James Johnson | 1 comments BETA partners needed
Today is the first day of Kwanzaa which means we should be practicing Umoja (Unity)!
I am looking for a critique partner (or beta reader) for a 73-page children’s book. Beta readers offer positive and constructive feedback to writers. After many edits I need a fresh set of eyes from readers who aren’t necessarily familiar with my work and can offer constructive feedback.
For your services, I am willing to exchange a critique (or beta reading) of your book/project or provide you a copy of my published book at 60% of the selling price.
The title of the book is Jamal and Me: Freedom Summer. A work of fiction, broadly and loosely based upon the events of Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964.
Eight-year-old Jamal from Minneapolis is a jellybean counting whiz kid and wins the school jellybean guessing contest. The story is told through the eyes of his ten-year-old brother Jordan. Their Grandma Lynn wished that Jamal would have been around when her Mother was in Mississippi and was never able to vote because she couldn’t guess the number of jellybeans in a jar. Jamal wished he could have lived during that time too to help his Great Grandmother, Ma dear. Well, his dream comes true with the help of a tiny and beautiful butterfly lady, Queen Azina. Azina magically sends Jamal, Jordan and their German shepherd dog Pharaoh back in time to 1964 Mississippi. Join Jamal and Jordan as they visit the Mississippi Delta as Freedom riders.
Taglines: Voter suppression, voter registration, civil rights, voting rights, Freedom Summer, Separate and unequal, democracy.
Jamal and Me excerpt: Once we got out of the cotton field there was a tall and strong looking Black man wearing overalls and no shirt, cutting another man’s hair. There were many Black folks and White folks milling around a large house-like building. A Black woman stood there shuffling her feet, almost like a robot obsessively sweeping the dirt over and over. The man looked and looked at us as if he was trying to recognize who we were.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, tie that dog up. Tie him up. Colored folk don’t take too kindly to German shepherd dogs down here in the Delta. They aren’t friendly to us and we ain’t friendly to them. I think you know what I mean. You two freedom riders? the man asked.

I am looking for Mothers. Fathers, children, teens, Grandparents and singles for feedback. Read along with children and gauge their response. I will provide the questions for your feedback. You will have two weeks to read and respond.

If interested, please contact me via email at [email protected]. This beta reader solicitation will close after the first 5-10 volunteers contact me or January 9th 2021, which ever one comes first.

Maddy (maddykobar) | 2 comments Hi! I'm currently in the middle of writing a first draft of a novel.

Is it okay to post a request for beta readers if my draft isn't ready yet or is it preferable to the group if I wait until I'm done with the draft to post asking for beta readers? (I want to have a few people look over my drafts- I'm thinking I'll be ready in about a month?).

Thank you for your time and consideration. :)

This is my first post. I been writing for myself, but have a fiction novel I'd like to share. Please let me know if anyone would like partt or all of the novel to beta read. Here is a brief synopsis:
City of Second Origin

The City of Second Origin is a novel of literary fiction. Set a century in the future, the story begins with a letter written in 1862 by Walt Whitman to his dear friend and intellectual confidant Charles Darwin. Mr. Whitman prophetically writes of a dark secret uncovered by his friend’s brilliant discoveries; a secret that may determine the fate of humanity.
Two hundred and sixty eighty years after the letter containing Whitman’s prophecy, two young brothers, Jimmy and Preston find themselves in an upended world devastated by climatic and political change. The brothers have been abandoned in a dilapidated trailer home in the desolate Southern California desert with their evangelical grandmother. The two boys struggle to understand the strange world in which they live and the guilt of not knowing why they were abandoned. While escaping a psychologically twisted community of misdirected faith, Jimmy and Preston discover they are extraordinary people carrying the unimaginable burden of ensuring the survival of the human species.
Like salmon returning to their place of birth, the direction of the boys travel is preordained as the brothers trek across an unrecognizable country altered by an inhospitable climate referred to as “The Warming. During their journey the boys gain a unique perspective of humanity’s flaws and perfection.
Their path brings them to the world renown Dr. Paul Marlow. Dr. Marlow has consolidated his achievements and political clout by creating a medical metropolis, The City of Origin. He believes humanity’s salvation lies in manipulating the human genome.
The fate that awaits the boys at the end of their journey is a trial of faith and love between brothers and culminates ultimately in a test of their humanity.

Helen Field | 3 comments Hi there

I am looking for two BETA readers for my second humorous novel - one from UK and one from USA. Male or female. Ideally feedback is required in 2 weeks (9th September).

It is the second book in a series but I also want it to read as a stand alone novel, so I would like someone who has not read the first book.

The story is about a married working class British couple who have both got reasons for keeping their job and side hustle secret from each other, with chaotic and hilarious results. They have hopes and dreams and go to extreme lengths to get what they want and have to cope with many other challenges along the way.

The story pokes fun at the lives of the British working class and upper class as well as the woke movement. (So not for the easily offended in this regard.)

Please let me know if you are interested and I'll arrange for you to get the MS plus a list of specific questions to answer.

Many thanks

That's great news!
Can you possibly send me your e-mail as I have no idea how to attach a MS to this post?
May I ask if you are UK or USA, are you male or female and your age would be helpful for me but not essential if you don't want to give it.
Hope to hear back shortly.
Thx

R.N. Phillips | 1 comments Hi, I've just joined Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and still finding my way around.

Genre: humour/satire.

I'm currently looking for beta readers for The (Not So) Old Testament which is the first of a two-book biblical satire.

Imagine Jesus wasn't born 2000 years ago in Bethlehem but in a social media-driven, modern-day Welsh council estate in a world that has evolved without Christianity.

It is 50k words and contains adult themes and strong language throughout.

Polly Hansen | 4 comments Hi Beta Readers,

I'm an available beta reader looking for beta readers for my completed coming of age memoir that has been through a gazillion drafts and critiques. I need beta reads before my next step, which is querying agents. I post lots of reviews on GoodReads. I've moved away from fantasy and magical realism to memoirs, literary fiction, classics, and historical fiction. I'm a producer of two nationally syndicated radio programs and interview many non-fiction authors and university professors. I'm not naming the programs because I don't want to be inundated with author requests. I'm here because I'm looking for half a dozen or so beta readers for my memoir titled "Nasty Girl." This coming-of-age memoir explores a young girl's obsession with an older man who exploits her naivete with the tacet permission of her parents as she struggles to find self-love and acceptance with the help of a family that takes her in. If interested in doing a beta read of this memoir, I use the New York Book Editors suggested beta readers guidelines. Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you!

Jacob Oakey | 3 comments Hi everyone,

I’m looking for beta readers to provide reviews and/or constructive criticism on my novel. While it encompasses many elements, I’d describe it as a mystery thriller targeted at 18-30-somethings. I want to try and make this as good as I can before I consider publishing it, so any second opinions would be very useful. Message me if you’re interested and I’ll send a sample. If you like it, I can send the full manuscript too.

I’m also happy to return the favour, providing that I feel like I can give some meaningful feedback to you.

Many thanks,

Heather | 13 comments I'm looking for fresh, unbiased eyes for something I'm working on.

/story/show/...

Eileen Moore travels the continental United States looking for ghosts, cryptids, and all manner of paranormal beings.

Instead, she finds a severely injured young man, who doesn't seem to speak English, held captive in the basement of an abandoned building and, without other options, she takes him home to nurse him back to health.

And to find out if he's human or not.

A bit mystery, a bit conspiracy, drenched in folktales.

message 126: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 7 comments Hi all! I'm a writer who is currently polishing up my (first ever) novel draft that is a coming of age story set in a small beach town during the summer before college begins.

Here are some themes in this manuscript...
First crushing heartbreak as the waves crash on the shoreline in a small beach town; betrayals that are as sharp and transparent as a piece of sea glass; friendships that are worth holding into as the ocean breezes permeate the air; coming to terms with a painful past as the tides come in and out; innocence perpetually found in the promise of a coming of age summer.

I would be so unbelievably grateful to find a volunteer beta reader to give this a read. It would mean so much to me as I would love to embark on the publishing process and query agents. Thanks so much. If this happens to appeal to anyone, please reach out to me at [email protected]. Thanks so much.

Steve Cooper | 1 comments I hope this is the right place to post this. If not, please advise.

I am Appaloosa. I ran wild and free until a little two-legged predator captured me from my feral herd and called me Angry Horse.

Angry? Oh... he had NO idea!

... so angry I developed a special set of skills.

... so angry I studied him and his people to learn their ways and speech.

... so angry that I then pranked the CRAP out of them so they’d learn that even their prey is worthy of respect.

My pranks got me kicked out of his village. Some people are now out to kill me. But I won the respect of my captor and a few others, and now they are “my humans.

Then while I’m breaking in a new cowboy, I’m interrupted mid-prank by an owl who claims she had a terrifying vision. She says alien monsters have come to harvest all the humans and sell them as chewy snacks on their home planet. She’s even provided proof that me, my animal comrades, and “the noble Sasquatch are the only ones who can foil this deadly scheme.

At first, I thought the monsters might be a convenient solution to human over-predation. But I’ll fight to keep MY humans... well, OK, and perhaps their loved ones... and maybe some other nice humans I know... Dang it! I guess we’ll have to save the whole annoying species.

Set in Montana, early 1870s, MY COWBOY is a non-magical fantasy/adventure for young adults, now complete at 81,000 words.

And I'd be delighted to Beta the heck out of another author's YA novel of the same general genre and length.

Harley Jay | 1 comments Looking for someone to test read my upcoming novel. It isn't edited yet. The synopsis is below. If you are interest please let me know

Temptation was the product and I was the seller. It was my job to be every woman’s fantasy yet here I was struggling to rid myself of the life I had before. Love came easy for me, ever since I could remember. Being in love had never been the challenge. It was staying in love that was the hard part. I’d give my all and nothing ever seemed to be enough. Well, that was before I entered the palace. Here I was more than a lovesick puppy begging for its next meal. Here, I was a king, a legend that got as much as he gave. Here I sat at the top of the castle accepting offer after offer day in and day out. Love no longer lived here. Nope, that silly little four-letter word has rid itself from my life…at least that’s what I thought until she entered the palace.

message 136: by Ivy (new)

Ivy | 38 comments I recently requested a free beta reader to look at my character sketch/brainstorm and I do not see it. Was it removed? I thought I followed the rules with my post. Below is what I wrote

" I have been at a standstill with my story ideas for years, almost decades. I have a character in my mind that I cannot entirely execute. I have a long list of the main character's personality traits and hobbies. I have received criticism that she is either too perfect, dislikable to be a central character, or does not seem her age.

My story's premise is a young woman with what society perceives as valuable - extroverted, attractive, fun-loving, extremely wealthy, and artistically talented.

Many YA stories focus on the "outsiders," but I wanted to write about someone from the crowd.

Please look at my bullet points and tell me frankly if my character has potential. What do they like or dislike about this character? Please point out any inconsistencies you see within my list. "

Is this inconsistent with the rules for seeking a free beta reader?

Ron Gordon | 3 comments Hello all,

I'm only just discovering the world of beta readers - what an amazing group!

I've been teaching English and Psychology for fourteen years and, after being sandwiched between two life events, poured myself into writing.

I have a complete dark urban fantasy / post-apocalyptic novel titled 'Running the Monster.' Perfect for readers of Speculative / Australian gothic / Magical realism / and Western genres. Has 'Fallout' meets 'Cloudstreet' vibes.

'Running the Monster' reimagines Australia after the collapse of the Virtual world full of militant undead institutions, shambolic mechanical powersuits, and intelligent humanoid cattle-beasts.
In the heart of the chaos rides Viva Wyllie, a young gunslinger, haunted by her reckless youth.

75 000 words - but happy to send out the first 50 pages (double spaced) for your thoughts / impressions (especially re: shifting between timelines)

Content contains:
Violence
A sex scene

Notify me know if you are interested in reading an excerpt or more.

Thank-you for considering my novel for reading.

David Toussaint | 1 comments Hi all,

I'm looking for beta readers for an action-adventure fantasy novel I recently completed. If interested, please message me to request a PDF! Here's the synopsis...

"How synthetic it was to be cautiously drifting, isolated, in the currents that altered the course of Ortem’s clouds. The Talavé were supposed to be beyond the barbarity of the Heavenly Festival Contest! Yet, the production of champions yielded too many benefits to forsake the plaguing event. For Wenir’s ascension, they had to proceed.

Coerced to protect Wenir’s longevity in exchange for his freedom, Donato is sent on an outlandish mission to Kona, a discordant continent below. Kona’s tortuous weather, caustic monsters and hostile culture lead him to face past tribulations. Confronted with uncovering the mysteries of his imprisonment in a kingdom hosting a fantastical race, Donato’s forced to question his identity and purpose."

David Keyworth | 4 comments Hi, everyone! Like some other comments, it's unfortunately unclear to me how I might contact a moderator.

I recently made my first post calling for free beta readings. I may have made the mistake of mentioning the possibility for switching to paid beta readers - since I was aware the length of my work might be above average, and I wanted to know whether that discouraged people from applying (or, if people might be willing to read something longer for free based on the synopsis).

Long story short though, it appears almost all of the responses and direct friend invitations I've gotten have been from professional beta readers that likely saw I had a high word count. I accept fault for mentioning that possibility and have since edited my post, but should those responses be allowed in this section of the forum?
