Bryan Coburn | 3 comments Hello, My name is Bryan. A few years back I wrote my first novel. The theme is about a virus similar to the one the world is experiencing now. It is very strange and somewhat unfortunate to see the fictional topic of my book coming true. The book is based on an Ontario ski resort.

Raymond Cushing | 5 comments Hi, my name is Raymond Cushing. I've been a fan of Canadian literature for a long, long time. I started with Stephen Leacock, Mordecai Richler, Farley Mowatt, Milton Acorn, and others. I look forward to reading the discussions here.

message 607: by Karin (last edited Nov 18, 2020 10:50AM) (new)

Karin | 170 comments Hi, I'm Karin (that's like Car inn, not Karen). I was born and mostly raised in BC, but spent about six months in Saskatchewan back in the dark ages (my dad was born & raised there in Rosthern) and later six years in Ontario. But I did what I swore I never would (love does funny things to us) and moved permanently to the States after I married an American. My dad took us out of Canada as he finished his residency and then later did one year of a second one so that he could do all of the local non-forensic autopsies so they didn't have to be sent to the city via ferry.

Since I just finished an intense, six month reading game I am not going to jump into your current challenge, even though I have already read a number of books that would count for your categories. My personal challenge for the rest of 2020 is to get my authors closer to US Demographics before the end of 2020 (I'd read 15 black authors, but that isn't 13.5 percent of the authors I read) and to read the last 3 books I need for this year's Popsugar, which I rarely play. However, if I see some good books here by black Canadian authors AND I can find them in one of my two library systems (we are spoiled in this state and I am able to have a card in the state capitol as well as where I live) then I may add them.

Normally I try to get Canadian authors in, but this challenge was a very difficult one and I am not sure if I got my quota in or not.

So, before I finish what is turning epistolary, I am a bit of an eclectic reader, but at this point in my life I try to greatly limit dark and heavy novels. It's not because I don't care, but it's because I have read so many and was raised to be socially conscious. On the other hand, I realize that there is a need for these since every generation needs something contemporary.

I am not geriatric--my kids are aged 20-25--but I'm not in the flush of youth or very early middle age, either.

J.P. McLean (jpmclean) My favourite genres are urban fantasy and historical fiction, but I'd never turn down a good thriller or comedy. Recommendations much appreciated!

Welcome, JP! I hope some of our members will try reading JP’s own urban fantasy series, beginning with Secret Sky. I have read and enjoyed them all.

Hi, Karin. I share your reluctance to read dark and disturbing matter. I crossed child abuse off my subject list some years ago, and I’m happier for it. Enjoy the group!

Cary (ct_42) | 1 comments Hi!

I grew up in Southern Ontario, but have been living in The States for a long time now. I've been trying to read about all the Canadian places and culture I never got to meet first-hand when I still lived in Canada. Right now especially interested in the maritimes.

Hope to find some good recommendation in this group.

Cam Lang (camlang) | 3 comments Hello!

I am relatively new to GR. I enjoy discovering new books, especially from emerging Canadian authors. I love mysteries, contemporary fiction and any novel that challenges you and makes you think (this means no chick lit or romance).

I'm from Niagara-on-the-Lake and have just self-published my first mystery novel (but I will promote it elsewhere so as not to irk the mods).

Be well and stay safe everyone!

Cam.

Julia (juliaannreads) | 42 comments Hi folks!
I'm Julia, I'm from southern Vancouver Island. I'm a legal researcher/historian. I'll read just about anything put in my hot little hands (which has led to some regrettable choices but also great finds) but I really like history, math (boo hiss, I know), and science for non-fiction and read broadly in fiction, though I do love a cozy mystery and historical fiction.
