Introduce Yourself to the Group - 2016!

I'm Sarah, and I'm from the United States. I enjoy nearly all genres of books, with the exception of horror and most romances.
My goal is to read a minimum of one book each month. Currently, I'm in university, so this book cannot be a required book.
If you have any book recommendations, I'd love to hear from you! Friend request me, as well. I'm looking for a nonfiction book to read at the moment. Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Sarah

What types of nonfiction books have you enjoyed in the past? What sorts of things are you interested in learning about?

My name is Alex. I am from Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA. My favorite genre is mystery/thriller, but I also really like memoirs and true crime.
I found your group when I was looking at a member's GR page to find new books to add, and saw it.
My reading goal would be to branch out a bit. I want to read some classics or other genres I usually wouldn't. I am a creature of habit though, so we'll see! ;)

I've enjoyed philosophical, historical, and biographical books. I'm also interested in learning more about political issues on both on national and international level. Regardless of political stance, I'd be interested in learning the different views of prominent political figures throughout history and in the present day.

Sarah, have you read Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln? It's one of my faves.

A couple recommendations:
Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China. This is the memoir/history of a family who is well-positioned in Chinese history to cover (in three generations) the end of the warlord period, communism under Mao, and the author's own experience of being one of the first Chinese women to be allowed to study abroad in the re-opening of China under Deng Xiaoping.
I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban. This book isn't perfect, but Malala's story is powerful and I learned a lot about the history and current state of affairs in Pakistan.
And, if you're interested in larger-than-life figures in technology, I'd recommend reading either Steve Jobs or Elon Musk: Inventing the Future. Jobs and Musk are similar enough that you can read about either and feel pretty satisfied, unless you're super interested.

Cassandra, thank you for the recommendations. I have Team of Rivals! The other four are books I'd be very interested in reading. Thank you again!

Thanks, Kara! I'm planning on reading that next.

I like to read mystery/thriller and YA books, but I won't say no to other books. In fact I end up liking most books, that were recommendet to me, although they were not in my favourite genre.
Actually I was looking for a challange für 2016, and I ended up here xD
If I had the time my goal would be to read 100 books. Since I don't, I think I'll stick with 40-50 this year. Any recommednations are welcome :)
And feel free to add me as a friend :)

Normally I enjoy either YA Dystopias or YA LGBT+ as genres but I'm open to reading anything. I am an aspiring author myself so the more inspiration I can get the better.
My goal for this year is just one book a month but I will hope for more. I will have to borrow most of the books I read as I've been banned from buying too many books to add the the growing collection.

Welcome :) I'm from Norway, not that far off :)
I love Dystopias, any particular you recommend?

//Anna

Kevin, I'm like you. I usually have 1 audio book, 1 fiction book, and 1 non-fiction book going at the same time. I find the same thing with Audio books, if I had to read them on the page, I wouldn't finish them. Right now I have a whole bunch going at the same time.
Welcome to the group, and I hope you get to your goal.

Have never gotten into audio books. Maybe I should give one a shot though.

I'm listening to my first audiobook now (that's if I don't count the story tapes from childhood). It's Jack London's White Fang, read by John Lee. I picked it up from my library's very limited selection.
I'd be interested in some recommendations, too.

I love audiobooks and so does my computer of late. I can't play them on my computer at the moment because when I do the middle piece on the CD plate which holds it in place pops out of its socket and jams the cd in the slot. Not helpful!

I got hooked on audiobooks back when XM had their Book Radio channel. Years after they axed the channel, I found the Overdrive Media app for my cellphone, and rediscovered "reading" while driving. I've read 93 books so far this year, and probably 88 have been audiobooks. I just recently stole my wife's Kindle, so now I have access to ebooks from the library, as well.

Hi Patricia! I use the Overdrive Media app, both on my cellphone and PC, to access ebooks and audiobooks from my library. My local library gives me access to digital material available from any library in my home state of Maryland. In addition, I pay $27 yearly for an out of state membership at Fairfax County, Virginia library, and that gives me access to their digital material.
Living in Belgium, I'm not sure how that would work for you...but its all done over the internet, so I don't see why you couldn't access libraries outside of your country if you chose to. You may even have access to enough digital material within your own country to keep you busy for years.
I've been using Overdrive for about a year and a half, and never had any problems. It has always been safe and stable for me. In addition to Overdrive, there are other platforms available for digital material...
The 3M Cloud Library, Axis360, and OneClickDigital are said to be quite popular as well. It may take a little detective work, but there is a vast amount of digital material available.
Note: I have NO connections to any of the above apps.

Hi Zara,
The Overdrive Media app would help your situation, as well. You could stop using CDs, and just download the digital audio.

I did actually find a few audiobooks via the library in my hometown (abroad), so I'll have another look on their 'shelves' once I've finished the current book. I have some trouble concentrating when listening to a reading, so I'll see if this new discovery sticks with me definitely.
Thanks, Blagica, for your recommendations! I'll see if I can find 'Lovely bones' via the library. King might be too spooky for me ;-)
I'm curious, do you, the challenge group members, add audiobooks onto your goodreads shelf?

Patricia, the Overdrive app does not require data once you've downloaded the book to the app. It does require quite a bit of data to download, so I do all my downloading over wifi. I keep 4-6 titles on my cellphone so i don't have to burn my data downloading a book when wifi isn't available. Once my lending period is up, the app will automatically return the book to the library, but I always return them as soon as I complete them.

I'm currently reading the third book of the Millennium Series "The a Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest", "Mildred Pierce" by James M. Cain (I intend to later watch the HBO miniseries, which I heard is exquisite) and re-reading Harry Potter (just started "The Chamber of Secrets") - it's been a whole new experience, there's so much I didn't pay attention to as a child/teenager.
My reading goal is of 40 books for 2016, I'd appreciate any recommendation!

Will do so, thanks!

This past year I worked on the 2015 PopSugar reading challenge and when the 2016 list was published, I sought a goodreads group that was completing the challenge and so here I am---looking forward to meeting people here and sharing book recommendations.

I'm doing the complete 1001 books you must ... Started this year, so far 41 down ^^ maybe we can team up on some buddy reads next year to get some of those classics read? I knnow some of us are reading Shirley in January, so feel free to join in or on any other for that sake :)

I am new to goodreads and still trying out things here...
I love to read and the major reason to join Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and the group especially was that over the years I realised I read less and less due to work pressures, family etc. etc.
I am hoping the group and my challenge(still working on it!) will help me get back to reading!
I love trying out new books/genres but mostly read fiction, biographies, mystery novels and anything anyone recommends :)
looking forward to meeting new people, reading new books and sharing experiences with you guys!!
happy reading. :)

I read my first Indian novel this year: The Home and the World, loved it!
This is a great group:) have fun on goodreads!:)

I don't like family sagas, too violent stories (abuse, alcoholism, etc) and romance. I mostly read fiction but I sometimes add non-fiction books to my list.
You can add me as a friend if you wish :)
