Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments I've seen a lot of comments of members who are already dreading this category. I found two books on my Kindle that will work nicely here: #GIRLBOSS and Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead (bonus subtitle!), which my boss actually recommended (always good to read what the boss is reading!)

Keep in mind there are a lot of business books that are 100 pages or less.

message 2: by Sara (new)

Sara I have no idea what to read for this, but I thought of The Devil Wears Prada. What better than advice on who not to work for! Ha!

message 3: by Lindi (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) I was dreading this prompt at first glance - but then I remembered I have #GIRLBOSS on my TBR ;)

yes, I am dreading this category. Because I don't WANT "career advice." I have a job I like and I don't want to change it or "stretch" or get promoted or anything like that. I don't want to be a manager. I just want to come to my desk every day, mess with my calculations, answer e-mails, and go home. I know from experience that I could do the best job possible and work long hours and STILL get laid off, so I'm done with all that. I'm not interested in "leaning in." I just want to come to work, and go home, and repeat the next day.

So I'm either going to "cheat" and read a really short commencement address from someone (J.K. Rowling ), or I'm going to find a short kinda-sorta-technical book like Structures: Or Why Things Don't Fall Down (okay, that one is almost 400 pages, so I might keep looking for something shorter. I really don't want to spend a lot of time on this category that I don't even want to read.)

That J.K. Rowling piece is looking REALLY good right now. Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination

How about a Dilbert book? Interpret it as not taking things too seriously and remembering to laugh off the little things.

I thought about that. Scott Adams wrote a book that shows up on "career advice" lists, too. But Scott Adams is kind of a crummy person (exhibit A: he endorsed Trump. Yes, I'm holding that against him. Sure, maybe I'm being petty, but it's important to me...) and ever since he made that clear to the public, I find it hard to laugh at Dilbert. :-(

Ugh. This explains my husband's recent interest in all things Scott Adams. He even bought the book you referenced. We are a house divided. *sigh*

message 14: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments Does it have to be career advice for the job you have? For anyone who doesn't have a job (disability, students, etc.), couldn't you read general career advice or maybe advice about a dream job?

message 15: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I think you can do that, Rachel. It just says career advice... it doesn't get any more specific than that.

message 16: by Rachel (new)

I was thinking of it specifically because I had a couple of books in mind that are for a career that is not quite the same as mine. I work in a day program for young adults with special needs, but the books I had in mind are advice for teachers. I think some aspects can definitely fit.

Ed Lehman | 71 comments Being retired, I'm thinking of interpreting this liberally.... Free for All: Oddballs, Geeks, and Gangstas in the Public Library by Don Borchert since the library is my "workplace" now.

Nadine, what about something like On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft or Becoming a Writer? Instead of reading a book of career advice for your career you could maybe read something with information about writing just for fun? Or maybe that's not fun? :)

I haven't actually read them yet, but I might try one for this category.

Sara wrote: " ... Nadine, what about something like On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft or Becoming a Writer? ..."

That's not a bad idea. Like many readers, I often wonder what it might be like to be a writer. When I was a kid I used to think I could become a writer; now I just find the prospect daunting. But I might enjoy reading about it - Stephen King has got to be worth a read, right?

message 21: by °ʴ° (new)

°ʴ° (amybooksit) | 1 comments Career advice definitely won't help here (disabled and depressed as heck about it) I will have to take Ed's advice and be very very liberal with this one. Hm.

Juliebean (juliebean512) | 145 comments Amy wrote: "Career advice definitely won't help here (disabled and depressed as heck about it) I will have to take Ed's advice and be very very liberal with this one. Hm."

What about something like The Art of Happiness? It says it's a handbook for living - and right now that's your job. I'm not being flippant. I suffer from panic disorder and depression. And those things are like a second job. So maybe something uplifting or just about living well (food or nutrition) could be career advice.

I like some of these suggestions. Feminist Fight Club: An Office Survival Manual for a Sexist Workplace and Power Your Happy: Work Hard, Play Nice & Build Your Dream Life and Mistakes I Made at Work: 25 Influential Women Reflect on What They Got Out of Getting It Wrong all are going on my TBR!

Tara put together a nice list. Feminist Fight Club does sound quite appealing! But my workplace isn't really that sexist (except for that fact that they don't hire women - I'm the only one). I'll give the book a try, maybe.

Thegirlintheafternoon For folks who are struggling with this category, what about something like Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives? There's advice in it that you could apply to a career, but it's not a book of career advice, per se.

message 36: by Therese (new)

Therese | 133 comments I go to bed and wake up thinking about our list of books to read for 2017. I know that is sad, but I can't help myself! I realized that this prompt just says career advice. I don't believe that has to do with YOUR career. It could be about any career even about the career of staying alive and healthy. Okay, that might be stretching it, but

Haha me too! I'm a little sad now that the initial flurry of posting about new categories is dying down! And I agree, this category is just "career advice" - any career, your career, someone else's career, whatever. And there is a lot of overlap with career advice and life advice.

I would say 10% would definitely fit into career advice. Almost everything in it centers around what helped him in his career, and how it could help others. :D

I've been looking at stuff like Why We Work or something like that, which is less career advice and more meta discussion of careers or some such, I think, but it might be worth a shot?

I decifnitely recommend this one! It's funny, and also really deep, and very interesting. I can't read horror, because it scares the pants off me, so I've only read Carrie and Salem's Lot of his work, but the book works quite well without knowing too much about any of his work, and probably even better if you've read hs stuff!

message 41: by Tessara (new)

Tessara Dudley (tessaradudley) | 9 comments Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead actually irritated the daylights out of me. It's a good book for middle class and up white women without disabilities. As an impoverished disabled Black woman, no matter how hard I lean, I won't be able to overcome societal structures that push me out of the workplace. If you aren't in the target group I mentioned above, it's probably best to give this one a pass.

message 43: by Sara (new)

Sara Today's Audible deal of the day is called The Leadership Secrets of Santa Claus: How to Get Big Things Done in YOUR "Workshop" All Year Long. Not really my thing BUT it's 99 cents today and it is only 2 hours and 13 minutes long.

Just a suggestion for anyone who is less than thrilled at this category :)

Megan (mghrt06) | 546 comments I found Listful Thinking: Using Lists to Be More Productive, Successful and Less Stressed. I write to-do lists at work and my personal life like crazy - I even bought a special planner just for lists starting in January. Maybe this will give me insight on how I can organize lists better. I mean, who doesn't want to be less stressed?!
