Me and my friend (project partner) haven't started this book yet, but are starting it tonight. Does anybody have any advice that could prepare us for the book? Does anybody have anything to say about the book?

(Not really a spoiler, but gives you a hint of what it's like)

There is swearing, mature content (Dorothy dresses slutty) and hints of romance. There is a bit of violence, as you can tell from the title, but it is definitely not so bad that you'll cringe.

The writer of a book begins the tour of the storyworld by giving information about the character and his or her surroundings. An example of this in the book Dorothy Must Die is how Danielle Paige, the author, gives details of Amy Gumm’s past in the first few paragraphs of the story. Beginning on page one, Amy explains her ninth birthday and how Madison Pendleton has been treating her like trash ever since.

The novel is written in first person
I think the writer chose this particular point of view because the reader is able to see how Amy (main character) thinks about the whole situation of landing in Oz. Also, there is a feeling of unknowing because we never know what will happen next since Amy has never been to Oz and we will never know why people keep running away since she doesn’t know either.

An author can establish any given mood at any scene of a piece of writing. The mood is supposed to go with the characters and their situations so that the readers can feel what the characters do. An example of this in the book Dotohy must die is when Indigo and Amy walk on the yellow brick road and find Ollie, the talking monkey, Indigo urges Amy to keep going and leave th emomkey be. Amy refuses and Indigo immediatly gets worried. She starts moving a bit faster and looks around as though someone would catch them. The mood went from calm to extremely ominous which matched how the characters felt. A writer can establish a mood by using precise words to describe setting or anything else.

In Dorothy must die, tone is used a lot. As Amy Gumm wakes up in the emerald castle, she is met face to face with the ruler of Oz, Dorothy. The princess starts to question her about her own appearance and Amy gives positive feedback to everything she's asked. This soon leads to the bringing up of how Amy got there. She replies with the honest answer, which is a tornado took her from Kansas. Dorothy’s tone then drops from happy to grimm. The writer establishes this tone by changing Dorothy’s mood entirely.

Amy sees many and experiences many things in the book that she wouldn’t in real life, making it fantasy. Some factors are that she sees the mythical characters from the old movie that this book is based off of. She also experiences many new things such as being locked in a dungeon, transporting and even talking to a monkey. Some real factors in the book are all in the beginning of the book and those are the facts that Amy is a teenage girl being bullied in school. Overall, this book is obviously fantasy because of the many unreal factors that go on throughout the book.

Danielle Paige uses ambiguity in Dorothy must die by leaving important information unclear and vague. She uses this technique by starting the thought of a character but leaving it unfinished. For example, when Glamora was first seen in the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked’s meeting place, Amy thought she was Glinda, the now evil witch of the South. The chapter is left off with the few words “No rest for the Wicked, is there Amy?� from the witch which leaves Amy scared for her safety. This leaves the reader questioning the same things as Amy. This is why a writer uses ambiguity in a story.

In the book Dorothy Must Die the story mainly takes place in the land of Oz. There is little magic for the people to use and all of the people are scared and negative. Some man made predators are the overhears and corn. Overhears are birds that have ears connected to them so they can hear what people are talking about. The corn is dangerous because it is black and if you try and touch its vines will rap around you and try to suffocate you.

Amy must go through many difficult decisions in the book Dorothy must die. For example, Amy must decide whether she should go with mombi or stay and fight in the dungeon. She Decides to go with mombi. By doing this, Amy risks the Possible consequence of Mombi being evil or trying to harm her. The actual consequence is that Amy is now an official member of the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked

Mundane actions done by Amy Gumm contribute to our understanding of her storyworld. One example of this is when Amy falls asleep on her bed while thinking about what her bed must be made of. The mundane activity is falling asleep. We learn Amy’s new world is better than where she used to live. It is magical because the bed is the most comfortable bed she had ever slept on. Overall, our understanding of this storyworld is more clear from the basic, mundane activities the characters do.

One action possible because of setting in Dorothy must die is magic. The setting of Oz makes this possible because the land actually contains magic. When Amy first joined the revolutionary order of the wicked, she had to learn magic. This was new to her because in her world, magic isn't possible. She eventually learned how thanks to the circumstances and is now a very powerful girl. In her home, none of this would be possible but with the newer setting of Oz, it is.

We believe that the theme and author's message is: You are never alone when facing your troubles.

The ending in Dorothy must die is very powerful. It is a powerful ending because it leaves the book very uncertain in the end. As Amy is being flown away by Maude and Ollie, there are many factors left unresolved for the next novels. For example, Amy doesn't know where the other members of the revolutionary order of the wicked are. She also never killed Dorothy in this novel, so the readers don't know how long or difficult the journey will be for her.
