Karen | 161 comments Ooh, I ate that trilogy up. I hadn’t heard about a fourth book. I’ll keep my eyes open. Thanks for the heads up.

I read this recently and I'd say no. Kell uses it as a landmark for when he visits Grey London, no part of the story actually takes place within the Abbey (that I remember)

Sophie Trist | 7 comments I just finished Red Sister by Mark Lawrence. after being sentenced to death for attacking a nobleman, the main character is taken to a convent where girls are trained in magic, combat, and religion. AMAZING fantasy with great characters, plot, and world-building. Some of the tropes are a bit Harry Potter-ish, but that's not a bad thing in my book. Getting to read the sequel—can't recommend highly enough.

Alissa (alissa_in_wonderland) | 1 comments The Beautiful Mystery takes place in a Monastery. It's number 8 in the series, which is wonderful!

I just finished the second book in the series and was hoping Dark Triumph would work for this prompted. The first book fits, but this book doesn't work for prompt 50. The story takes place out of the abbey and cloister where the first book was set more in the abbey. I'm going to have to see if I can fit it somewhere else and find a different book to go here.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1752 comments I got a bit excited that I'd ticked this one off by accident when The House of Shattered Wings mentioned someone going off into one of the cloister rooms. It's set in Notre Dame but I couldn't see that the cathedral had traditional cloisters in the real world. They had an area next to the cathedral called Cloître (cloister) but I can't find a reference to them being used as cloisters?

I'm probably going to find something more relevant but I'm just interested if there are any Notre Dame experts that knows if Cloître Notre-Dame ever housed monks?

Yay! The Smell of Other People's Houses has been on my TBR list for a long time.

Irene (reenie_bean) | 6 comments I am not sure if has been mentioned, but I think The Gargoyle would work here. It jumps around a little, but a large chunk of the book is in a convent. The whole book has religion references. It is, in my opinion, a fabulous book that was thoroughly well researched. It also checks the box of debut novel as well (I think!)

message 163: by Angela (new)

Angela (skiesclear) Those still looking for a YA option that is also a fantasy series, you can check out The Demon Awakens by R.A. Salvatore, as many main characters are monks and much of the book takes place in a monastery.

✨ A ✨ (az_youread) ive finally found a YA book that I'm interested in and that (from the description) fits this prompt (I think since its not published yet) The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh.

Not an expert, (and I'm assuming we're talking about Notre Dame de Paris) but as far as I can tell there was never a monastery or convent associated with the cathedral. The Cloisters that were once nearby (burned down in the 1600s) were an early part (possibly the original home?) of the University of Paris when it was a theology school for training clergy. The book might be referencing that? That school moved way before the cloisters burned down though, and became the Sorbonne in honor of the bishop who gave them the money for a new building. I think. Yay french history, never confusing at all...

I had this book in mind as well. It takes places all around the Vatican and Rome. I'm planning on rereading, maybe doing the audiobook this time around.

message 168: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (rachel_rieve) | 10 comments I'm not sure what I'll read since I've already read the below and don't want to reread, but I'll recommend:
Angelology by Danielle Trussoni - the beginning involves a nun in a convent in New York state, and there are also visits of the Cloisters in NYC and some churches
The Book of Boy by Catherine Gilbert Murdock - a Medieval middle grade novel, about a boy who joins a pilgrim to gather relics of Saint Peter (most of which are in churches or monasteries)
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers - about a convent in which girls are trained as assassins

to hit amateur sleuth/read a book in the season in which it's set/book that makes you nostalgic. Great series, and won't take nearly as long as The Pillars of the Earth.

Any of the series would. The Virgin in the Ice is season specific too.

Danii Allen (whisperedwishes) Does anyone know of any queer/LGBTQ+ books to fit this category? I'm trying to fill all the prompts with queer fiction, but not sure where to even start looking for this one. I've read a couple of books which include religious "queer re-education" camps (like The Miseducation of Cameron Post), but I'm not sure whether that counts or not since it's not technically one of the options listed. Any ideas appreciated!

I'm going to try Vixen by Rosie Garland for this prompt but I don't yet know if it's going to qualify. The blurb talks about a vicarage so fingers crossed! I'm pretty sure it has some queerness in it. I know the author is bi.

It doesn't sound like it based on the description. Sounds like the "priestdaddy" just had some kind of religious conversion, but isn't actually a priest and doesn't live in a church or monastery.

message 191: by Ian (new)

Ian (iansreads) Well her dad becomes a priest and she moves in with her parents. I just don't know how much of the story takes place within his parrish.

Jackie | 723 comments Heather wrote: "Does The Hunchback of Notre Dame count for this one?"

Not especially...Quasimodo does live in the cathedral, so I guess? But it's not really the same as like a monastery or something of that sort. And of course, a lot of the book isn't necessarily set inside the cathedral, and still less in the part where Quasimodo lives up with the bells. It's a stretch, but it's not that far off either.

I would not count a Catholic school as an abbey, cloister, monastery, vicarage, or convent. Unless the school is also a convent?

message 198: by Deepika (new)

Deepika | 7 comments I’m actually not sure, since it’s a private catholic school. If it’s coed would it make that not a convent? I have no knowledge of such things 🙂

message 199: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 9602 comments Mod
It's probably not a convent :-)

BUT it's your Challenge and you can stretch the prompt as you see fit. If reading a book set at a Catholic school feels like it fits, then for you and your Challenge, it fits.
