Swimming Pancake | 60 comments Okay so I'm terrified of libraries and is really weird.
1.I'm scared of librarians well I'm terrified of speaking to strangers an in my opinion the scariest people out there I hate people putting me on the spot and I find librarians do that the most along with shop keepers, sorry if you are a librarian or shop keeper.
2.Crippled books also make me feel really uncomfortable just I'm terrified of ruined books that's why I don't let other people borrow books.

Comment down bellow with all your opinions and strange fears.

Swimming Pancake | 60 comments I know I'm really weird I just am I don't even know why I'm so scared of libraries I can't go in them especially the one at my school I hate it because I have to go there for lessons

message 5: by Cindy (new)

Cindy I work at a library and I can tell you that a lot of us are introverts and are probably more scared of you then you are of them. But then people tell me that about spiders and it doesn't work.

message 6: by Linda (new)

Linda Kelly Clowns, definately clowns (shudders in horror). If one was wandering around giving away hundreds of free books I would run a mile. And flying...would never get on a plane even if it was a flying bookshop with free books for all passengers! Get panic attacks just driving past Gatwick airport.

Danielle (daniellecobbaertbe) | 374 comments I'm also terrified of clowns and spiders. Sorry clowns and spiders. Although some weeks ago I asked a spider to please go away and it did. It was actually more scared of me.

I also easily get anixious when put on the spot and I absolutely hate job interviews. What helps for me is rehearsing lines and interviews beforehand. And the idea that there is nothing wrong with me. I'm just me.

I suppose everyone is weird.

I'm scared of the street artists who dress up and stand very still then move if you put money in the pot for them. Freaks me out, I always give them a really wide berth!

message 9: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Shuker (kathyshuker) | 34 comments I'm scared of filling in forms. It's ridiculous - I'm literate; I understand all the words. But when I see a form my brain seems to go to mush. I struggle to even put my name in the right place. How sad is that? (See, you're not that weird after all Swimming! Or maybe we all are... :))

Cat,

I agree. Any normal person experiences fear from time to time. The difference is, some choose to stand-up to and overcome it, while others choose to succumb and slink away from it.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Jim, yes there's few better feelings than when you've faced your own personal fear and, while maybe not having overcome it, survived at least! Think we all have own strange and personal fears that might not bother other people at all.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3572 comments Apart from dentists (see Grumpy Thread) I really can't do balloons! Whether blown up or in a bag hanging in a shop! And if a shop has balloons by the door - forget it - I don't go near it.

When the Col and I went to a very posh 'do' at Woolwich Officer Mess to learn how to be a captain and wife of, (yes, we had to have lessons!) we had a huge dinner night, long dress, sexy mess kit, the works. Well we had to go and look at the table during one of the 'lessons' and see where we were going to be sitting and there on my chair was tied a balloon! Col had to go to mess manager and ask him to remove it for me!

We left the dinning room with the staff working out where to arrange the balloons so they weren't near my place setting, but getting past the balloons when they were moved was still a nightmare!!

Jim Vuksic Too many associate fear with cowardice. Being afraid does not make one a coward.

During my military service (many, many years ago), the officers and NCO's constantly reminded us that fear was natural and a useful tool to get a person's adrenaline flowing when most needed.

It was also stressed that someone who performs a difficult task, even though it may be utteryly terrifying for them, is brave in the true sense of the word. One who fears nothing is psychotic and should be feared.

I bought my daughter a spider catcher off Amazon last Christmas, Helen. Are you familiar with this scared-stiff-of-spiders aid? When you see council workers walking around town picking stuff up off the floor with a long stick thing - that's what the spider catcher looks like. Long stick, brushes at one end that open up and close around it, then release the handle and dump it outside, unharmed. I'm not scared of spiders so I don't need it. The old glass and card trick is all I need - capture under glass, slide card beneath glass routine. But for those who think that heading for it with a glass is getting too close, then the spider catcher is the answer.

Jim, I'm not scared of anything, but I'm definitely not a psycho. I have a mild fear of planes and wasps, but not enough to stop me going anywhere or sitting in the garden. I occasionally take the opportunity for a little light exercise if a wasp takes a fancy to me and decides to chase me.

There's one thing that goes through me and can make my skin crawl just thinking about it - wrinkly fingers from over-exposure to water. If I've been in a swimming pool or bath too long, even touching my own fingers makes me shiver. Hate that.

Tori,

While reading your post, I formed a distinct mental picture of you with tongue firmly inserted in cheek while admitting to having a mild fear of flying and wasps immediately after stating that you were scared of nothing. Being a little afraid is like being a little pregnant.

Regarding spiders: When my youngest daughter was much, much younger than her current 35 years, she had a terrible fear of spiders. Hoping to cure this phobia, one day I picked up a spider and held it in my hand while explaining to my daughter that all living things serve a useful purpose.

As it turned out, the spider apparently bit me and I must be allergic to some mild venoms, because I awoke the following morning in severe pain, my hand and arm were extremely swollen, and a red streak was visible in my shoulder.

The emergency room doctor said that I could have died within a day or two without the intensive anti-biotic treatment that was begun.

My youngest daughter is more terrified of spiders than ever and I now leave treatment of phobias to the professionals.

Linda Kelly Aaah Jim that is so scary, sad yet funny at the same time. Actually, maybe I mean ironic rather than funny as there is nothing funny about what you went through!

Linda,

You and I may agree that the situation was not funny; however, my four adult children and my grandchildren still laugh hysterically whenever the story resurfaces.

Helen | 4217 comments And again I read my case that they are dangerous. Mum always tells me I'm silly, then told me a story about a man on her local news who nearly lost his leg after being bitten.

Tori, I couldn't use one of those in case it ran down the handle. I'm bad enough with the Hoover.

Hahahaha! Sorry Jim, but that is hilarious. It definitely is a case for never picking spiders up. I feel very safe with my glass and card technique. I don't like killing things, with the exception of flies.

When I was young, we had a family friend. My mum used to conduct a choir and this guy was her organist. He was a single guy and we used to love it when he came to our house because he had money and always had a fast car or two and would take us for a spin. Anyway, he was a proper show-off and an animal lover (not that the two go together of course). Long story short, at one point, he had a fox and he also owned at least one tarantula. I remember him bringing it to our house in a large match box and my baby sister holding it. She couldn't have been more than about six. I still remember him telling her to keep very still and not make any sudden movements. Looking back, he probably should have been locked up. Lol! I was never tempted to hold it, needless to say.

Helen, you've got it bad. I thought the spider catcher was the perfect stocking filler for you this year.

Jim, I stand by my 'I'm scared of nothing' statement. Mild apprehension about a plane crashing while I'm on it is not the same thing as fear. By any stretch of the imagination, planes are pretty scary. Awesome, but scary. I've been on one three times this year alone, so I rest my case. My fear of wasps has diminished and diluted with age. Definitely. My worst encounter was about 6 years ago. I was the organist at a wedding of a friend of mine. She'd also asked me to 'do something musical' while she signed the register. I played the 18th variation of Rachmaninov's theme on Paganini and my son wrote parts for a string quartet (he plays violin as well as piano) and I played with them. It was scary enough having to play a difficult piece without there being a huge wasp buzzing around me while I did it. Not fun. I was proud of myself for soldiering on, note perfect, so I'm awarding myself with an apt book link.

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway

Glad you recovered ok Jim!! I had a similar reaction to a bite on my leg over the summer, but I didn't see the perpetrator - I felt something bite me when out in the garden and a day later the bite became really swollen and red and a red trail was moving from it up my leg so I went and got it treated straight away. A course of antibiotics did the trick so I presume it was an infection rather than a reaction to the bite, though I had to take antihistamines for quite a while to get it to settle down and I was rather apprehensive when I finished the antibiotics if it had completely gone or not. I still have a mark there now!

Wasn't a very good insect year for me as I also got stung by a wasp and a bumblebee! I'm not really scared of either, but around them I am now slightly more 'agitated', shall we say.

Anyone particularly afraid of both spiders and wasps would do well not to look up the Wasp Spider on google! I've seen them here in southern England and they are beautiful but really not one for those with phobias!
