Bonnie (bonbayel) I was aiming at 75 -- but I read 114!

* 59 in English
* 12 Catalan
* 6 Danish
* 5 German
* 18 Greek
* 4 Spanish
* 3 French
* 7 Italian

I read books in Spanish, Greek, Catalan, Italian, German, Danish and French as well as English. In the first three I managed to graduate to adult books at some point during the year--I already have don that with the last three. Italian stayed with learner's Easy Readers.
That way I improved my foreign language skills and kept up with English, Danish, French and German literature. I expected that the English would be about 40%, the Danish 20%, and the remaining 40% divided among the others, but it ended up way fewer Danish books, and loads of Greek, including the last one, a 350 page crime novel. I read the first four Harry Potter books in Catalan and Spanish! It's interesting for me that Danish, Greek and Catalan are spoken by relatively few people. I love learning languages (and recently started Japanese, although I doubt I will ever be adding a Japanese book to my GoodReads reading lists!

Last year I tried for 100, and ended up putting in some YA and even Middle School books I was reading for my Little Free Library. That left a bunch of really hefty books on the table and in my kindle.
As you can see, I like to read books in foreign languages, some of which (Greeek, Catalan, Italian, in particular) are still a challenge for me with lots of word look-ups, and some with exercises. I hope to get to "real" books in some of those languages sometime during the year, like I did with Spanish last year. But that's slow going.
As a retiree I have lots more time than when I was teaching, but I think this year I won't go crazy trying to make it. Last year I was finishing book 100 last night (New Year's Eve!)

I started learning the new languages using , which I mostly use on my phone. I've also used other programs like RosettaStone. But after getting through DuoLingo, I found that I needed to read, and that there are a lot of Easy Readers if you know where to look for them. Many also have audio available, which is great! And now I've discovered , where you can find native speakers as either paid teachers (I pay my Greek teacher) or conversation partners with half an hour one language and half and hour another. With one we share her Catalan with my Danish.

Bonnie (bonbayel) The original list was so long, so I've moved these to a separate comment.

Learning Catalan was just for curiosity while visiting Barcelona. I knew it was sort of like Spanish, but not at all, so I wanted to see how it worked. I did Catalan through Spanish on DuoLingo and found some italki tutors. I also bought a few VEUS Easy Readers and a Dictionary in Barcelona, and have now completed the entire set, as well as 3 Harry Potter books and a couple of "real" novels, which are quite old, with old-fashioned language. I have to find something new for the new year!
