Talie | 71 comments @Mj - glad to see you share more about yourself here. I look forward to hearing what you think about the new lists for the Giller and Man Booker awards. You've always been so kind to encourage me to share more about what I'm reading on the CBC group so I'm really happy to see you here.

Hello everyone,

I am from the good old Maritimes but I am currently studying in Ontario. When I was completing my undergrad we read The Rebel Angels by Robertson Davies and ever since I have been wanting to read more Canadian authors. Thus, you can guess my happiness when I stumbled across this group!

I read just about any genre, but my go to is mystery/crime when the weather is miserable. I hope to expand my 'read list' with Canadian authors :)

Welcome Isabelle - we are very glad to have you join our group. I am constantly impressed by the book suggestions given by this group and hope you enjoy it!

message 158: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 32 comments This is the fist group I've joined on ŷ! I live in Toronto and have read some Canadian authors, but am always looking for more - especially Indigenous authors. I've read Robertson Davies' The Deptford Trilogy, Margaret Atwood, I'm currently reading Douglas Coupland...and I'm sure I've read others!

I'm excited to participate in discussion here.

Crystal | 1 comments Hi Everyone! My name is Crystal. I live in Saskatchewan, but planning a move with my husband to Ottawa very soon. I used to be an avid bookworm and am still a bibliophile. The past 3 years I spent fast tracking an honours degree in anthropology. This meant that I was unable to spend time reading for leisure, and though I read a lot of fascinating stuff about anthropology and other academic-y things, I got out of the habit of reading for fun. I graduated this spring and have been spending all my spare time reacquainting myself with fiction, literature, and non-fiction of my own choosing.

After not having much time to read for fun for so long I felt overwhelmed and lost - I could hardly remember what I "used to read". I returned to some old favs to reignite the fire, and found myself consuming lots of CanLit. I'm hoping our discussions here will help fuel my fire and zeal :)

message 162: by Mj (new)

Mj Welcome Crystal! Hope you and your hubby enjoy your move to Ottawa and you get your fire and zeal for books re-ignited here like you want. A lot of good discussions take place in this group and I think you'll find a lot of friendly and welcoming members.

Welcome Crystal - I can totally related. I did an MA a few years ago and did not "fun" reading for 2 years. Since then I have more than made up for it and you will find so much enthusiasm for CanLit and reading in general on this site. :)

I write mystery novels that are set in Dunbarton, Ontario which is a fictitious town on the shores of Lake Huron and based on the real life town of Kincardine. I read mostly mysteries. Megan Hello! I'm new to ŷ groups and thought this would be the perfect place to start. I'm in Guelph, ON; currently a stay at home mom of 3 (6,9,12), but applying to Teacher's College (eek!) for September. We just installed our LFL last week and my book club girls are some of my favourite people ever.

message 174: by Megan (new)

Megan Thank you! I've always been a reader, but am recently (as with the LFL) making efforts to make it an even bigger part of my life -embrace it more publicly I guess? Curious and looking forward to what this might bring! :) (Charter # 46299, btw)

I've visited Canada twice, Toronto and Vancouver and have fallen in love with British Columbia. At 61 I've retired from work and now have time to read and travel. My friend and I are back to BC in September 2017, I look forward to reading and learning about Canadian literature, I'm sure it can only add to my love of your country.

Sue Fleming | 4 comments Any ideas where to start or should I just jump on with both feet? I will read almost anything, not a big fan of autobiographies. I like crime fiction, historical or both together but really anything. I suppose it depends on what I can find here, I'll start looking!

Hello and welcome! We've got some threads separated by genre and province that you should have a look at. There's also the weekly spine-cracker thread where we all talk about what we're reading each week.

message 189: by Alina (new)

Alina | 1 comments Hi everyone, Looks like I'm late to the party! I'm living in Toronto, raised in small town Québec. I work for the regulatory body for teachers in Ontario as an administrative assistant while trying to pin point what I really want to do with my life. Looking to have kids soon with the hope of sharing my love for reading and singing with them. I'm into historical fiction or anything that draws me in from the first few lines of a book.

message 190: by Mj (new)

Mj @ Sue, I think you'll find a lot of Canadian authors publish in the UK so you may find it easier to find books than you think.

Just jump in. A good place to check out might be a global site called fantasticfiction.com I use it sometimes to find authors from other countries. If you click on Canada under "countries' you'll see a list of Canadian authors. Check it out to see if there are any names you recognize. The letters beside their names e.g. m for mystery tell you the genres they write.

Enjoy the group and reading our wonderful Canadian authors!! You'll get lots of great recommendations from members.

message 191: by Sue (new)

Sue Fleming | 4 comments Thanks MJ that's a great help, I'll check it out

message 192: by Magdelanye (new)

Magdelanye hey Alina, welcome to the group and no worries about being late because this group is pretty laid back and open 24/7.
we have some challenges that its not too late to join if your so inclined. the Nov challenge is to read a big book ( over 600 pp) or two that we may have been putting off because of its size.
as you explore the folders here I'm sure you will get a feel for what interests you and possibly a heap of recommendations

Jordon Sagel | 1 comments Hello Everyone,

My name is Jordon Sagel and I am from Winnipeg Manitoba. I am the author of "Sin City Meat Locker" and am currently working on two other books. I prefer to write in the horror/psychological thriller genre, as that is what I prefer to read or even watch.

message 197: by Julia (new)

Julia Petry | 3 comments Hi everyone, I hope the group is open to people from outside Canada as well. :) My name is Julia, I'm from Germany and currently also living in Germany. From 2008 to 2009 I've spent a little over a year in Winnipeg, Manitoba where I studied Canadian Literature at the U of M. I also wrote my master's thesis on contemporary CanLit and I'm a member of the German Society for Canadian Studies.
I'm currently working in communications, marketing and project management so I'm not really up to date on Canadian literature any more. So I joined this group to change that and find out about Canadian authors and novels I haven't come across yet and, of course, to meet new people and discuss books and ideas.
It's great to meet you all!
