between UF & PNR, but I would have to say Anita Blake series if I understand the definitions, followed closely by Sookie.....

message 13: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Susan, just think of it this way:
PNR is one couple's HEA per book. UF is no defined happy ending. In each BDB, Dark Hunter, etc. one couple comes out of it together, guy and girl find soulmate. In Anita Blake, Dark Huntress, Sookie Stackhouse and so on, we're looking at a string of relationships or the continuing adventures of a particular couple--the pairing off isn't key, it's just another aspect of the story.

message 14: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) | 292 comments Thanks Michelle! That helps!

message 15: by Mel (last edited Jul 20, 2009 12:14PM) (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1384 comments Definetly the Cassie Palmer and Dorina Basarab series by Karen Chance.
I also like Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series, although I'm not completely in love with those books (just can't put my finger on why though)they do put the URBAN in urban fantasy.

message 16: by Eloise (new)

Eloise Definately Jennifer Rardin Her Jaz Parks series rocks! I love her humour and attention to detail.

message 17: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 60 comments Love Laurell K. Hamilton
her Anita Blake series

message 18: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Eloise wrote: "Definately Jennifer Rardin Her Jaz Parks series rocks! I love her humour and attention to detail. "

I agree that's a great series. But she needs to resolve the love issue going on!! Her dragging it out over 6 books has gotten annoying! I still keep reading though because I love the books

your not in love with it because the main character is annoying...lol

Mel (mel_b) | 1384 comments Kyle wrote: "your not in love with it because the main character is annoying...lol ..."

Yeah she can be pretty annoying can't she? I must say I liked her better in the 6th book (the Outlaw Demon Wails). I haven't read White Witch Black Curse yet as I heard it's a bit of a series filler and I'd rather wait for the 8th book to be published so I can read that right after.
I was really annoyed by Rachel in A Fistful of Charms. She was constantly trying to do stuff the most illogical, difficult, problem causing way possible. She would say: 'hmmm, maybe I should not do this, cause this would be baaaad' and then go right along do it. Gaaah!

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 132 comments Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series for me. I know its only on book 4 but that woman can write!

As far as content and action and awesome characters go she is #1 for me for a UF series :)

I agree!!

Jamie ~ Bad Boy Inspector (jamie_badboyinspector) | 18 comments Humm that is a hard question. I would have to say Patricia Brigg's Mercy series or Adrian Phoenix's The Guild Hunter series. I also love Sookie and Rachel Morgan series (even though she drives me nuts sometimes also).

message 24: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lkksu) | 10 comments If I had to choose one UF series, I guess it would be the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison. Although I love the Mercy series and the Night Huntress series, the Rachel Morgan series take you on such a journey when you're reading it. Yes, at times Rachel can get on your nerves, but the characters that surround her are great. Also, the books in this series are not wrapped up in a neat & tidy bow at the end.

message 25: by K (new)

K | 51 comments I think Rachel has gotten a lot better throughout the series. It took me 3 or 4 attempts to read Dead Witch Walking and I didn't run out and grab the second one for a long time. Once I finally got further into it, I felt like Rachel became less and less annoying, I really like the series now.

message 26: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) Lynn wrote: "If I had to choose one UF series, I guess it would be the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison. Although I love the Mercy series and the Night Huntress series, the Rachel Morgan series take you on ..."

I have read all the Rachel Morgan books and can't for the life of me tell you why. I haven't liked any of them and the only character that I like is Jenks!

message 27: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) Melodie wrote: "Lynn wrote: "If I had to choose one UF series, I guess it would be the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison. Although I love the Mercy series and the Night Huntress series, the Rachel Morgan series..."

I only read the first one and had no wnat to read the others. though I'll admit I love Jenks.

message 28: by Mel (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1384 comments Although Rachel can be annoying at times, the series ís pretty ok! The world described by Harrison is so real! Some of the scenes read like scripts, there's so much attention to detail (in a non-annoying way).
The secondary characters like Al, Jenks and Trent are really fun to read about.
To me, the quality of the books differs a lot. I have a sort of hate-love realtionship with the series though I must say I love the last one I read (#6).
Ofcourse, it doesn't come anywhere near to my favorit UF-series (I can't stress it enough) the Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance.

message 29: by Starling (new)

Starling | 176 comments I've never read the series by Karen Chance. Tell me something about it.

message 30: by Mel (last edited Aug 10, 2009 01:44PM) (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1384 comments Oh well.. where to begin? Karen Chance has two series set in the Cassie Palmer universe, one about heroine Cassie Palmer en the second, a spin off if you will, about Dorina Basarab.

Karen Chance's stories are fast paced and action packed. The world building is wonderful, the stories are well built and the best thing is: the books are really humoristic.
The stories are exciting, serious, sometimes quite volatile, sometimes heartbreaking, but Chance always manages to keep the funny edge.
The books are urban fantasy but there definitely is hotness and romance (nothing cheesy but also nothing in LKH style, just perfect amount).

The Cassie series has 4 books out: Touch the Dark, Claimed by Shadow, Embrace the Night and Curse the Dawn. The first book was somewhat confusing at times: a lot going on at the same time, very much info, but once you get into it it's a thriling ride. Chance has improved a lot since then and the books keep getting better and better.
I absolutely love the Cassie series (Pritkin anyone?) but I might even like Dorina more. After the first book Midnight's Daughter, the second: Death's Mistress will be coming out in january.
There's a thread in this group (Curse the Dawn thread) which is counting 10 pages (and we're still going strong) in which we discuss the books to shreds. I really love Karen Chance and, as she's not as widely known as Kim Harrison, LKH, etc, feel I must spread the word :)
Hope you'll give the books a try.

message 31: by Starling (new)

Starling | 176 comments Thank you. I've added Touch the Dark to my to-buy list. Amazon let me read the first few pages, and I liked what I saw.

message 32: by Mel (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1384 comments Oh great: if you finish the books, come join us at the thread! A lot of spoilers so you'll have to have Curse the Dawn finished.
Let me know what you think of the books :)

message 33: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Starling, hope you love Karen Chance's series! They fast became my favorites. Beware, the first chapter or two of Cassie book 1 can be a bit of an info dump, but then it seriously takes off and doesn't stop!

message 34: by Starling (new)

Starling | 176 comments I've bought the first book, and a few others I've had on my wish list. My excuse? I needed sheets and the set I bought two weeks ago were wonderful, so I bought another set. And I'm sticking to my story!

PS The sheets really are wonderful and scary cheap. Bought the second set when I saw how well they came out of the dryer.

message 35: by Betelgeuze (new)

Betelgeuze | 158 comments I can't choose between Mike Carey's Felix Castor series and Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. The Felix Castor series is darker and has a stronger mystery component, while The Dresden Files is lighter and has a stronger focus on magic. Which series i like the most depends on my mood.

Shannon (Savhage Temptrest) (savhagetemptress) | 85 comments Heather wrote: "I think mine has to be Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris"

She's my fave too!

message 37: by Emily (new)

Emily | 4 comments Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews is my all time fav. I do love Karen Chance's books as well.

message 38: by Ria Lize (new)

Ria Lize (rialize) | 18 comments I love the Kate Daniels series by ilona Andrews too. ^^

message 39: by Purple (new)

Purple (purpletan) | 14 comments Just one? It has to be my very first UF, that is the Weather Warden Series..but its so close to Mercedes Thompson..and then there's the Fever series.. (sighs).

message 40: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1 comments The Dresden Files are number one for me. I used to love Anita Blake but there is only so much sex I can handle without a real storyline.

message 41: by FlibBityFLooB (new)

FlibBityFLooB | 0 comments I admit to still having a ton to read for comparison, but my current favorite remains NIGHT HUNTRESS series. :)

message 42: by Dave (new)

Dave Moore Although I haven't read all of the authors mentioned here, Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files" is my latest favorite 'discovery'. Butcher is a true craftsman with a mastery of literary devices akin to King. He uses words the way an artist uses color to set a texture...be it dark, sarcastic, sardonic, or just humorous. I look forward to reading several of the others mentioned in these forums. After all, the beauty of books is that no two people tell the same story the same way. Happy reading to all.

message 43: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I'm just bumping this up for newer members who haven't seen it yet :)

message 44: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Patricia Briggs Mercy and Omega series.

message 45: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Wow this is a hard question...I think for long standing series it would be Rachel Morgan, Women/Men of the Otherworld, Mercy Thompson and Kitty Norville. For newer series I would say Kate Daniels and Sabina Kane.

That is more than one LOL

message 46: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I think right now my favorite is Kate Daniels, I think I'm obsessed actually.

message 47: by Crystal (new)

Crystal (crys25) | 237 comments I have so many that I'm reading I don't know if I can choose. Kate Daniels is def one of my favorites, Rachel Morgan, Sabina Kane, October Daye, Anita Blake (don't judge me), Sookie Stackhouse, Cassie Palmer and Dory, Black London series by Caitlin Kittredge, KMM's Fever series-I don't know there's a lot of great UF coming out now.

message 48: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (audiobookmel) Anita Blake by Laurell K. Hamilton by far my favorite, but closely followed by Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost. There are many other great UF stories out there.

message 49: by Pam G (new)

Pam G (pgarey) Right now, for me it's a tie with KMM's Fever series, and Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress. I'm still kind of a newbie to this genre and PNR, so there's not a lot of series I've read yet. Most of them are still in TBR/TBLT.

message 50: by Melodie (last edited May 21, 2010 07:44PM) (new)

Melodie (melodieco) I can for sure tell you whose series it isn't.......ROB THURMAN's!! After reading what I've read about the way she disprespects her readers here in this group, you can bet I'll never spend a dime on or read anything else she's written! I read the first Cal Leandros book and thought it was just okay, so no need to go farther!
