description

Our second read-a-thon will be happening September 17-24. More information can be found in the announcement thread.

The Group Bingo Challenge is designed to be completed as a team. If you have't already, be sure to head on over here to sign up for a team.

The only way to complete this challenge is to work together, so you'll need to communicate with your team. Discussion topics for each team will be posted closer to the event, along with a thread for team assignments. Check in with your team as often as you can to make sure you're all working towards your common goal and to cheer each other on. A little encouragement goes a long way!

Pay attention to the Bingo card. Matching colors can't be overlapped with one another. Black and yellow squares can overlap with any of the other squares.

Side Notes:
- If you're working on the Group Bingo Challenge and the individual challenge, you little go-getter, you CAN overlap your reads between the two cards. The squares are actually designed to overlap in some places. ;)
- You can count audio hours as pages (you would have to calculate your progress in a print book) but you couldn't use audio hours as both audio hours and pages.

THE SQUARES EXPLAINED:
If you're looking for a little more clarification on the challenge, here are the all the Bingo squares broken down.

B1 - Read a new book (not on TBR) - Finish (from beginning to end) a brand new book that was not previously on your TBR.
B2- Read 3 Short Stories or Novellas - Three members of your team will need to read a short story or novella to complete this task.
B3 - Read a book published 10+ years ago - Read a book that was published prior to 2007.
B4 - Read a Book with an Article in the Title - That's any book with "A," "An," or "The," in the title. That shouldn't be too challenging, right? If any member of your group reads a book with an article in the title they can claim this square for your team.
B5 - Read 5 books for the ATY Challenge - Your group needs to have collectively finished reading (from beginning to end) a total of 5 books that count for the ATY Challenge. Each member can only contribute a maximum of 1 book to this total.

I1 - Read Outside for 6 Hours - Summer is coming to a close, guys! Get outside and enjoy that fresh air while you still can. If your team collects 6 hours of quality reading time in the great outdoors you can snag this square. Members can contribute a maximum of 2 hours for their team toward the total.
I2 - Read 3 YA, middle grade, or children's books - Three members of your team will need to read a young adult, middle grade, or children's book to finish this task.
I3 - Read the Rainbow - As your team reads the many books it will read, pay attention to the colors of the cover. You can check this off if your team is able to read a book with a cover that corresponds to each color of the rainbow.
I4 - A character eats - Pay attention to the events in your stories. If one member comes across a character eating then you can cross off this task.
I5 - 5 members read for one straight hour - 5 different team members must read for an uninterrupted hour each to scratch this off your card.

N1 - Read a nonfiction book - Any subject, doesn't matter. Only one member of your group has to read something nonfiction for the team to claim this square. Share a snippet or interesting fact from what you learned with your team!
N2 - Finish 10 Books - Your group needs to have collectively finished reading (from beginning to end) a total of 10 books to claim this square. Each member can only contribute a maximum of 2 books to this total.
N3 - Add 5 books to a map or timeline - Five members will have to read a book and submit it to be added to either the ATY Group Reading Map, Author Map, or Timeline. Since we're only adding ATY Challenge books, this should encourage you to plug away at your challenge list! Squad goals!
N4 - Finish a book or story in one sitting - Sit down and read up! If any member of your team can plow through a whole book (no matter how long or short it is) in a single sitting, they can claim this square for your team.
N5 - A character travels (leaves original location) - Pay attention to the events in your stories. If one member comes across a character who travels to a different location then you can cross off this task.

G1 - Read 4,000 pages - As a group, read 4000 pages total through the week. Speed readers, keep your cool! Each member can only contribute a maximum of 600 pages to your group's total.
G2 - 2+ characters fight - Pay attention to the events in your stories. If one member comes across a a fight (verbal or physical) between at least two characters then you can cross off this task.
G3 - Read a poem - Read a poem. You don't have to read a whole book of poetry... just one poem. That's it. Any member of your team can read a poem to complete this square.
G4 - Complete Every Read-a-Thon Game - This doesn't mean that every member of your team has to do every read-a-thon game. It doesn't even mean that one member of your team has to do every read-a-thon game. It means that between all of you, at least one team member must have participated in and completed each of the read-a-thon games. Although we'd like to think that everyone is playing along, it's possible for one team member to participate in all the games and score this square for their team. It's also possible that each team member only play one game to check this square off. Divide and conquer however you like, readers!
G5 - Read a Book in a Series - Any member of your team can read a book in a series (doesn't have to be the 1st book in the series) to complete this square for the team.

O1 - Every team member recommends a book to the team - You're going to be spending a lot of time together so why not recommend a book to your fellow teammates? If every teammate drops a recommendation, you get this easy square. You do not need to read any of the recommendations for the challenge, this is just a fun little social task. Call it a freebie. ;)
O2 - Strategize with Your Group - Keeping up with your group is vital to your success in this challenge. If your group's discussion topic reaches 175 or more comments, you can claim this square.
O3 - Read 2 Graphic Novels or Manga - Two members of your team will need to read a graphic novel or manga to cross this off your card.
O4 - Listen to 30 hours of audiobook - Your team must come together and listen, collectively, to 30 hours of audiobook goodness. Each member can only contribute a maximum of 6 hours to the overall total.
O5 - Read 2 Books by a Person of Color - Two members of your team will have to read books written by a person of color to check this square off your card.

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I hope I'm not posting this in the wrong spot, but I wanted to clarify the colors/overlapping portion.

The colors are green, black, yellow, and red. We can use one book for a black category and a yellow category. We cannot use one book for 2 red categories. Can we use one book for a yellow category and a green category?

Yes, the yellow squares are sort of the overarching goal for the week since they're the overall number of pages read/hours listened. So all of your reading/listening counts towards the yellow squares.

I can post an example at some point before the read-a-thon starts. I just wanted to get the Bingo card up in case someone decides to join a team or wants to plan their books ahead of time.

Kathryn | 259 comments Another clarifying question--do we need to start and finish each book during the duration of the challenge? I'm in the middle of a few things and am wondering if I can use any of them. As an example, I'm currently listening to a nonfiction audiobook. Am I right to assume that I can use it to fill the listening to audiobook time during the read-a-thon week but not the nonfiction square?

Thank you mods, for all of your hard work--I'm looking forward to this!

For books that were already started, you can count them towards the pages read/hours listed to (G1/O4). You could also count it if you read it outside, if you come across one of the actions (eating, fighting, traveling), or if you add it to the a map/timeline. You could also count it as your "one straight hour". Obviously all that time/pages have been done during the read-a-thon. But it couldn't be used for any of the other squares. I think that could have been more succinct but I hope it helps!

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments Another clarification - reading the rainbow would be ROY B GIV colors, right?
(red, orange, yellow, blue, green, indigo, violet)

Yes, that's correct, Brianna.

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments Hello again... I'm that annoying person with a million questions. lol

I understand we can't have one book count for 2 green squares (i.e. B1 & G5), but can one book count towards more than 1 black square? Say it has a Blue cover (I3), I read it outside (I1), and add it to the AtY map (N3). Would I have to pick just one of those to count it for?

No, the black squares can overlap with any other color and with each other.

ETA: Don't worry about asking questions. The mods are happy to help :)

Taking Brianna's example, then there is not maximum top of overlapping with the black squares? If I have a book where the character eats, travels, fight, it's blue (rainbow), I finish in one sitting and read for one straigh hour, I can count it for all of them , plus one of the different color, B2 - a novella, for example?

Yes, that's correct. We understand that many will read 1-2 complete books so don't want to require too many different ones.

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments Are there any rules about how long a book has to be to count for any of the categories? Would a novella be okay for categories like read a book by a Person of Colour, or could it only count in the novella / short story category? Thank you!

message 17: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I think the novellas/short stories should just fit in the designated categories, with the others being full-length books. I'm not sure where the exact cut-off is page-wise but something like longer than 200 pages?
