poshpenny | 1916 comments I might read The Sisters Brothers. I've had my eye on it for a while because I quite like the cover.
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt

I just looked that up and saw it compared to a Coen Brothers film - I'm in!

Or I might read The Madman’s Daughter, as I'd originally planned before I saw that.

Giulia | 44 comments Ivy Compton-Burnett has written many novels with family member terms in the title.

Megan (mghrt06) | 546 comments I didn't have anything on my to-read shelf for this one either! But I searched and I found Aunt Dimity's Death. I might give that one a try.

Searching I just found some more that interest me
Dear Daughter
Not My Daughter
Sisters
The Sisters
Summer Sisters

I love the Aunt Dimity's series!

I like Juanita's list. I was also thinking The Brothers Karamazov. And add to her list Uncle Vanya by Chekhov

Lindi (lindimarie) I didn't think I had anything on my TBR for this until I remembered America's First Daughter. How did I miss it?

I'm really excited for this one, historical fiction is my favorite.

message 8: by VanesGirl (new)

VanesGirl | 92 comments I choose between The Warlord's Wife and America's First Daughter.

I like the cover for Americas Daughter.

Oh I LOVED Daughter of Smoke and Bone! It was my favorite book of the year that I read it (2013). It's a very "Romeo and Juliet" story, except with magic and aliens and alternate planes of existence and genocide and a battle between factions on a distant world ... and they don't kill themselves at the end, so it's got a better ending! I'm a sucker for an angsty love story :-)

Definitely recommend! I really enjoyed this book.

message 17: by Therese (new)

Therese | 133 comments I read the first book of the Clifton Family Chronicles (can't recall the name of it right now) by Jeffrey Archer, and the second one is perfect for this prompt Sins of the Father. Now if they all could fit in as easily, but bit by bit they are. I just have to go through so many books because I do not remember all that I have Over 1600 on my Kindle. I know. I'm sick because I keep adding more. I have an addiction, but I can live with this one. ;-)

message 18: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 35 comments A couple options from my TBR:

The Night Sister - paranormal suspense
The Husband's Secret - contemporary women's fiction
The Ringmaster's Wife - historical/Christian
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister - fairy tale retelling

This is my pick as well.

message 21: by Asia_k (new)

Asia_k | 56 comments I'm finally gonna read Dad, but I would recommend short stories by Tove Jansson, the author of Moomins - Sculptor's Daughter

The Mothers is amazing, definitely recommended!

message 24: by Emma (new)

Emma | 96 comments I will probably go with one of the few Georgette Heyers I've not read Cousin Kate

message 25: by Katie (new)

Katie Turner | 64 comments Think I'll go with Sons and Daughters of Ease and Plenty, it also shows up in NPR's recommendations for best books of 2016

message 26: by Bridgette (last edited Jan 03, 2017 04:13PM) (new)

Bridgette (bridgettem) I'm trying to pick books that I already own for this challenge (as much as possible, at least). Of the 100+ books that I own that I haven't read, only The Memory Keeper's Daughter fits the bill.

Another that comes to mind is The Gravedigger's Daughter. I was only able to get through a few pages of it, but lots of people love this book.

message 27: by Annie (new)

Annie | 12 comments The Son has been on my TBR list for too long!

message 28: by Christophe (new)

Christophe Bonnet A bit of luck: I got Oncle Anghel by Romanian author Panait Istrati at my usual charity bookstore last month, before I read the 2017 list in detail. This will be a perfect fit!

Panait Istrati was in fashion in France at several periods, quite notably during the 70s. I don't think he's very well known in the US; that novel at least doesn't seem to have been translated into English.

I started reading the book yesterday; looks pretty good.

Sara LaRea wrote: "Anyone read Wives and Daughter by Elizabeth Gaskell? I've chosen this one for this topic because it's one I own...and I left my current book at home and had this one in my car. Thoughts?"

I haven't read Wives and Daughters, but I did read North and South last year. Gaskell is pretty easy to read, maybe not quite like Austen, but I enjoyed it.

message 30: by JoAnna (new)

JoAnna | 84 comments Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda is excellent!

message 31: by Pioup (new)

Pioup | 54 comments I'm thinking either Wives and Daughters or The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales.

If you're looking for something short and fun for this one, An Ideal Husband is a winner.

message 32: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinajm) | 80 comments I'm thinking I'll go with Daughters of the dragon.

message 33: by Timbra (last edited Jan 16, 2017 11:15AM) (new)

Timbra The Shoemaker's Wife is an all time favorite of mine. I found it captivating. I was very invested in the characters. I enjoyed the author's rich descriptions.

For the challenge I read The Hidden Gallery (The full title is The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place Book 2: The Hidden Gallery.) This book is the second of a series- the first is The Mysterious Howling.

This series has interesting characters. I was not as captivated by this book as I was the first in the series, but I am still interested enough in where it is going that I have already requested the third in the series from my local library. One of my favorite aspects of these books is the highly quotable advice of Agatha Swanburne. It is charming and zany- I just wish the central plot would move a bit faster. After the cliff hanger ending of the first book, I thought the next book would have hit the ground running.

A couple of my favorite quotes:
"...with the instinctive knack every good governess has for turning something enjoyable into a lesson, and vice versa..." (This one is not a Swanburne quote-it is written in reference to the main character. I think I like it so much because it resounds with me as a mother and teacher.)

"When a big leap is required, a running start makes all the difference-so get moving!"

"To be kept waiting is unfortunate, but to be kept waiting with nothing interesting to read is a tragedy of Greek proportions."

"The more one asks, the more one knows, and the more one knows, the more one asks."

I really like Elizabeth Gaskell - her Gothic Tales is very good. I would put her style somewhere between Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.

For this category: A book with a family member term in the title.
I was considering "children" a family member term. As in, "I have a husband and two children."

Thanks! I was confused! I see now that you spelled that out and I completely missed it, so I wasn't sure what it went with.

message 38: by Timbra (new)

Timbra I added in clarification after your question actually- to avoid further confusion :) Your confusion was totally understandable. Thanks for being willing to ask a question.

Amanda (dgamv) | 25 comments I just started America's First Daughter last night. It's one I owned but hadn't read. I like it so far!

message 40: by Sharmon (new)

Sharmon (tpgirl) | 68 comments I am reading The Paris Wife because I already had it on my stacks,

message 41: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 4 comments I am reading The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain.

message 42: by Pat (new)

Pat Bryan | 61 comments Completed "My Real Children"-Jo Walton.
Interesting,philosophically-follows Trish through both lives of her answer to a proposal of marriage-what was the best choice and its effect on history?

message 43: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (dgamv) | 25 comments I finished America's First Daughter last night. I thought it started pretty slow. I wasn't that interested in her life as a younger girl; however, the rest of it more than made up for it. The closer I got to the end, the more I wanted to keep reading. I've always been really interested in Thomas Jefferson.

message 44: by Kate (new)

Kate | 29 comments I'm going for The Son by Jo Nesbo and The Glass Painter's Daughter by Rachel Hore, they've been sitting on my bookshelf for far too long!

message 45: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 32 comments For those who like Philippa Gregory, I filled this prompt with Three Sisters, Three Queens.

message 47: by Alycia (new)

Alycia (bookhound18) Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett....its apart of the Discworld series but it would be a good starting point for anyone interested in getting into this series!

message 48: by Carla (new)

Carla (carla1957) I am going to read:

The Godforsaken Daughter

Johanna Ellwood (jpellwood) | 236 comments I'm going to read My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry for this prompt. I loved A Man Called Ove so I'm hoping I'll enjoy this one too.

I always end up switching which book belongs in which prompt. I was going to read America's First Daughter for a book about an interesting woman, but it would fit in this prompt too.
