message 1: by Sara (new)

Sara This one is a little more open than 2017's book being made into a movie THAT year. Can't wait to see some great suggestions!

message 3: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sterling | 153 comments My list includes:

Room by Emma Donoghue
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding (and all the other Bridget Jones's movies/books)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger
Holes by Louis Sachar

There are more than that, probably, but I figured I would stop for now. I do plan on reading some of these books this year, but there are some of them that I don't ever plan on reading.

message 4: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 355 comments I actually went to see a movie yesterday and thought (again) that I should read the book. I guess I wasn't the only one with the same idea because the movie has been running for over a month and all the books were all loaned out from the library. But before that I should probably read the previous books about the same person, eventhough they are not really a series but his earlier experiences do play a role, and it was a good thing I was aware of them before seeing the movie.

message 6: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Kiefer | 118 comments I had to dig back into childhood for this one, because I'm so uptight about seeing the book before the movie. But along the way I found a few movies I'd seen where I didn't know there was a book.

The Birds - No idea why I watched this as a little kid, but I didn't know then there was a short story, so this will be my pick.

Nothing Lasts Forever (Die Hard)
Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence (Mean Girls)
Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory (Pitch Perfect)

message 7: by Megan (new)

Megan (mghrt06) | 546 comments Maybe I'll finally read The Hobbit

message 8: by Jo (new)

Jo (allweatherreader) | 50 comments I'm going to finally read It o_O

message 9: by Kenya (new)

Kenya Starflight | 965 comments Going REALLY obscure and reading "Felidae" by Akif Pirincci, if I can find an English copy. I would not recommend looking up the movie... something I found out the hard way...

message 10: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments This was one I suggested and I'm excited! So many options!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I've just bought a lot of Dr Strange comics as Amazon has a deal on. It's either one of those or the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them screenplay

I have been meaning to read that one for a long time, because cats...

message 13: by Christine (new)

Christine H | 496 comments Might be a good opportunity to check Ghost in the Shell off my TBR list - I saw the anime movie long ago.

message 15: by Dani (new)

Dani Weyand | 372 comments Fannie wrote: "Here are my shortlist for now:

I Am Legend
The Help
The Virgin Suicides
Castle in the Air"

Howl’s was made into a movie but I don’t think Castle in the Air as been adapted!

message 17: by Ashly (new)

Ashly (ashlyh) Matilda
The Maze Runner
Stephen King books (the ones that were made into movies)
Horns - book really good. movie was ok. Will re-read this.

message 18: by Julianne (new)

Julianne (missjulianne) | 7 comments Double Indemnity
Mildred Pierce
Eat, Pray, Love
Something Borrowed

message 19: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 131 comments I might finally get around to reading Vanity Fair. I remember not caring for the film when it came out, and that's kept me from picking up the book for far too long--usually classic doorstoppers are my bread and butter! (This is exactly why I try to read books first).

Other ideas:
What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal
Venus in Furs
Miss Julie
Fingersmith (basis for Korean film The Handmaiden)

Apparently I'm in the mood for some bad ladies :)

message 21: by Fannie (new)

Fannie D'Ascola | 438 comments You are right Dani. I guess I just wanted an excuse to read it.

message 22: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments I think maybe The Hobbit or another kid book. Peter Pan or Mary Poppins, perhaps. We’ve been watching Midnight, Texas as well (I don’t really care to distinguish between movies/TV.)

message 23: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 464 comments I'll probably do The Last Unicorn.

message 24: by Dani (new)

Dani Weyand | 372 comments Fannie wrote: "You are right Dani. I guess I just wanted an excuse to read it."

If you haven’t read howl’s moving castle yet, it’s the book that comes before castle in the air. And then you could do castle in the air as the second book in a series you’ve started. Me and my daughter read all three books this year, they’re so lovely! But just an FYI castle in the air is in no way related to the ghibli movie castle in the sky.

Thanks Dani, I thought they were related at first.

I read Howl's moving castle last year and really loved it.

message 26: by Megan (new)

Megan | 360 comments For me, I like to read the book before I see the movie! lol
It took me a while to realize I've seen The Princess Bride, but never read the book! So that's what I'll be doing.

message 27: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (kristy67) | 53 comments I rented The Circle to watch this week. I’ve been meaning to read the book. Hooray!!

message 28: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) I usually prefer to read before watching, but since I saw The Martian before I realized it was a book first, I think that will be my choice.

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) | 896 comments I'm finally going to read North and South. Technically it's a mini-series, not a movie, but I so often read books before they're made into movies if I have any interest in reading them at all, and I've really been wanting to buckle down and read this one, so I'm counting it.

Tonya (bookasaurustonya) | 80 comments The Bourne Identity trilogy? series? Idk how many there are. I didn't realize they were books when I first watched the movies. I read The Bourne Identity a few years ago and loved it. I also saw this book on the list for set in the 80's. I don't remember it being in the 80s but then again I barely remember what I did yesterday lol. Either way I highly recommend it.

message 33: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 355 comments Tonya wrote: "I also saw this book on the list for set in the 80's."

I'd say it's set in the 1970's. It looks like it was published in February 1980, and I don't think the author had set it in the future.

message 34: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 25 comments Gone With the Wind is my favorite movie, but I’ve never read the book, so I think I’ll kick off 2018 with this challenging challenge!

message 35: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Jerris | 42 comments I LOVED The movie and didn't know that it was a book!! Reading PS I love you!!

message 36: by Christina (new)

Christina (cvilla44) The Jane Austen Book Club
The Joy Luck Club

Enjoy both movies, decisions!

message 37: by Brandyn (new)

Brandyn (brandy_k) | 82 comments This is going to be a tough one for me because generally if I’m interested in a movie based on a book I make myself read the book first. Doesn’t always happen so there are lots of movies I haven’t seen. I’ve looked through a lot of lists and so far my options are:

The Silver Linings Playbook
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
Eat, Pray, Love
Hidden Figures: The Untold True Story of Four African-American Women Who Helped Launch Our Nation into Space

Could probably count
Emma (I’ve seen Clueless)
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (BBC TV Series)

message 38: by Christy (new)

Christy | 358 comments Oh my goodness, if you have not yet seen/read it, I cannot recommend The Thin Man highly enough. Nick and Nora are such a delightful couple that going through a mystery with them twice is a pleasure, not a burden. Make yourself a martini (or seven) and watch it today!

message 39: by Miriam (new)

Miriam | 154 comments I'm going to read Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, have seen the movie, and am really looking forward to the book!

message 40: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 464 comments Stina wrote: "I'll probably do The Last Unicorn."

Or maybe Under the Tuscan Sun or Bridget Jones's Diary. I know I have both of those books already.

message 41: by Lindi (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) I thought this might be a little harder since I like to read the book before I see the movie. But I had some options on my TBR already.

Think I'm going with The Phantom of the Opera, since it's one of my favorite movies.

message 42: by Trina (new)

Trina Gloury (mactrin) | 76 comments So many to choose from... The mind boggles. I'm going to go with The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks. I really loved the film and want to tick off reading all of his novels.

message 43: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (catherinemcslade) | 22 comments I think I'm going to read The Gunslinger for this one

message 44: by Tytti (last edited Nov 12, 2017 08:36AM) (new)

Tytti | 355 comments If you have a hard time coming up with a book you haven't read but have seen the movie, there's Heart of Darkness. I assume more people have seen the movie "Apocalypse Now".

message 45: by Siham (new)

Siham (dornesque) | 3 comments I will probably be reading Rosalie Ham's The Dressmaker for this prompt. I have liked the movie adaptation very much (thanks in particular to Kate Winslet's and Judy Davis' performances) and its "weirdness" makes me very curious about the novel itself.

message 46: by Fannie (new)

Fannie D'Ascola | 438 comments Good call Titty, it's one of my favorite movies.

message 47: by Wednesday (new)

Wednesday | 42 comments I am going with Jaws, which I've never read, and will not be reading right before bed. I'm learning my lesson with my 830 page HP Lovecraft book for this year's challenge.

message 48: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer T. (jent998) | 230 comments I love movies and books so this is a fun category for me. Before I read this thread I was thinking of The Lincoln Lawyer and Blood Work by Michael Connelly and Absolute Power by David Baldacci. But now I'm also adding The Exorcist, The Green Mile, and Rosemary's Baby as possibles. If I watch The Snowman with Michael Fassbender I might use it for this category AND the Nordic Noir category. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

message 49: by Sharmon (new)

Sharmon (tpgirl) | 68 comments I will probably choose from
The Help
Atonement
Emma

I have been wanting to read all of these and I have already seen all of these as movies.
