Yes! For the regular hands, we can. So that should be completed either way pending the completion of color cards! I just figured I’d wait till the end of the month and just add them in if we need to but if we read enough to fill it without them, I’d rather have all of us on the spreadsheet instead :)

We can’t use them for the mini challenge though :-/

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments Apologies I have been away most of the month. March has been even more insane that February. I will pop my books on the spreadsheet and hopefully you can use them for the mini challenge

No worries! I have added most of your books to the spreadsheet since I knew you were busy (though if you've finished any in the last day or so I may not have added those yet) -- but if you can go through and add card possibilities I missed, that'd be great! I was just going off the GR page for each so I don't always get all the possibilities :) Thank you!!

It is! I just only had a certain amount of time yesterday I could spend on documenting everything so I just did as much as I could. I didn't add the mini challenge fits for this one or the Harry August one, but they both qualify. In the next day or two, I'll hopefully be able to figure out their fits as well

No worries! I just wanted to check. I think some of them don't actually count for the mini because you started them before March 14 (Every Day, Shatter Me, Harry August).

The only one I'm not sure of is Astrophysics. You have a start date as the beginning of the month, but no updates on it progress-wise till March 18 (and I know you marked a bunch of yours as currently reading at the beginning of the month so we could see what you planned for the month). Do you remember if you actually started that one before or after March 14?

If you're not sure, that's fine I wouldn't remember, so I don't expect you to! Just let me know!

Also, just an FYI to everyone I am going to try to knock out the 4 in the mini challenge so we can finish that word in the crossword as well!

Sarah | 87 comments Yay! Also I should have one more completion tomorrow :) Hopefully it helps!

message 364: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Hi all! Just another update -- aside from the 1 Red (which I believe Catie is working on) and the last Wild Draw 4 (which I believe Avni is working on), we have finished the March hands! Whoo!

As far as the mini challenge goes -- I am working on the 4 and have another book I'll finish here shortly that will work for a C, so aside from those, the letters we have left are:
A - 4
C - 1
M - 1
R - 1
U - 1

But, like I said, I can always move things around. We have several books placed as a letter that can qualify for another letter, so we have some flexibility. The only one we don't have that flexibility on is U -- we currently only have two books that qualify with U, and both are placed as U in the sheet. (There are 3 total Us in the mini)

You all have really kicked it up the last half of the month and are doing so great! Let's finish out March strong :)

Also, speaking of next month -- I am going to read The Hundredth Queen (The Hundredth Queen, #1) by Emily R. King for one of our red cards. It looks like it'll fit for any of our red cards (1, 2, or 9) so I'll just place it on whatever ends up unclaimed.

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Avni wrote: "So I have a question..... At the end of the challenge maximum points achievable will be same for all teams right?"

Unfortunately, no :-/ The hands are all chosen by a randomizing tool, so it really is the "luck of the draw," so to speak -- some teams are luckier than others and have a higher maximum allowed points each month (which is how they take the lead). The mods just do what the randomizing tool chooses and don't change them to even them out.

That being said, the randomizing tool has definitely not been kind to us during this challenge!

But that is where the mini challenges are so important, because they can really make a difference! This year, the teams have just all been doing so great in general! But I think there will probably be some teams who do not complete the mini challenge in March, so that should play to our advantage :)

message 376: by Avni (new)

Avni (avniaghi) | 162 comments But isn't that unfair though? Because then even if we complete all our hands and the mini challenge we have no chance of actually winning UNO

message 377: by Amanda A (last edited Mar 30, 2018 11:22AM) (new)

Amanda A | 290 comments It would probably require a ton of work for the mods to even out the hands for all teams. Almost all of the UNO teams I have been on completed everything but never won. I enjoy playing the game anyway! (I came in as a backup player during round 1 and I don't think we completed everything that round.)

message 378: by Amanda A (last edited Mar 30, 2018 11:21AM) (new)

Amanda A | 290 comments I have finished five books recently and I have a few more to go through tomorrow to finish off other challenges. I think they cover each of the remaining letters in the mini challenge but I will wait until tomorrow to post and just fill in whatever is left.

message 379: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Thank you Amanda!

And yes Avni, not technically fair, but that’s just another aspect of UNO. But I think being able to complete everything is accomplishment enough, no matter what the ranks say :)

I’ve loved so much being on this team and appreciate all of you more than you know!! Last year was my first year doing UNO, and my team did TERRIBLE. Finished dead last with like half the points of every other team. It was for a variety of reasons the team I was on didn’t read as much as this one does, our captain (I was just a participant last year) didn’t update the spreadsheets before the cutoffs, etc. but being able to captain this team who is doing so well and completing hands and mini challenges has been amazing to me!! And I think if at the end we can say the cards didn’t work in our favor, but we earned every single point we could.... that is still a victory to me!

So please don’t let the points system discourage you :)

Catie Currie | 133 comments I'll be posting another book tomorrow (hopefully I'll finish it in time, fingers crossed) that has a ton of characters so it should definitely work, but I was wondering about the 4. Any ideas for that? I don't even know what's allowed to count for that one

message 382: by Catie (new)

Catie Currie | 133 comments And I agree with Kaley, if we finish everything and do the best we can, that's definitely a victory, we do anything more than that!

message 383: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments I’m on it with the 4! It has to have a four in the title so I’m doing a booker called Booked 4 a Murder.

You are working on the 1 Red, yes?

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments Kaley, my read Warcross has a character named Asher i it so it will work for the last A in 1 Across. I only have view access to the main uno spreadsheet so unable to add but details are in our planning spreadsheet

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 311 comments I may get one more book done before the end of March but it is by no means certain unfortunately. If I do, it should work for one of the 2 down letters

message 386: by Kaley (last edited Mar 31, 2018 05:20AM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Thank you Nikk! I have added it.

And ok, last day of March update: we only need the 1 Red (which i believe Catie is working on—right Catie?) for the regular hands, and for the mini, aside from the 4 I’m finishing up tonight, we have one each of the following left:
C
R
A

I believe Amanda said she’s finished books in the last few days that can cover all of these, so Amanda please let me know whenever you get a chance! (Side note: I think you said you were reading one that would fit a U I put Catie’s there for now, but hers also fits C, R or A, so I can swap out for any of those if needed)

Thanks everyone!

Ok! We have about 11 hours left to finish to be able to count it for March! (Countdown to end of March) Do you think you will have it done by then, or do you want me to try to finish something for it just in case as a back up? Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments FYI -- I have finished The Hundredth Queen (The Hundredth Queen, #1) by Emily R. King . I have currently placed it as 9 Red, since that's the first red to come up in our hands, but it can fit either of our other red cards (1 & 2) so there is some flexibility there.

Sometime in the next few days I will start The Last Equation of Isaac Severy by Nova Jacobs , which can fit either 0 Blue or 9 Blue. I'm guessing it may be able to fit for our 5 Blue too, but I'll have to read it more to know. (The titular character is named Isaac, but he is also dead at the beginning of the book -- I'm checking with mods to see if, since his death is basically the catalyst of the book and the plot is about solving a puzzle he left behind, he is considered important enough even without living dialogue to be allowed to use)

So that is another one that will be able to be flexible in placement.
