Welcome to your team for this week's read-a-thon Group Bingo Challenge. This thread is totally yours, so feel free to take time to learn more about the members of your team, discuss books and activities for the read-a-thon, and to plan your strategy for tackling the challenge.

Your goal is to complete most of the categories on the Bingo card (we'll be super impressed if you get them all!) by working with the members of your team. Some squares are a team effort (with a maximum per member contribution indicated between the brackets), others can be done individually to help push your team closer to their goal. Pay attention to the Bingo card. Matching colors can't be overlapped with one another. Black and yellow squares can overlap with any of the other squares.

We recommend you come together, as a team, and pick some team captains to help do re-caps and keep track of what your team is working on and what progress you've made. Mods will be exempt from this role.

As a team member, it will be your job to check in with your team as you start and complete tasks to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments Hello team!

message 3: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1970 comments Hello!
I'm excited about this week and I'm all about strategy. So I'm reading Winter now and also plan on reading The Time Machine and A Monster Calls this week. The Time Machine will qualify for the book 10+ years ago. After I complete Winter I'm also planning on reading 4 of the short stories that go along with it. I'm sure some characters will be fighting in Winter!

What are you all planning on reading?

message 4: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Hello everyone! I am excited to start tomorrow.

message 5: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I'm not sure what I'm planning on reading yet - coming out of a book slump so kind of just going with the flow. lol I'm excited though! Now that I'm reading again I've been dying to do a read-a-thon.

I'm definitely a planner and am willing to help be a captain if no one else wants to be.

message 6: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I finished the book I was reading at 3am last night to be ready for the read a thon. I am ready to help! I have to think about about where to start. I am not big on poems, graphic novels, or audiobooks though. I am sure I can help out on reading outside, for an hour straight, and I just got notification that a book in a series I read comes out on Tuesday (YAY) and it is not on my TBR yet!

Brianna- if you want to be Captain- I will support you in any way I can.

message 7: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1970 comments Brianna - please be captain! That would be great!

I have some poem books that my Mom was just giving away so I'm sure if no one else wants to I can help on that.

I usually listen to an audiobook of non-fiction but I'm in-between those at the moment and don't what to start.

message 8: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I am not an audiobook person either so that may be our biggest struggle. Maybe some of our other teammates are listeners. I'm a big reader of YA and do read graphic novels so I can definitely help with those categories.

I'll tentatively reserve some spots for tracking things until we hear from the rest of the team.

Kelly - Love That Dog by Sharon Creech

G4 - Complete Every Read-a-Thon Game - This doesn't mean that every member of your team has to do every read-a-thon game. It doesn't even mean that one member of your team has to do every read-a-thon game. It means that between all of you, at least one team member must have participated in and completed each of the read-a-thon games. Although we'd like to think that everyone is playing along, it's possible for one team member to participate in all the games and score this square for their team. It's also possible that each team member only play one game to check this square off. Divide and conquer however you like, readers!

O1 - Every team member recommends a book to the team - You're going to be spending a lot of time together so why not recommend a book to your fellow teammates? If every teammate drops a recommendation, you get this easy square. You do not need to read any of the recommendations for the challenge, this is just a fun little social task. Call it a freebie. ;)
Jennifer - Mutation by Robin Coook
Debra - Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King
Joan - Dark Matter by Blake Crouch or It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover
Ira - The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

Have fun!

Sarah | 539 comments Hi everyone! I have a few books lined up to start reading tomorrow and I think most of them can be put in a few spots so we can use them for what ever slots we need to:

Footnotes from the World's Greatest Bookstores: True Tales and Lost Moments from Book Buyers, Booksellers, and Book Lovers
Lair of Dreams (this one is an audiobook)

Erica | 554 comments Hi everyone!

I can do a short story (currently reading Skeleton Crew), a children's book (I lead a Story Time today, so I'll read a few!), and I can do non-fiction if you like (I have Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex out from the library). I can also try to contribute to audiobook hours but not till Wednesday... Wednesday-Friday afternoons at work I can listen to an audiobook while I lesson plan :)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments Welcome Debra!

message 22: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I am going to start with Never Never by James Patterson . I just got it today, so it is not on my TBR. I don't know if we want to use it for the rainbow, it is hard to decide what color. If not, I am sure it will fill other categories!

message 23: by Ira (new)

Ira | 354 comments Hi. I'm going to try reading A monster calls today. it is a book that was not originally on my tbr. After that I'm planning on reading The call of the wild. It can count towards a book from the aty. If the weather is nice like the predictions said, I'm taking the book with me to the beach, so that could count as outside reading. I can easily contribute with the audiobook part of the bingo.

message 24: by Brianna (last edited Sep 16, 2017 10:14PM) (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments Welcome Ira!

I'll update the main posts when I can as people let me know what books they're working on and what they'll count for. Just let me know when it is actually completed/page count/hour count/etc so I can update our bingo board!

I just finished a book I was currently reading so I can now start a book specifically for the read-a-thon and I'm excited! Now to pick which one... lol

message 25: by Brianna (last edited Sep 16, 2017 11:34PM) (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I decided to start Illuminae which will count for:

 G1 - my 600 pages
 I2 - YA book
 B5 - an AtY book
 I3 - orange cover

message 26: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad The Day Human Prince (Day Human Trilogy #1) by B. Kristin McMichael
has a green cover if we want to use it for the rainbow

message 27: by Samantha (last edited Sep 17, 2017 02:51AM) (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Hi Everyone,

I can definitely add my -O4 (6 hours of audiobook listening). I'm currently working on The Pillars of the Earth but can switch to something else if we can't use books started before the Read-a-thon began.

I'm also going to read Cinder, which can count for the following:
-I3 (Rainbow) Red [or Violet]
-B5 (ATY Book)
-I1 (Read Outside) 2 hrs
-G1 (Pages) 390
-I5 (1 hr Straight)
and either -I2 (YA Book) OR -G5 (Book in Series), whichever we need it to count for

My copy of Cinder also has a bonus short story, "Glitches" so that can count for
-B2 (Short Story)

And when I finish that, I'll move on to The Hound of the Baskervilles, which can count for:
-I3 (Rainbow) Blue [or Violet]
-G1 (Pages) 236 (rounding out my 600 pages)
-N2 (Finish a Book)
and either -B3 (10+ years old) OR -B4 (Article in Title), whichever we need it to count for

message 28: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) Hi team!

I can read a book in a series and do audiobook time. If the rain ever stops I might be able to do outside reading. Also, if I can find a graphic novel at my library i will do one of those.

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) Ok I finishef A Quest of Heroes: The Graphic Novel (Episode 1) for a grapgic novel.

Also i will recommend Mutation

message 31: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad my book recommendation is Mr. Mercedes
this is a long boo but really good and they made a mini series from it

message 32: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad I have read for one hour straight also

message 33: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1970 comments I recommend Dark Matter or It Ends with Us. Those were my surprise reads this year. I've also had a lot of fun with the Lunar Chronicles this year.

message 34: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad I my book The Game Begins three of the characters are eating also the main charcater moves from austin tx to oxnard california

message 35: by Ira (new)

Ira | 354 comments My recomendation is The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
It was very original and I'm sure not for all, but it is worth a try.

I have finished reading A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. My edition has 215 pages. It can count towards a book originally not on my tbr, as I found it in the library and picked it up on a whim.

I have also listened to 4 hours of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain.

I have also read outside for 30 minutes.

message 36: by Brianna (last edited Sep 17, 2017 01:19PM) (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I was able to read for an hour straight and that was hard! I never realized how ADD I was when it came to reading. I would read for about 15 minutes and want to play on my phone. I didn't, but it wasn't easy! lol I'm enjoying Illuminae more this time around though!

My recommendation is Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch. It's a cutesy (but not too cutesy as a theme is coping with grief & loss) young adult romance set in Italy. It was such an easy read and really helped pull me out of my reading slump. If you need something nice and fluffy, then this is for you!

message 37: by Brianna (last edited Sep 17, 2017 09:29PM) (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I came up with an update post to track things each day. It'll be for what categories/books we finish and those categories that are kind of ongoing. If something isn't correct, or you want me to include different/more/less information, let me know! (I'm also keeping track in my private group of all the books that are in progress and what categories they may apply to so I do have that documented as well if desired.)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments Side note - if we've started a book before the read-a-thon begun, it won't count towards all categories. We can count them towards our reading goals - like pages, audiobook hours, reading outside, etc. but not like 'read a nonfiction' or 'read the rainbow'. (according to the rules discussion & postings in other groups)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) Oh and I have finished 1 hr 16 min of an audiobook so far.

message 42: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I recommend Pandemic by A. G. Riddle. It is on the line of apocalyptic fiction, really fast paced, and has lots of action.

So far in my book the main character Harriet Blue has physically fought two people and has taken a trip which required an airplane and rental car to get to her destination. So we can use Never Never for one of those since it won't be in the rainbow and we won't have overlap.

message 43: by Joan (last edited Sep 17, 2017 04:11PM) (new)

Joan Barnett | 1970 comments Ok so here is my contribution today - I probably won't be as successful the rest of the week.

I read The Time Machine in one sitting. I was saving this one for a read-a-thon since it was so short.

Here is what it can count for (I also read it outside for over 2 hours)
B3 published 10+ years ago
B5 counts towards my ATY challenge
N4 Read in one sitting
I3 Cover is blue
I1 Read outside for over 2 hours
I4 (they ate a bunch of fruit)
G1 read 118 pages so far

I'll update again tonight my time :)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Hi everyone,

Didn't get much reading done today, but tomorrow will be much better for me.

In the meantime, my book recommendation is The Eyre Affair or any of the books in the series. If you like British humor, alternate reality timelines, and boat-loads of Literary references, you'll love this series by Jasper Fforde.

message 46: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I got everything updated in the posts above. We've knocked a few categories as well! Yay!

Jennifer - Did you want to count the pages from the graphic novel towards G1 (read 4,000 pages - 600/member) or towards N2 (finish 10 books - 2/member)?

Erica - Did you want to count the pages from your short story towards G1 (read 4,000 pages - 600/member) or towards N2 (finish 10 books - 2/member)?

I've heard so many good things about this book. I've had it on my wishlist for the library and it's almost always available for check out. I seriously need to read it already!

message 48: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Put me down for reading for a straight hour! It was actually longer than that, which means I am going to have a groggy Monday morning. Oh well, it was worth it.

message 49: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad I have 2 hours of audible done today

message 50: by Erica (new)

Erica | 554 comments Hi, almost bed time for me.

So far I have read:
170 pages (including the short story)
I'm about halfway through Bonk already and it is fascinating, so that is my recommendation (but beware if medical procedures or sex make you uncomfortable).

And I read a ton of children's books. Maybe count The Animal Boogie.
