Does the natural disaster happen in the story? Like, is it described or does any of the characters witness it happening? I think it needs to be present.

Paulina (polly1) It’s a tough one. It’s a parenting book, so there is no story. Each chapter is on a different matter. In one of them, in order to address a problem of reasoning your parenting methods in a manner of metaphor, they present a legendary land of Good and Reason. And it’s being presented through the chapter along with the storms and flood I mentioned. It goes like this:

Not far from the Rationals was the village of the poor Howtos. They had their methods, but knew little of why. Once, these lovely people shared a common ancestry with the Rationals. But suddenly struck by a devastating storm called Need, the Howtos became isolated from the Land of Good Reason. Many of their sages and elders were swept away in a flood of information, leaving the Howtos isolated from the ways of the Rationals. Lost forever in the storm of Need, the wisdom of old became buried in the sludge of doubt and fear. The storm washed in new seeds of old habits. Soon a forest of habits grew so thick and dense that seldom did the Howtos see the light of day, and seldom did they dare venture beyond their clustered village. No beautiful parrots ventured over to this land, as the canopy of habits was uninviting and the light of day too weak. Instead of thinking for themselves they fell into the habit of letting the council think for them.

I would say yes.

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments I have trouble fitting my last book to what's left now.
Half the World (Shattered Sea, #2) by Joe Abercrombie This one might work for tall object, waiting for captains group to decide. It can also work for 4 and 8, 17, 26 or 38.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter #7) by J.K. Rowling Hopefully it can work for breakable object.

I have one last book that I've started and would like to put to use. It works for 17, 22, 28 and maybe natural disaster if giant mutated worms appearing can be counted as such.

But these are mostly taken, and will probably only be available if stuff is shifted around in some way.

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments Wow. A lot has happened since I was last on.

I finished The Total Package by Stephanie Evanovich for the WD4.
The female mc works as a sports journalist on tv for most of the book and in the end starts writing a book. Do you think that is enough for 39. where the MC is a writer?

I have one that will work for 14. where the author is named Charlie, or Charles

I didn't read the part that says 'starts writing a book', so I think this definitely works for that task. Adding it now.

message 467: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 915 comments Answers for the queries!

1 - task 56 is meant to say first OR last name

2 - the ship doesn't count as a tall object on the cover, and the mountains in the background aren't objects so that's out

3 - the natural disaster needs to actually take place in the book so I'm guessing that one's out too.

message 468: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments So here is what I'm going to try and finish

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House Humor, Blunders, and Other Oddities from the Presidential Campaign Trail by Charles Osgood by Charles Osgood - 14. where the author is named Charlie, or Charles

The Physics of Star Wars The Science Behind a Galaxy Far, Far Away by Patrick Johnson by Patrick Johnson - 35. written by an author with the initials P & J

Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer might work for 64. where a natural disaster occurs but I'm not sure yet.

I'm going to finish Dragon's Love (Red Planet Dragons of Tajss, #3) by Miranda Martin which so far isn't working for any of the ones we have left but could be used as one of the 4 if we finish the 70. The same goes for The Friend Zone (Game On, #2) by Kristen Callihan

I was thinking for 37. where "Haiku" can be found in the title or text, that it could be the letters in the word for the title but looking at it now it seems to be the actual word. So one I thought could work will not.

I'm looking for one for 45. set in space

Dawn | 303 comments Sorry I can't edit my original completion post but the book I just read for 56. The main character is a alien hunter and there is a section where they travel through space to a different planet. Can this also count by set in space?

Also the main Authors initials are J and P. Number 35 is for initials P and J , does it matter which way round ?

How much of the plot takes place in space, would you say? If it's the majority, then yes this works.

Someone asked in the captain's chat and you can have the initials either way round.

I don't understand. In post 464 and on the spreadsheet it still seems like this isn't covered.

Also check post 454 where 2 of my books can be swapped to cover the task with book on cover.

Paulina (polly1) Have any of the books we have had more than 500 pages? If so, I believe that The Name of the Rose could work for 61 twisted or convoluted plot. It is a kind of detective story so it has many twists and turns.

I don't think I have any that were over 500. I looked at one but the you posted yours so I decided to skip it.

Ingeborg read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but I don't know if she started it before the 12th

message 481: by Ingeborg (new)

And I am listening to the audiobook of Mandela's Way Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage by Richard Stengel which will work for 63. with a character or author name of Richard, Rick, or Ricky, so I will be done before the night is over.

We are at about 8 hours left

message 484: by Lulu (new)

We are so close. If only we had one more day, I am sure we would have finished the 70. There are about 5 and a half hours left but it is late where I am so I am calling it a night.

Just wanted to say it was fun reading with all of you :)

message 485: by Ingeborg (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments I did the 500 pages book! Can we use it?

message 486: by Paulina (new)

Paulina (polly1) I hope we can! Let’s just use my The Name of the Rose for twisted plot.
Girls, I’m so impressed. You must have read for the whole night :) You really inspired me and motivated to read even more!!

message 487: by Ingeborg (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments Completion Post.

Task 29. Book with 500 or more pages. Book is 603 pages.

If we switch name of the rose to convoluted, we can use this one.

message 488: by Ingeborg (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments It's been a lot of fun! I woke up at seven and finished the last 100 or so pages of this book. Would have done it yesterday, but we had visitors over, so I didn't get the chance. You have all been awesome teammates! :)

message 489: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 915 comments Working on updating the spreadsheet now, the captains have 12 hours from the end of the challenge to update it, so if anyone's finished a book before the end of the challenge (which was 10am UK time) but hasn't posted it here, please post as soon as you can.

message 490: by Ashleigh (new)

message 496: by Lulu (new)

Right now it looks like we are in 12th place

And you asked about other challenges before. Idk if you are a memeber of the Nothing But Reading Challenges Group but they are doing Tower Teams VI which you might like. I joined a team last year as a replacement and it was fun
