And if someone wants to try to make it, here (How to Make Brigadeiro) is a post with a video in English teaching how to make two versions.

I am not looking at the recipe, I am not, no, no.... Not me... (Ok, I'm sure i will)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Thank you for Brigadeiro recipe Juliana. It looks and sounds delicious!

When I think about it, I can not say which is The One sweet that represents Serbia. We love food so we make everything from different countries: baklava, crepes, waffles, cakes, Profiterole, ...
But I decided to go with Slatko (literal translation of name to English would be Sweet). It's a type of fruit preserve and it's a custom to greet/serve visitors with a bowl of slatko and a glass of water. Slatko can be made from any kind of fruit, but some of the most popular choices are: strawberries, figs, cherries, blueberries, quince, ...

Esther (nyctale) Quebec is Maple kingdom so i would go with maple products for sweets here.

I wanted to visit Wales when we lived in England a few years ago but we never made it. The exchange rate was too high for our little struggling family to afford much travel then. Boo hoo! My maiden name is Welsh -- Davis. I hear it's about as common there as Smith or Jones are here in the states. Ever since I discovered my name's origins, I've wanted to visit Wales.

Dragana -- I've heard of Serbia, and not just because of the mobsters, haha.

All the food looks good! Making me very hungry... Might have to look at recipes for them.

British sweets... Difficult to choose one. I'd say the things I miss when I've been abroad have been cadbury's milk chocolate and apple crumbles.

Muffin - don't feel too bad. I don't live far from Wales and I've been once for a day trip. Keep meaning to go back to explore more. Planning a weekend in February to see Pembrokeshire (if I ever get round to booking anything!)

message 109: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 127 comments I've got to agree with Sophie about the sweets, apple crumble and Cadbury's are delicious and quite British.

Yes, it's an extremely popular name, about 80% of surnames in my school are Davies, Jones, Williams and Roberts.

message 110: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 5067 comments treacle tarts! :) haven't had them in ages! very British :)

I work with McNeil / Johnson & Johnson as a Validation Quality Engineer and it is a crunch situation so 80-Hours a week has become a norm !

What I hate in this is that I dont enough time to read. Hopefully I will be able to manage my work and reading better in the coming weeks and I can be an active participant in this challenge. (I so so want to)

80 hours is crazy. I'm a Software Engineer at Rockwell Automation but luckily we're on the development side so we don't often go over 40 hours.

haha! Sophie..I don't work 80 hour weeks...lol I only work around 40....but my schedule is not normal...i am a vet tech...I work 6-7 days a week...mostly short days...but I have 1 or 2 10 hour days...on my feet!

message 121: by Apoorv (new)

Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 1242 comments Its 4 am and I am still at work.. I started at 7 am yesterday and have atleast 6 more hours to go. I will be hitting around 30 hours straight today. :P

Catherine, 10 hours standing is indeed tough. I have been standing for the past 4 hours and my legs have left my company.

Kelly, Rockwell Automation is a reputed company, seems like an interesting job profile. Hope you are enjoying your work.

so what is a Validation Engineer?

message 125: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Wow you two have some tough jobs. I can not imagine standing so much. I used to work as software engineer and I remember when sometimes there is a problem in application we had to work 10-12 hours a day and I complained how I was stiff from all that sitting (in a comfy leather office chair). I think I will not complain anymore. And my usual work day was 8 hours.

But now I am on maternity leave so my work day is you can say 24 hours. LOL

If I have some little break I'll pass by. :)

message 127: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 5067 comments I am not simply standing for my job....I have to lift animals onto the exam tables, and retrain them. Sometimes witb the larger ones..we restrain them on the floor....but have you everhad to restrain a 150-180lb dog...that doesn't want to be held down? lol.

Catherine - you have a lot of sympathy from me on that! My parents have a large german shepherd and I can't imagine trying to get him to do anything he doesn't want to.

Juliana - hope you have a great weekend with your brother.

Apoorv - go to sleep!! Working that long in one go is never healthy!

Trying to find inspiration for easy to cook, Halloween themed food for a party tomorrow... Not getting very far at the moment.

Heh. We have a Newfoundland who's 135 lbs and lifting her into the car is always fun. Luckily out vet has a table that moves up and down for the big dogs.

My friend made zombie meat for halloween one year which was just pulled pork with green food coloring bbq sauce. It was really gross looking but tasted fine.

message 131: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 127 comments Sophie, how about pumpkin pie or pumpkin tartlets?

I'm in Hay-on-Wye this weekend, a little place in mid Wales with 42 bookshops. It means I might be a little bankrupt by Sunday, but at least I'll have loads of books to read for when the challenge starts :)

message 132: by Apoorv (new)

Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 1242 comments Catherine wrote: "so what is a Validation Engineer? "

As a validation Engineer is a Pharmaceutical Company, which currently is under the scanner of the FDA, my job is to validate / test cleaning methods for the equipment we use for the manufacturing of the Drugs / Medicines that J&J makes. We are currently making Pepcid Complete Berry Tablets and each time a new batch is made of this (or other drugs), we have to design a better and fullproof method to clean these huge equipment which formulate all these drugs. Chemical concentration, time of cleaning specificity to the second, contamination concerns and many other such factors need to considered so that there accurate about of required drug in the medicines produced. (A milligram here and there and people can literally die, coz we are talking toxic drugs here). So, we have to be very careful with all that we do. This part is called Cleaning Validation, which is my forte.

So that cleaning encompasses all the standing around for long hours. Moreover, we need to document each Protocol, make lengthy reports justifying each comma we put and each second we took to better the process. So, things are under the scanner currently for literally everything you do or put to paper, thus the seriousness of the whole situation.

But its a fun job.. mighty interesting to see how the drugs that we lift of the counters in stores are made from scratch, and cool to be a part of it. :)

Geez ! For some reason I am scared of dogs and you have to be around ones who are tough to tame seems so damn hard. I would love to see though how all the examining is done.

But isnt it fun being around animals ? :)

Apoorv thanks for the indepth description! Good to know how much thought and effort goes into making medicines.

Add me to the list of people jealous about hay-on-wye. Would come home with an awful lot of books and our shelves are already overflowing so prob just as well I'm not there.

Have ended up making a chicken and butternut stew, with roast vegetables and gingerbread men/zombies/ghost for after. In the odd calm before people arrive now.

The discussion for the first BOM has already started.
The Lies of Locke Lamora seems to be a instigate fantasy.

I wasn't planning to joint it but on my trip to library I found that this book was available and couldn't resist to bring it with me. :)

If anyone join a BOM discussion don't forget to let me know.

Sorry, no points for joining in the discussions if you don't re-read it. We're only going off books finished after the start date so be careful if you're participating in a BOM/BR going on right now if you want it to count.

It's always great to join in the discussion just for fun though :)

Quite a few BOM's end up with buddy reads for their sequels. I'd ask after this BOM wraps up and I bet you'll have people interested.
