Leslie | 16369 comments Since the 2015 BINGO challenge was so popular, we will be doing another BINGO challenge in 2016. The new square is a bit more challenging but remember that all you need for a successful challenge is to complete a row, column, or diagonal (just as in real bingo) by the end of the year 2016!

Feel free to post about your progress here in this thread or keep track in your own 2016 challenge thread.

EXTREME CHALLENGE: Complete the entire square (once or multiple times!)

Remember that the challenge doesn't begin until New Year's Day. I know how quickly our members get started on these things so the square won't be posted until December 30th!

You don't have to do the entire square! :D

But maybe that square will inspire you to read an AAB group poet!

Myst | 494 comments Same name as an ancestor...so if I had an ancestor named Anna Patricia Smith, I could read a book by Patricia Cornwell or L.J. Smith?

The book based on a play might be difficult...I can think of more books that were turned into plays...

Edit: for the book based on a play...could any permutation of Shakespeare work?

message 11: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Oh, I forgot to mention that a play would work for "book based on a play". However, here are some examples of books based on plays:

Medea by Christa Wolf
Black Coffee by Agatha Christie (I think that this adaptation was done by someone else after her death)
P.S. Your Cat is Dead by James Kirkwood Jr.
A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley (modernized retelling of Shakespeare's King Lear)

If we can do it this way, it will work for me. My ancestors fled Eastern Europe and came to America through Ellis Island. Many of us have no idea how our surnames were spelled in the old country. But, Eva, Louise, Julia and Anna I can find. ;-)

Either first or last name is fine so both those examples Myst gave would work.

Portia wrote: "Can one book fill two squares? The Odyssey of KP2: An Orphan Seal, a Marine Biologist, and the Fight to Save a Species"

No, each square must be a different book. Sorry!

Leslie | 16369 comments I am keeping track in my 2016 Personal Challenge thread. I will occasionally post an update here too though.

Don't forget, if you join the challenge on the group homepage, you need to make a special bingo shelf. I called mine (with stunning originality) bingo-2016 but you can choose any name you want. Also, the books on this shelf must have their finished reading date in 2016 - that generally happens automatically when you mark a book as done but feel free to post here if you run into problems.

There are several ways to get someone else to choose a book for you. One way is to join one of our periodic Recommendation Swaps - I think that the next one will be in Feb. Another is to just ask here or in one of the other GoodReads groups or use a Book of the Month for one of your groups. Or it could be a book someone gave you as a gift or you could ask a friend, family member or local librarian to recommend a book.

Betty (bellemercier) | 23 comments Thanks Leslie- that's simple enough! :)

Myst | 494 comments For "local author", how local does it have to be? Same state? Within approx 75 miles of your city?

The only author I read that I know lives in the same state as I do is about a 4 hour drive away.

We are leaving each participant to decide for themselves how close "local" is as finding a qualifying author is a distinctly different proposition for someone in London compared to someone in rural Nunavut province territory in Canada!!

message 49: by Myst (new)

Myst | 494 comments Isn't it Nunavut territory? NWT and YKT are both territories...NWT was split into 2 to make Nunavut 17ish years ago. (Not to be picky or anything ;) I was living in Canada at the time so I had a very brief - 30 words or less lecture about the new territory before returning to regular activities.)

I can work with that to find an author now that I don't have to stray too far from my preferred genres to find a 'local' author.
